How to promote/reinvigorate smaller ship usage amongst the billionaires?

IMO limiting missions or other things to certain ships is terrible idea. It takes away the freedom we currently have in terms of ship choice.
On the other hand designing missions (and other things) in such way that they are easier to complete in certain ships is good idea, and i think it already works like this to a certain degree...

I have a cutter/vette/conda blah blah, what do I fly?? Cobra MK3. Just bc people have billions and all the big ships available doesn't mean we don't use smaller ships. Can't wait for the DBX buff in 2.3.

Different missions for different ships isn't a bad idea tbf, but this whole hate brigade on people that have billions and big ships, maybe some of us actually earnt it and deserve it and even if you didn't someone's balance and ships have nothing to do or affect anyone else

I think, when 2.3 hits I gonna get me a DBX and try exploring for a change, or I give the AspX another ride - but ultimatly I have to compare them to my Anaconda - I have some good rolled C5 and C6 FSDs...

I don't know. Perhaps. It might feel a bit forced. Changing ship is somewhat painful too (My ships are all over the bubble; I have no home.)

Maybe the mission giver could provide the ship. "Fly undercover in this tin can" or "Fly as a decoy in this known ship" or "We need to ship these 500 items, but our pilot has disappeared." And of course: "Don't steal the ship or face serious consequences." :D

Nice idea... I guess if you don't complete the mission in time, the ship self destructs so you can't steel it :)

What about it's load out though? ie: Pulse or beam lasers or multicannons etc? The fact you can get your ship to you in tens of minutes to then undertake the mission in it instead?

I am not sure where to stand on this...

I have over 5 billion in assets. Owning every ship in the game, and for some several of them - and I find myself flying some of them pretty regularly.

Sure I love my Corvette, but there are times I just have to admit it can't match what a FDL does in PvP, how a Python handles missions, or an ASP or DBX can actually explore, the times I take my Vulture out to do some work or even the time I took an engineered Sidewinder into a PvP fight.

So... sure *some more* content specifically for ship sizes might not be a bad idea, but there already is, isn't there? Big ships can't do everything all the time.

That would be awesome. But the salt here would be biblical.

That said, actually, yes. Remove credit farms then wipe all saves. :D

The ED community is the only community I have ever come across that seems to have this bizzare and unhealthy obsession with how other players are playing and enjoying their own game...

That a player of a game would be willing... no... even delighted to sacrifice likely many tens or even hundreds of hours of progress and playtime just so that FDev can wipe out the progress of other players who supposedly used "exploits" to get ahead, is just plain mind-blowingly insane.

It's extremely sad.

How does it take away freedom if it's additional mission variety?

Don't need missions to make me get out of my cutter or conda. Love flying my viper and cobra 3 which are both set up for big game hunting :)
Interdicting gankers at CGs in my ieagle and then pegging it is alot of fun

Sure... But maybe the challenge/risk of completing an assissation mission in an Eagle or Sidewinder as that's the only ship that can get to the target in question. ie: It's a mission requirement to use one.

Think if/when we ever get co-op missions where a Wing of friends could undertake such a mission (eg: all in Eagles), and the opposition is in similar class ships. And god forbid we ever get PvP orchestrated so enemy CMDRs also in Eagles at then sent against you...

Not suggesting this for all missions, just as a small subset to offer an interesting twist and reason to use specific ships.

The trick would be obviously to make what ever you have to do interesting/rewarding enough to use one of the smaller ships (again).

Any other ideas?

To what end? I don't understand what this is supposed to accomplish. Why is pushing people to smaller ships desirable? People already do so voluntarily if it's fun for them, why do you think we need mechanics to encourage it?

With some of the new structures being dropped in to 2.3, I can see a silent mandate to use smaller ships for some tasks, simply by ensuring the task requires maneuvering through an area through which a larger ship simply will not fit.

Who said anything about "pushing"? It's "offering"?

eg: A mission pops up for an assassination mission (of one or more other ships) to be completed in a Sidewinder?

Would be far too easy to simply take an FDL along, but with the pre-requisite of it being a Sidewinder the CMDR would turn up in, the opposition (missions) could be more logically balanced.

Space is pretty large and I can't see many places that a cutter can't get too. Why would a mission giver restrict the type of ship you use? Sounds kinda daft to me. Can't a player decide how they are going to play the game rather than being told how they have to play it?

The problem is, the more accomplished you become in game, the better the AI that you encounter. Actually, that's not a problem, but it does mean I'm going to avoid taking on Elite Anacondas in my Eagle, Cobra, etc. I'm sure some of the git gud folk routinely dispatch those AI with nothing more than a basic sidewinder. Good for them. :D

In terms of multirole ships, the Asp and Python are the kings in my book and I fly them both. Trade ships--makes sense to A-B trade with the largest vessel you have.

Today, the Cobra, Viper, etc. sit in my garage, waiting for the day I can employ AI to fly them to do things for me. Barring that, they'll stay in the garage.

So when's the last time you did any serious gameplay in a Cobra Mk3?

I use a Cobra MkIII for space salvage missions...

I also use a Viper MkIV and an Imperial Courier regularly. I have no large ships, and just three mediums, an AspX for exploration, an FDL for pew pew and a multi purpose Python. And I've played since beta, so couldn't really help becoming a billionaire (although I'm only just there...) :D

Aside normal consequences, in every station you land there is a change that the stolen ship and cargo will be confiscated and you are back in a Sidewinder. You may try to avoid this by bribing the station or using your reputation. (Who visits most systems in a stolen ship could be a nice community mini-game.)

What about it's load out though? ie: Pulse or beam lasers or multicannons etc?

Deal with whatever the mission giver gives to you. That's part of the challenge. Or perhaps use a limited amount of mission giver's money to tweak the ship.
