New to Elite and wanted to share the video that got me to buy the game!

There are a set of training missions in the game, along with a training video for each one (also available on YouTube, here's the playlist). It's extremely helpful to give each mission a try before jumping into the "real" game. They're also a great place to practice flying around.

This is good advice but I have to say that this also is the best time to appreciate "death" in the game proper, when the stakes are nothing. Buzz a capital ship. Test just how far a station can shoot. Rush the slot both ways in high traffic. Risk your life in combat against vastly superior vessels. The opening of the game is a great time of freedom.

Also, welcome aboard OP! o7

If this video made you want to buy the game, a video without a single shot being fired, without a single 'high energy dogfight', a video that was only about exploration and sights, then I think you'll fit into this game well.

It's a game for the long haul, take your time, learn the controls and set your keybinds in the tutorials, and decide what interests you. I run missions, do a spot of bounty hunting, and am saving up for an Asp-E. I've got an Eagle, a Viper and a Cobra in addition to the Freewinder, and I'm happy earning credits at a rate that other people would feel is holding them back.

Welcome to ED and the FDev forums, Frost. I truly hope you get out of this game what you're expecting from it based on that video (a great one it is - and there are so many others I could spend as much time watching them as I do playing this game). Lots to learn and it can all lead to some fun entertainment if that's your goal. Enjoy and visit us here from time to time, even if just to let us know how it's going.

Fly safe, Cmdr! o7

Tip - If you have a keyboard then bind a key to 75% throttle.
Auto-throttle works such that, in SuperCruise, when you are 7 seconds from your (target) destination and you set the throttle to 75%, you will slow down at just the right rate.

Bonus Tip - If you disengage the Target-Lock and hit 0% throttle at about 1Mm from your destination then, at a distance from destination that you choose, you can you can trigger the drop out of SuperCruise.

Welcome to the game.

There is great depth in the sandbox if you put the effort in, and years of fun to be had.

Awesome video and welcome Commander.
I would suggest you try exploration. See some of those things and more for real (virtual reality, I mean).

Welcome To ED.

:)

No other game like it.

Awesome video btw, I couldn't watch all of it though(on mobile data).

Good luck on your journey through the stars.
Just remember, money, ships, and ranks, don't mean squat if you're not enjoying it. Don't fall in to the grind trap! :)
Many of the seasoned CMDRs here still enjoy belting around in Cobra MkIII's.
Bigger is not always better. ;)

If you need help, just ask, nearly all of us are nice, and will help you here and in game if needed. :)

My one tip, that's not already been covered, is:

Never do "Just One More" of anything, in ED. :p
The galaxy somehow knows, and punishes you accordingly.
Cash in your data, or bounties regularly, to avoid loss. :)

Lovely video! I'm currently on the other side of the galaxy from Earth and this reminded me of so many things that I've seen on my travels, from the bright densely packed core to the blackness of the edge of intergalactic space! Elite is a fantastic game - it continues to evolve and there are many many paths you can take in it. It's okay to have a goal but generally it's not a game that gives things up easily - the journey is part of the experience, if you find yourself frustrated with one thing try something else for a bit. There's so many paths to walk, I recommend getting involved with a player group of some kind (see the forums), most of that happens outside of the game itself - search here!

2) Make sure the 'boost' button is nowhere near the 'deploy landing gear' button. Bad things happen.

You mean like how I used to map both to the same button with a modifier on my T-Flight? Before I blew up TWO ships because I forgot to hit the modifier button first? That sort of thing? :D

Welcome Commander. Wait till you experience it in VR. You're sat in your ship, not looking at monitor......[woah] Amazing....
Fly safe.

I still have to reach my finger over my boost button (the top one on the back of the throttle) to press my Reverse modifier (which is the button below it). Confusing boost and reverse, that's never going to cause a problem right? :p
