So, convince me to buy a Diamondback.

Just buy a DBS, hes pretty cheap and you won't lose any noticable amount of money should you not like him and sell it again. People can tell you many things but trying always works best.

Well, got my new toy shipped across to a high-tech world, bolted a bunch of B & C rated stuff to it (along with some biggish guns) and took it out for a test-drive.

I dunno if this will make any sense but it feels like I would have thought the Vulture should feel.
The Vulture is a small ship but it is, basically, a small platform for a couple of honking great guns so you'd expect it to feel solid but a bit heavy and lethargic - and that's exactly how the DBX feels.

I've done a handful of trade missions in the DBX and stopped-off at a handy RES, just for some yucks, and it seems very reliable.
Ideally (as an exploration ship), I suppose it could have used a couple more class 1/2 slots, instead of one of the class 3 slots, for a variety of scanners but that's about the only fault I can find with it.

Considering they're supposed to be for completely different purposes, it feels like it could do the same job as a Vulture. It's just a bit less fussy and a bit more flexible.
Very nice overall. [up]

Good advice for the gunship thing others brought up. DBS works well for this, too. Just not as sturdy.

Buy One! Or I kill this Kitten!

I keep a 38ly DBS called "Bubble Hopper" in the hanger as a taxi. Say I want my Python and Anaconda at a CG, I take one over, ship in my DBS for 50k or so and don't waste millions on moving big ships around. Fun ship to zip around in! It is only equipped with a fuel scoop and a wake scanner.

Say g'day.

Actually courtesy of a community goal that we blew the doors off of. You're welcome :)

Edit: actually, looking at the old thread (that CG has some good memories for me) it looks like AEDC was actually behind the CG. Thank you very much :)

Bit of am update...

I've found an ideal role for the DBX as a ship for investigating "Tip Offs".

I really, really, don't like wasting time fuel-scooping so I always try to use the smallest possible ship, fitted with the biggest possible fuel-scoop, so just steering around a star to get to the next jump point is enough to refuel my ships completely.

I did some "trials" by upgrading and engineering a Cobra 3, a Viper 4 and the DBX in similar ways (dual SRV Bay, cargo space & fuel-scoop and then engineer the FSD, thrusters, hull & shields) and the DBX came out on top (IMO, at least).
All 3 ships can be fitted out in similar ways.
In the end, the Viper 4 falls down due to it's poor jump range and the Cobra has good speed but it isn't as well protected and the jump range isn't terrific.
The DBX has superb jump range, has the best armour and shields and the large fuel-tank means you can travel further without stopping to fuel-scoop or worrying about not finding a suitable star to scoop.

Definitely going to be my go-to ship for those times when you need to make a ~300Ly dash across the bubble, deploy an SRV to find something and then, possibly, get into (and/or run away from) a fight. [up]

And now, in 2.3, this ship gets a buff.

Its getting an extra class internal compartment, and its hull mass is reduced, making it jump much further than before. For 2.3, it will become the go-to exploration ship, capable of 60Ly jumps engineered.

I personally have not long acquired a DBX and absolutely love this ship.

Was poking around with the one I have in storage last night in beta, without me doing anything it's up to 52ly range and after a bit of engineering liteweight mods dry tank range is 56, a really cut down version could go further I think especially with a Godlike roll on the FSD (mine is ok but nothing to write home about).

It's the cheap Anaconda for sure for newer players.

I use a DBX for exploration, can see using anything else. i have yet not to get out of an interdiction.
Just leaves the gankers behind. As far as the hard points go, mine are all empty, dont need them to explore.

Cant see spending the creds on a Asp-X when the DBE does such a great job.

I have a mining ship and exploration ship. Never looked at the DBS, might check into it as a fighter. Since I dont have one.

I love my DBX - when I'm over here <--- and I want to be over there ---> because at 45 Ly per jump, I can get over there really fast, then ship whatever ship I really want to use to me, while I fly around and gather materials while I wait.

I do that as well.

I currently have both... I really like the DBX for a surface mission runner. The Scout will likely take over my blackbox type scoop and run missions. I was using a Viper III for that but the better hard point hard point locations, utility slots and visibility of the DBS mean it will win out for those duties.

I have both engineered with DD5 thrusters and Long Range Level 5 FSD drives and they are really fun to fly. I had an Asp not long ago but I hate the drift on them...

DBX = excellent explorer for the utilitarian now that it has enough internals to cope, with the unique benefit of being almost impossible to overheat.

DBS = lovely unique small fighter. Would be wary at first because if something is going to go wrong it's probably your canopy being shot out, but otherwise it's deadly agile with a very generous speed and the heat profile to handle thermally intense weapons naturally better than any other ship.

How fast does the DBS go with DD5?

I like the look of both ships but that useless window pane under the UI bugs me. You can't see through it from the inside because of the angle, and you give the enemy a clear shot at your nuts for no reason.

As others have stated once engineered the scout is a fun/fairly lethal ship... mine has an ok jump range too. It really only has one use to me considering my other ships...I derp around in RES with it.

The scout has a 388 max/ 527 boost in her current configuration with a 32 Ly jump range in her current configuration. The explorer has a 328 max/ 429 boost with 39 ly jump range.

FYI... The lower side windows are useful with VR, head tracking or the Tobii eyeX eye tracking like I use.

Yep. What once was a barely flown ship will now be used by many an explorer. The DBX has finally been fixed, it is at long last useful for the role it was designed to do!

Maybe THIS will help to convince you to buy and fly a shiny brand new and improved Diamondback Explorer!!!!
