Interesting PAX East Write Up

Looks like another 'Winter is coming' quote from Lord Braben!

Well, winter came :p

But yeah, if those aren't direct words by Mr Braben, then they can be a misunderstanding (Sandy mentioned capital ships "gunnering", but as a possibility for an undefined future).

"The team has mentioned that they are planning huge ship designs that allow large groups to share crewing duties in a way that has never been seen before in a game."

Wow that would be awesome, so many people including me want to fly huge (capital) ships. :D  It's also a good end-game money-sink for rich players with billions of credits.

We'll need external docking or have smaller ships, such as ship launched fighters with cargo racks, haul cargo from the player capital ship to a station.

A player owned capital ship could also function as guild housing where players can hang out and decorate it.

I am talking from Frontier's point of view. If all they all get is snark, why should they want to bother sharing any information with the "community" until it is about to be released.

That's what my post says: DB shared it on his Twitter account last night.

Then they should say more than 'they are doing something cool'. Thats just about as miminal as it gets. And 'they are thinking about' isnt much either. Information is "we're currently working on X, here are some details Y and Z and a screenie." Then people have something solid. Just saying '2.4 is coming and it will be fun' is like a bakery saying "fresh bread will be for sale and it will taste great."

1) Obviously it will be bread, you're a bakery
2) I assumed already it would be fresh, what kind of bakery sells stale bread?
3) I know it will be for sale, bakeries don't lend bread.
4) Ofcourse you say it tastes great, what else could you say?

Its just non-info. :)

My hype glands are exhausted.

I'll wait until Sandro or Michael have something to share.

And my point of view being that the snark is because we are being ignored...if they discussed things in a bit more detail, the snark wouldnt exist. Same thing happens in real life...someone ignores me and I aint under any obligation to be hang on their every word...I have every right to remain very skeptical. So far, they havent given me any reason not to be and the complete silence merely justifies that skepticism because it suggests they couldnt care less about customer relations, and more about sales ^

You start the game with a small ship and the galaxy is yours to explore at your whim as you trade, battle, escort and try to thrive in the dynamic and complex world Frontier Developments has created.
Did Frontier make another space game I don't know about? Dynamic and complex this game is not, at least not yet. The Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor is complex and dynamic - the closest ED comes to dynamic or complex is the BGS but so far it doesn't do much other than flip some factions around for giggles. The BGS has much greater potential that has yet to be realised. And since when can we "escort" anything other than cargo and cargo substitute aka passengers?

The article just seems to gush about ED and how FD are very passionate - which is news to me since they don't communicate with us, their players, much. They seem to reserve these outbursts of passion for the media apparently. Now, I don't mean to put the article down but it seems to be written by someone who has discovered ED for the very first time and hasn't played many other space sims like Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos, which essentially offers a very similiar experience to Elite Dangerous except without the huge open world or the advanced graphics but it makes up for it with compelling characters, a moody and atmospheric world and your very own hidden asteroid base.

The article reminds me of my own newbie player's crush on ED, which is nice and truthful but it doesn't do much to explain that when that initial feeling of euphoria wears off you start to realise that the gameplay is shallow and repetitive and the game, while being a huge sandbox, lacks an essential level of depth and a compelling world. The world of ED feels dead and lifeless. The simulation of the galaxy is the only really compelling element but other than your own eyes you have no mechanics to speak of in order to go out and interact with it, or explore it. And while something like landing on planets, SRVs, SLFs, Different station interiors, Mega Ships and the Commander Creator are good fun the development of the game so far has not yet addressed the issues of gameplay depth and complexity in any meaningful way.

PS4 announcement always said PS4 would come with Horizons. FDev have never actually said PS4 version will release at 2.3. (although it is looking more likely now, hopefully). :)

Yes they have:

From Newsletter 154:

So what will PlayStation players get at launch?

The total package that anyone who bought Elite Dangerous: Horizons on PC or Xbox One would get. So that’s Elite Dangerous, Community Goals, Wings, Powerplay, CQC, Ships, Planetary Landings, The Engineers and The Guardians, plus 2.3: The Commanders which we’ll be launching before the PlayStation 4 release next year. The PS4 release includes the Horizons season pass, so, of course, you’ll get 2.4, too.

and even as of today is officially gone! :D

Ah yeah who can forget 'Winter is coming'...only now its 'Winter is over squire...did I miss something?'

This is why its difficult to have faith in them...then they wonder why we dont have faith in them...then they ignore everyone and the salt gets much worse...then they wonder why...

I am intrigued by the "huge ships" comment, or do you think it's the journalist mis-remembering Multicrew?

That saying in the Q&A stream during Pax Sandy talked briefly in response to questions about Gunner role, about bases using same gunner acapability.

Maybe 2.4 is bases and capital ships, as we go to war??
