THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

Sorry if this point was already made (I didn't explicitly see it mentioned previously) but someone commented that Phaeton is a known IRL asteroid, while another person observed that "Phaeton's Reach" is capitalised like a name. What if this alludes to an asteroid-based Mega Ship after 2.3 drops?

As for the other cryptic clue, some great ideas! I particularly like the 1984 reference and the magnificently astute observation of DB-IB on the old Lakon ship. I read on with intereste... :)

The video is a warm up to ensure you're all paying attention. ;) Seriously, everything required will be in-game. This is more a "save the date everyone" notification. We want to reach as much as the playerbase as possible without giving too much away to early on. Doing so would compromise what we're trying to do. It's a balancing act.

For avoidance of doubt the event on the 29th will take place in the vicinity of the bubble. This doesn't preclude other stuff happening deep in the void...

Cheers,

Drew.
Many thanks for the reassurance. (Now I have to decide whether I want to be in the bubble or out in the void - but I'm always making that decision every day I'm not Buckyball racing.)
As far as reaching the widest possible audience is concerned, might I suggest that these CoR posters and the trailer are used in the weekly newsletters, since those go out to many more players than are on the forums?

I think you are addressing the wrong audience. IF you want to reach as much as possible form the non CoR and Cannon and other tinfoil groups you (all involved in this) will need to reach the normal player.

First explain them why that date is interesting, what is interesting in the whole storyline and why any player not interested in the RP of a little player group might want to participate.

Currently it looks like it will be just a private group event for CoR and in the worst case it will be an event that affects everybody but is tailored for CoR and a few others. Potentially alienating a lot of players because the whole Formidine Rift Salome story just looks a lot like "nepotism".

Sorry to sound so harsh and it's not my intention to accuse you of anything, I'm just trying to explain the problems I see.

100% agree. The event has not been promoted enough. I like to think I keep my ear close to the ground but I found out about it by accident (I can't actually remember how, probably a comment in a forum post). Has it, or will it be, in the newsletter?

At the moment it just looks like another set of obscure riddles to solve so, being Tim nice but dim, I won't even bother I'll just wait and watch the inevitable Obsidian Ant video to see what happened.

The method to reach the widest possible audience would be an in-game CG, that completes when the first Commander turns it in, like some mystery hunt ones before. "Obtain an ancient probe, believed to be carried by the fugitive CMDR Salomé, deliver it to Station X, here are clues." Competing CG-s (if one succeeds, the other fails) could also be done for this, to give the Commander a choice to make.
Just my two cents, of course.

Also, to those looking at the video: its title is "Clue29c", so I think it's a reasonable assumption to make that this isn't a standalone clue. Of course, 29c could mean that it's the "c" clue for Apr. 29, or 29c could simply mean March 29, the date the video was published. We'll see with the next one.

"At Phaethon's Reach, follow the path of souls."

"Of the characters in Greek mythology called Phaethon (/ˈfeɪ.əθən/; Ancient Greek: Φαέθων, Phaéthōn, pronounced [pʰa.é.tʰɔ͜ɔn]), the best known was the son of the Oceanid Clymene and the solar deity Helios. Alternatively, less common genealogies make him a son of Clymenus by Oceanid Merope, of Helios and Rhodos (thus a full brother of the Heliadae)[4] or of Helios and Prote." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phaethon).

Phaethon was precipitated by Zeus in the Eridan river.

So maybe it means that we'll find something in the Achenar system or close to it ?

Sounds feasible - and I think we have to involve the ORIGIN ("at Phaeton's Reach" ) from where to stride along that path...... I'd like to propose to plot a route from SOL (one could locate Phaeton's REACH or RANGE in SOL) to ACHENAR and follow it.

EDIT: but how to get this route nearly congruent to the ERIDANUS constellation ?!?!?

EDIT 2: just found out that in ERIDANUS (German Wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eridanus_(Sternbild) ) there is the "Eridanus Supervoid" (VOID), discovered 2007, a very cold area with nearly no stars nor any other stellar objects. As we know, Thargoids like cold climate........

Starting from Sol is making sense, as, in the mythology, the story of Phaeton is symbolizing the path the Sun is running under the horizon.

Which, to be fair, is a good question. And is also asked with every CG, in-game event or anything.
The question was about reaching the widest possible audience though, not about motivating them to take part.

This is true. Promotion wise, it's early days, stay tuned on that.

As for whether people will care, that's entirely up to them. Horse, water, etc. :)

Cheers,

Drew.

Phaethon means "the shining" or "radiant one" from the Greek verb phaethô "to shine."
also Phaethon is the name for Jupiter or Saturn... so does this mean we'll need a Sol permit for the premonition event!

Well, Drew did say a while ago that we'd need a Sol permit "soon".

He also said on Redditt that the 29/4 event would help us in the FRift mystery hunt, but I suspect it may give us another clue or two rather than the answer

Why make an event that effects everybody and then not try to motivate everybody to at least think about it?

If an event is made and the organizers of that event don't care about motivating as many players as possible - why should anybody care about that event?

Since all this increasingly looks like an internal CoR party I will now stop making comments about it.

Since it is common knowledge that you hold a grudge towards CoR why don't you just oppose us during the event? That would be absolutely o.k. and by the way much more constructive than the repeated accusations of favouritism. Currently there are many more player groups involved in the preparation of the event than CoR. This is much bigger than an internal CoR party.

From Drew's latest response, I don't think you need to worry. We're here in the forums in the Formidine Rift thread with our best ear to the ground, so it's natural that we'd hear about something first. In due course, hopefully soon, very many more players will find out that something is going on through various media and also learn enough about the background to the event to be able to make informed decisions about what they do during it. I think that attention will be growing a bit anyway as the storyline is mentioned more on social media (it has featured on Obsidian Ant's YoutTube channel and also on the BroCast) but the challenge is to reach those players who have not been involved in the game outside of the game, so to speak.

Now understanding why it was so far-fetched to be admitted inside the inner circle of some players group !
Story-line inside information !

Thanks !

But what about us poor folks stuck outside player groups?
