General / Off-Topic That's it! I'm off to play NMS!

Lol I just spent god knows how long doing "something" in NMS.

I still have no clue how to:
Get a better gun
Earn decent money
Get a better ship
Upgrade my suit.
Build a base that does something
Kill more than 2 sentinels without dying.
Use the map
Discover flying animals (they're out of range before the scan completes!)
Build a buggy

And i also have no flippin' clue what the game is actually about. What is atlas? And why do i need to go there?
My starting planet was so lush, that everything i find now seems barren and dull. Lol

And people say ED is difficult. Lol

I've already died more times in NMS than ED. Lol
I've been playing NMS for 5 hours. And apart from a random base in a place i didn't want, i still have the exact same ship, exosuit and gun... Lol
And just 120,000 credits, or whatever they're called.

If anyone finds my "base" (which is just a collection of corridors and circular rooms), i left a fitting message...

"I have no idea what I'm doing..."

Don't ask where it is though, because i don't know. :p

Play in NORMAL mode for starters, and then go here for tips and other info:

https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/

Most of us here who play NMS started with it on launch and thus have done all those things over the last 9 months... I imagine it might seem overwhelming having all the new updates already there from day one.

The game is really fun if you take your time and don't try to do everything at once. Pick one thing and see it through, then move on to the next goal.

I had explored over 700 systems before the Foundation update dropped, so I had several excellent home planet candidates already logged.

Take your time and explore for while would be my advice to a new player.

On the odd time Virgin media have an issue in my area I phone them. I stay on the phone complaining (A skill I have got much better at since coming here everyday! ;)) until the issue is resolved. Strange how quickly problems go away when the grumpy old git won't! :D

My internet is just plain annoying. Lol
It plays up, drops out, goes slow, until i ring Sky.
Then it works perfectly.
As soon as I Hang up. Off it goes again. Lol

As mini review of NMS.
First (5 hours) impressions...

meh...lol
It's ok, but it feels incredibly slow paced. I assume once i get better equipment, it'll speed up a bit.
But as of right now, release day of The Engineers was more fun. Lol

For survival games, I much prefer 7 Days To Die. That too is a bit slow to start, but once you're up and running, it's loads of fun.
And then becomes too easy. Lol

I was... Lol

I might need to read some guides. NMS makes very little sense. No wonder everyone hated it. Lol

I suppose ED is similar though. But i find ED very logical, mostly. :p

The Atlas Path is pretty straight forward as long as you click on that RED ORB that is sitting near the crashed ship at the opening of a new game save. I found it relatively easy to progress myself. I never felt any sense of not knowing what I needed to do next. The game puts up little hints in the lower right corner of the screen trying to direct you.

But it is very open ended in design. But I wouldn't put in anywhere close to ED's learning curve. Took me months to get ED all figured out. NMS? About a week. (But that was back in August)

I've got well over 300 hours into NMS on PS4 and achieved the Platinum Trophy which is one of only three I have ever gotten on that system. It is not a game for everyone, but it is definitely one of my favorite games at the moment. And it keeps getting better with every content update. :)

Hah!

I'm playing ED and NMS at the same time! lol! :)

While I am waiting for my next 50t of "FREE" Aisling Duval propaganda material every 29 minutes for Power Play, I jump over to my PS4 PRO to continue working on my NMS base, and crafting Lubricant commodities for $$.

Works out quite nicely when both games have me in money grind/wait for respawns mode. ;)

I definitely like the fact that NMS is 100% playable offline. I wish ED provided the same option.

Explosives can also be quite lucrative as well. I have a full biodome dedicated to producing materials for Explosives, as well as a large garden area for Lubricants.

Yep, been playing NMS while doing a bit less of Elite waiting for 2.3 to drop and another few weeks after for the bugs to settle. :)

Probably should also dig Rebel Galaxy out, never finished that one, and there's ALWAYS time to play rocket car soccer. Not to mention Rimworld, where the game just decided to wipe out half my colony with plague.

My internet has cut off again. Lol

Curse you Sky. Curse you. -_-

It's a shame it takes 15 minutes to load it.. lol

It's improving too, I'd almost recommend it, but only on sale. :p

Now, if i could only figure out what the heck I'm doing... :D

I simply dont play Elite. Im on the one on the left of this photo atm.

The last few months have seen me reaquainted with X3, Oolite and Euro truck sim 2 of all things (and of course, silent hunter 3)

I thought all you secret government agent types had super duper satelite phone connections and unlimited high speed access:(

You'd be surprised how many countries do this. When we used to play arma games with an israeli group (who were awesome) they sometimes couldnt get on due to government throttling.

