New to Elite and wanted to share the video that got me to buy the game!

Well, if your experience is like mine, Open is just about as empty as Solo.
Personally I went to Sothis and Ceos in a Sidewinder and have been going all over the outer rim in a good number of ships ever since. Then just this month I came to tau-2 Gruis A. Currently I'm around Gende and LHS 20 if you want to try to find me :]

Btw: don't flock to the Community Goals in an expensive ship unless you have a large wallet.

Welcome! If that video inspires you, then Elite Dangerous is definitely for you!

The best tip I can give is something that I think you've already grasped:
Immerse yourself into the game instead of trying to beat the game. :)

Never fly what you cannot afford to rebuy.
This is probably the most important piece of advice you need to know in this game; and that goes well beyond your first 20 hours (or so) of learning how to fly.

You need to be very careful in Open!!! Total chaos...like Mos Eisley Spaceport, scum and villainy.
Well yes, but more seriously; you're better off learning the game in Solo or in a Private Group. You can always get hot and heavy in Open later on.

My advice:

If you're enjoying what you're doing and having fun then keep doing it. Otherwise try something else.

It's a big galaxy! o7!

Don't mind about the complaints of the game is dead or dying. Most people here have played hundreds or thousands of hours and will always be back for seasons 3,4,5,...10

Elite is the most beautiful space sim I have ever played. The graphics are unbelievable. The flight model is a 9.5 out of 10. I've been playing for 2.5 years.

That being said, there are times when you want to snatch the monitor off the desk and pitch out the window. There is a grind. There is monotony. There are times when it leaves scars on your psyche.

But I still come back. I can play for 45 minutes a day. Or 6 hours. Or even just log in to check the mission board. Or I can let it drop for weeks.

I equate it to golf. Players hate the game, they break clubs, swear, have tantrums on the green. They to the caddy, the club manager, they throw their clubs into the trunk and swear to never return.. But then, they hit that perfect swing, the arc of the ball is like a rainbow, that ALMOST hole in one.... and they keep coming back. Elite is like that, you'll swear it off, but then you find a 5k per ton trade route, or you get the perfect spawn in a HazRES and run up a 15 million credit score in 45 minutes, or you find a stunning sunrise on a tiny planet 34,000 LYs from earth.

Best advice is enjoy the game and take your time. There are any number of 'exploits' or 'get rich quick' schemes out there- leave them alone. There will always be exploits somewhere in the game.
By taking time and building up at a 'natural' pace the game is so much more rewarding, each new ship an adventure. It really is the best way to do it

Welcome CMDR,

I see you've been well taken care of. I can understand why you got the game after watching the video, I was tempted to get it again myself after just seeing it! :D

Fly safe and have fun!

Welcome aboard Commander! o7
You'll probably want to stick to your starter Sidewinder for a while. Don't upgrade it or buy another ship until you feel comfortable flying it and have a nice amount of credits. You WILL die, but you get a free replacement Sidey.
When you do upgrade, the FSD and Powerplant are the first things to do IMHO. I'm biased (see sig) but I suggest that you then get a fuel scoop and go exploring. D-rated modules are the lightest, which will improve your jump range (except the FSD: always A-rate that ASAP), Look at the pretty shinies, then sell your data for loadsamoney.

Don't fly what you can't rebuy.
Scan everything.
Try new things.
Make a profit.
Don't die.
But above all, have fun!

I can't really add to the advice you've already been given, but I thought I'd pop in and say thank you for giving me an excuse to watch it again. That ending... :O

Welcome to the big black. o7

My daughter got a birthday message in her email, "Wow! This company is really nice and they really care!" she said to me, "They sent me a birthday email letter!"

"It`s just a standard computerised email they send to everyone, it doesn`t actually mean anything. You`re real friends are your real world friends and family", I said. And no, I didn`t just nod and say, "Yes," so she grows up getting a completely weird view of life, especially social media nonsense designed to drain kids (and parents) of cash.

I`ll do the same with you: That`s a nice video, but it really is just a nice video. Now the game is good, don`t get me wrong, but please don`t expect you`re going to get anything like that in one session. That`s more like a Trailer for a movie with everything good shoved in. You`ll just get upset and frustrated. Patience is the key.

And that bobble head in the video- You`ll have to BUY that as an extra.

So I was browsing youtube and I came across this video:
---
And I instantly was awed enough to buy the game the next day after a little research. I'm a little confused by the controls but I'm doing the tutorials a lot and having fun. I kind of wanted to say hi to this community and maybe show more people this video.

That's Crusina and I love watching her videos. She made another one earlier:

Watch her canopy closely; there's cracks in them. She took chances but I respect a commander that has the brass ones to continue on (I'd be heading home to fix).

Even though I've seen them before, I always enjoy watching them over and over.

haha I've done that a lot. Died three times trying to get out of the station and then realized i never pulled up my landing gear
There are a set of training missions in the game, along with a training video for each one (also available on YouTube, here's the playlist). It's extremely helpful to give each mission a try before jumping into the "real" game. They're also a great place to practice flying around.
