The financial argument for free, universal ship names

There's no such thing as too much 'room to maneuver' when it comes to financials. Frontier are a small house publishing company they don't have masses of huge selling titles to fund (and defend against unforseen development delays in) developing titles, which is the way publishing houses tend to operate. Having a pool of money behind them is a good idea. But even that runs out pretty quickly, if problems in development delay a new season by even a couple of weeks.

You can justify everything with that...

Why...just why...was this so difficult for FD to enable visible names without a name plate, and then if people want to fork out for the cheapo-looking name tags on the ship they can?

I expect they could but would it make financial sense? I think probably not, in this case particularly because of the broadcast, ship scan aspect. The thread idea of giving some for free to show how great it is, so people will buy more, MIGHT work for paintjobs (might) and spacesuits but I think it falls down on this one because if you can send the name by scan, you've basically got it all.

Don't it always seem to go? Won't know what you've got, till it's gone.

Except even 'random' car reg number registration still happens, it's just hidden, in the cost of buying that particular vehicle; the dealer will usually reg a new vehicle for you (if they do, you’ll get a V5C registration certificate, log book etc.) however you still pay for that, and the actual physical number plate.

Was ship naming advertised as a feature coming in (as part of) Horizons? I don't think it was?? But in any case 'you' can name 'your' ship for nowt, in the HUD, so still haven't heard any real reason other than outrage and wish not to pay it, from anyone who already gets a free identifier with their Commander name, as to why registration/broadcast of a ship name across the galaxy is, a fundamental right? Would it be nice? Of course, free stuff always is, but vanity item sales have been a thing <and a part of ED's funding model> for quite a while now.

It's not about MY ship. If it was, I wouldn't really give a frig. For me, the naming is not very useful anyway, because the sort of names I had in mind are all too long to usefully fit into the space allowed.

My objection is that I can't unlock seeing other people's ship names. If we're going to pay, I'd want to pay and then be able to see all the names (unless someone had specifically set theirs to private or whatever for some reason.) Paying to broadcast my own ship name is just indulgence, but I'd be interested to see what names other people have come up with. With this model, I can't, unless they pay (which is a factor that I have zero control over.)

On the bright side, you'll now be broadcasting a powerful LOOK AT ME SPENDING MONEY IN THE STORE signal all across SC...

Well, that's gotta be an upside. I can do that whilst firing my coloured lasers from my purple ship.

(I do actually have a purple ship.)

Have you been keeping an eye on Frontier's annual financial reports? They certainly don't seem to need extra cash-flow from micro-transactions...

I am aware that they are doing well financially yes. You could argue that they are just milking us, but we don't know what expenses they have in the forseable future, be it hiring more people etc. This game has a development plan long enough, that it might just be money in the bank for future use.

Anyway, like I said, I'm quite against paywalling anything else than pure cosmetics. Other people's ship names being visible on the HUD have functional use, so I really hope they roll this back.

its, just, lol, i realy don't get it. Every stream i watch you dev guys seems to be a nice bunch of people.
But on the flip side, you hype us with hot air, releas patches full of bugs, give us new game features that are broken from the beginning (wings, guardians ruins, etc. pp.)

In order to rebuild some reputation, after letting us wait for an expansion we already payed you upfront over a year ago. You continue to deceive us with some realy obnoxious business decision.
It's making me sad, but my only possible solution to this is, i won't give you any more money, its a shame because i love the game, but you hurt my rightous feelings to much.

regards

Exactly. This has nothing to do with the poor Fdevs, living in squalor, begging from Mr Braben for every scrap of bread, and heating themselves by burning small mice, shortly before eating them for supper.

They made the decision to float on the stockmarket, therefore their financials are no longer our concern. Paying for vanity items is no longer to support the development, it's to add to their net worth, to show investors they're doing great and please can you buy some share in us because we're profitable.

I even saw some... other player compare paying whatever it is for ship naming, to a jpeg from Star Citizen! I mean, really? They said 'we have no problem paying for a jpeg'? Well, I don't know if I speak for everyone, but I can certainly speak for myself, and suggest that I have never bought a jpeg of anything, and I certainly wouldn't do it to 'support development' of that trainwreck.