My Spectrum ISP is solid and cannot remember the last time it dropped. When it did long ago before Spectrum bought out the previous company I would play the ED training missions as they are local on the PC with no server required. Still down I'd fire up X-Plane 10 and fly my Gulfstream G650 out to the West Coast for California cuisine and a light Chardonnay at Spago's in Beverly Hills! :)

The ship? Or one of the two people on that island thing to the far left? :p

I used to play X3, and Arma.
Both great games. Arma 3 just dropped a 4.9gb update, which may be why my internet suicided itself. Lol
I want to get back in to Arma, but last time i played on a dodgy connection, i was piloting a Chinook full of soliders....

... I was told I'm no longer allowed to fly until my internet is fixed. Lol

I will never complain about my IPS again after reading these tales of woe.

I don't have fiber but cable @70 which is good, 300 is available but I'm not paying for that!

Ah, the joys of a stable 200Mb/s connection.

When I looked at moving to Tucson AZ for a UAV job, the house I had picked to buy (as I intended to relocate out there for good) was situated in a part of the city where the only available options for internet were via some type of direct beam from centers within the city itself to dishes mounted on the roof of the house, dialup or DSL. I was so upset by those options that I looked into, priced and was ready to pay to have the cable needed run to my house so that I could have a stable cable internet connection.

TR: I switch over to single player games that don't require the internet.

I get on the phone with my ISP and complain. If it's going to be down for a while I could try doing a wifi hotspot off my phone. I do have a few offline games; X3, Evochron in case of emergency. I'll probably wait for NMS to make some more content before I get that. ME Andromeda is looking really nice at the moment. My net has only gone out a couple times in the last several years so I'm fortunate there.

Lol I just spent god knows how long doing "something" in NMS.

I still have no clue how to:
Get a better gun
You can find multitools at many planetary stations. Just look for a large red box on the wall and open it. You will also have the option from time to time to trade for them with aliens at various locations. And lastly, you can find one inside the Anomoly, inside a large, cylinar-shaped container which will open if you approach it.
Earn decent money
Sell stuff. Things like Vortex Cubes, Gravitino Balls, Venom Sacs, Aquaspheres and even Nutrino Modules all fetch decent prices, but the best money is made from selling either rare materials like Rubium or from selling manufactured materials like Lubricants and Explosives.
Get a better ship
Look for signal beacons. These will lead you to crashed ships, which you can claim and repair. You can also purchase ships from aliens at space stations and trade posts.
Upgrade my suit.
Look for Drop Pods. These will allow you to expand your suit's inventory. Other upgrades, such as Life Support, Environmental Protection and even your jetpack can be further enhanced by finding or purchasing Blueprints for new technologies.
Build a base that does something
Bases by themselves do not do anything. You'l need to add Specialist Terminals, recruit the appropriate specialist and complete their tasks to obtain the various blueprints they provide. This includes building vehicle bays and hydroponics systems to grow plants.
Kill more than 2 sentinels without dying.
Upgrades. Weapon upgrades, suit upgrades, and a bit of skill. They're not terribly clever, so shooting them from a good hiding spot works wonders.
Use the map
There isn't one. The closest you'll get is the Beacon, which will zoom out your view and give you a look around your immediate area.
Discover flying animals (they're out of range before the scan completes!)
Shoot them and scan their corpses. Or use the Zoom on your scanner. Standing under them helps too.
Build a buggy
You need to build a technical terminal first, then complete the tasks the Technician asks, which will include building a vehicle bay (all of them before you've finishes what the Technician has for you to do.

And i also have no flippin' clue what the game is actually about. What is atlas? And why do i need to go there?

NMS is a very different sort of game, and discovering what Atlas is is a part of the game.
No one can tell you what to do - because what you do is also a part of the game.
I have quite a few hours, and more than 9 million units to my name, not counting all the units I've spent buying Freighters and other odds and ends.
You'll find all manner of worlds out there, from completely barren and utterly featureless, to planets that threaten to boil you in your suit and melt you with rains of flouric acid, or freeze your very soul, to lush tropical worlds you may never want to leave again.

NMS is an Explorer's technicolor dream... with more to scan, and more tools to explore than anyone could ever think to ask for - and they work.

But, in some ways, it's very like Elite - it doesn't lead you around and guide you where to go or what to do. That is entirely up to you. And there's no need to follow the path of the Atlas either - you're free to completely ignore it too. The Atlas won't care either way.