Elite Dangerous is a game, initially funded by Kickstarter, but only to gauge public interest. It was abundantly clear there was a LOT, and so we have what we have. Except that pretty much every promise regarding in-game items has been broken, and instead we have the same blatent monetisation of ingame items we get on a Korean MMO. Or... a console game.

There is far too much coincidence for this cynic to dismiss the timing of the PS4 launch, and all these new cosmetic items. And, as a final point, someone quite rightly pointed out, we paid for the base game. We paid for Horizons, which was supposed to include all new gaming mechanics for this 'season'. Ship naming is a mechanic. It isn't just a decal, it is a PART of the game now, therefore I fail to understand WHY we should be forced to pay for something we already paid for. Nameplates, sure charge £20 each for all I care - they're cosmetic. But not scanning. That's very.. corporate.

It's called marketing PR. It's very sad. I mean, look at Star Citizen... they're the absolute masters at manipulating people to believing they can walk on water. Frontier are not anywhere close to their level of deviousness, but they're trying. Hiding their business plan under a veil of secrecy, Sandro didn't get his nickname by accident.

It's becoming another tragic tale of profit over quality sadly. It's happening everywhere, I can't think of many gaming publishers that are not purely driven by money, and not also pride in their chosen craft.

35 years of gaming, all ruined by the same thing that's ruined everything else in the world.

I agree with most, but the bolded part doesnt seem cynical but rather paranoid. FD has been consistently adding stuff since launch. First more and more paints, then bobbleheads, ship kits, lasers and now plates and Avatar stuff. Dont blame this on consoles. ;)

Frontier ... Sorry but have dropped the ball here .. This is a cynical cash grab and really you should be ashamed.

And that's coming from a shareholder.

I think it's pretty lousy that they're allowing people to give ships a name but then not broadcast those names as part of the information received as part of a scan.
If that data is supposed to be part of a scan then it seems willfully underhanded to deliberately redact part of that data simply to encourage people to spend money.

We all probably have a heap of ships and once we decide to "pull the trigger" on naming one ship, we're probably going to want to do the same for every ship we own and, at even a quid a go, that's going to be quite an investment, and quite a money-spinner for FDev.
And I'm pretty sure that FDev is well-aware of that, and that's why they're doing what they're doing.

I don't really care, either way, about visible nameplates but the idea of deliberately redacting information within the game unless somebody pays money so that information can be seen seems like a rather cynical cash grab.

Hi everyone,

There’s been a number of questions from Commanders regarding ship naming and how ship name plates will work so we wanted to give you a little more information about how these features will work when they’re released.

In-game ship naming

When you have named your ship in-game, your ship name will appear in multicrew grouping and in your HUD. In addition to this, in beta 5, when other people scan you, or target you in space they will be able to see your ship name in their UI. This feature will be available for all players of Elite Dangerous (both base game and Horizons players) including Xbox One, upcoming PS4 release and PC Commanders.

Cosmetic Ship Name Plates

The ship name plates will offer an added layer of cosmetic personalisation for Commanders wanting to wear their name with pride, much like paint jobs and other cosmetics currently available in the store.

Name plates will be made available in themed packs. These packs will contain three designs, each of which will be available in three colours: black, white, and grey. This makes a total of 9 nameplates per pack. After purchase, each pack will be available for use across all of your ships (Ship launched fighters and SRVs don’t have name plates) and each pack of 9 variant plates will be coming into store at just £2/€2.5/$3. This means that purchasing one pack of name plates will allow you to use that style across all of your current and future ships, at the same time and rename each individual ship as many times as you like. We believe this flexibility offers Commanders great value and is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

Thanks!

Phew, not as bad as we thought.

Edit: Doh - ninja'd.

Goodness sleutelbos, you're usually a fierce FD defender (as am I as a general rule), what's happening? ;-)

What's happening is that FD has made a mistake that they should correct. I'm not buying a ship name under the present conditions.

Ah, they have corrected the mistake (gets off barricade) :)

up top TL;DR Free nameplates would be a financial gateway to CMDRs buying more existing ship cosmetics. It's the difference between "The name appears on the ship? AWESOME! I gotta make my ship look badass now!" and "I've got to PAY for this for anyone to see it? Even ME? Are you kidding????" Plus, Frontier Support, brace yourself for a flood of tickets from users complaining they can only see ship names some of the time...

So it's been confirmed in the March 21st livestream that while players can name their ships, it will be visible only in the corner of the HUD to themselves and invisible on their hulls and to anyone else in the game.

The argument is that it's cosmetic and does not affect the game, but it is already generating a lot of complaints from players who see it as charging for something that should have been built in to the game from the start. This is a game where the spaceship is your fundamental presence in the game, Holo-Me notwithstanding. NPC ships will have visible names, but only players who purchase a "name plate" will have transponders, apparently, and can have their names appear visibily on the hulls. Personally, I agree with that sentiment. I think this is a lousy gesture from Frontier to their biggest fans, who are the ones most likely to pay for the "privilege" of naming their ship, and the ones most likely to resent it.

So I have a counter argument based on what seems to matter most here.

£ $ € Money € $ £

Frontier, I bet you will make more money in the end by making nameplates free. Why?

Market penetration.

If you charge for nameplates, there will be a percentage who will pay it, but there will be a far larger percentage who don't. The non-buyers include the group of customers who are going to be actively angry at being charged for a feature feel strongly should already be in the game for free. Those players are the types who will likely stop buying any future enhancements and represent lost revenue streams.

Then there are the types who won't buy them anyway because they don't care. You weren't going to make any money off of them, so no loss there.

Then there's another type, who might buy a nameplate if it's cheap enough, but then again, might not because it's too much money for too little, or it's a hassle to fill out the credit card form and actually buy something, or whatnot. They, too, represent lost revenue. These people might not even bother naming their ships.

But what happens if you make a basic nameplate free, visible to everyone in scans like CMDR Name, and on every hull so it shows up anytime the ship is on screen?

Every CMDR will see the name on their ship when they are on the loadout screens, or when they are in a fighter, or in MultiCrew, or that spiffy new camera mode. It'll be on screenshots and videos.

A ship name is a way for players to connect with their ships and it becomes an extension of themselves. Players who love their ships will see the name on their ships and want to individualize them further. How? "I ought to buy a skin. Maybe some weapon/exhaust coloration."

But it's the players who might not ever bother to even look at their ships who might now get roped into buying skins. Every time they see a screenshot of their ship and it's name on a bland gray hull, it'll increase the attachment to the ship and drive a desire to make it look cool. The thought process goes from "Pay to fill in the blank on the scanner and personalize your screenshot" to "Man, it's a shame that my baby the Awesome McCoolname is flying around in a plain brown wrapper. Let's see what's on the Frontier Store that fits my ship's character..."

Charge for exotic nameplates, but make the basic one free for every ship. It's a feature that your loyal fans have been asking for since launch. It's a feature that if you charge for will generate bad blood with the type of players you really should be trying to keep in your game. But all that aside if your goal is to make money, giving EVERY player in the game a reason to notice the exterior of their ship gives EVERY player in the game more incentive to making their ship look cool. Universal ship names is a gateway to cosmetic addiction, and I think you'll find a lot more CMDRs willing to shell out for a snazzy paintjob to make their personalized ship even more personal.

I don't know if this argument will sway Frontier or not, but I think it's sound, will make CMDRs happy, and will result in more cosmetic income for Frontier. If not, I humbly offer up to Frontier my idea for their next great cash infusion scheme to address yet another long standing player request:

http://i.imgur.com/YSeZV8n.png

After all, there's nothing wrong with charging for cosmetics, right?

Rest assured, if basic ship naming and seeing such name-plates on ships isn't in 2.3, I will not be buying it, and I will also boycott all other cosmetics and further expansions for this game.

Period.

I have bought many paint jobs, all the weapon mod colours, some bobbles and bits for the cockpit - and now we're going to have to buy more cosmetics for Holo-Me - Again, rest assured, I will not be purchasing any Holo-Me suits, cosmetics, hair-styles, etc., if they continue with this blatant money grabbing for such small tokens of loyalty and fan service like basic ship names - it's bad enough they send out emails trying to get people to BUY a god damn beta pass before the beta is up after 3-4 weeks of testing because they don't have enough beta testers.

Enough is enough.
