The mission system is a real Pain

So I am trying to increase my Siruis reputation so I can unlock one of the engineers, and jesus if the mission system does make an already grindy process a teeth grindingly awkward one.

The system just doesn't throw up enough missions, if I am lucky I get a single low paying mission each time I visit the station, so this is sloooww progress.

Also, the rewards for REP and INF are always ++, there are never any missions with higher REP or INF rewards, and never any with lower REP or INF rewards, no matter how good my reputation with a faction is, and no matter how my rank is in any stat.

I've also noticed that the rewards for, or amount of missions I get offered have barely changed from when I was at base ranks, to those I get now my ranks are much improved, and I am 200hrs in.

Maybe I am doing something wrong.....

You don't have to use missions to get friendly with them, trading will do it as well. Have a look at what they need in the commodities market and look on EDDB.io to see where you get that item cheaply.

Or go mining at a pristine metallic and sell all the metals to them for 100% profit, it all adds up to them liking you. Trading is faster though.

Interesting post!

In what respects?, or is that sarcasm!

Ok, so I have been doing it wrong then, I thought the (best) way to gain REP was through the missions.

You could try bounty hunting or handing in exploration data. Missions are not the only method of rep. Bounty Hunting, or Combat Bonds if yo are lucky enough to have CZs, seem to be a lot quicker at repping up. Missions take ages these days.

Not sarcasm o7.

Actually it never occurred to me to advise, about ranking through trading. But if your experience throws up a separate problem, with the mission system, that's worth flagging up .. maybe worth some bug reports? All the missions rep gains, do seem to be ++ .. off the top of my head anyway.

That issue is a known bug, and already fixed in the 2.3 beta.

It was talked about in a livestream, although it's very hard to verify independently, but the claim by devs is that it's a display issue, and for some missions you'll get high/low rep adjustments.

That's good to know, thanks.

I'll see if I can find a local BH zone, or a decent trade route.

Not doing it wrong as such but if you have a lot of cargo space you'll rattle through the millions of profit by trading faster than any other method. If in a smaller ship you could try bounty hunting as smiths121 suggests as well, missions are OK but give set rewards where as I turned up in a Cutter with 3 hours of mining a pristine metallic and pretty much got allied instantly.

The best way to gain rep, is to do a mixture of different things. Missions, trade and sellable system scans (exploration) can all help. The best way for me, was to do some exploration, come back and sell the data to the correct faction. That got me the rank easily and some credits.

Or do missions, always have an advanced discovery scanner, scan any system you haven't already scanned and hand that in as well for a rep boost.

Mission payouts until you grind up to friendly are low, I too am trying to get aligned with Sirius. Was bemoaning this last night with my brother who also plays and he said same advice as above. Faster way is to do bounty hunting in the system and hand in rewards at Sirius controlled stations, or the trade method, or exploration method.

As thsi waa toward end of my session I haven't yet switched up, but think I will try trade as the systems I have seen with Sirius controlling status do not appear to have RES sites in them.

have you tried mode switching? it's obnoxious but one of the fundamental 'mechanics' that makes up for the poorly thought out progression and reward system: you're not supposed to 'grind', but just keep doing stuff for fun and eventually things would happen. which is a nice concept but unfortunately a no go for most gamer's mindsets and thus: mode switching to refresh the mission board.

We can - of you prefer - go back to how it was, with every mission rank-locked to your rank, so you'd have been forced to only take 'harmless' jobs when you started, instead of being able to take Elite-ranked ones right from the start, then complain that rewards aren't increasing?

So unless it's been fixed (cant locate bug i submitted for this, mission payouts are kinda broken.

For example, i had two missions to deliver goods from the same place, offered by the same faction, to the same place.

The higher ranked mission:
- paid less credits
- had no material rewards
-required hauling more materials.

I.e. lower ranked missions were outright better.

Edit: found it. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/323188-Mission-rewards-Less-pay-for-more-effort

Well, no, of course not, but the system as it is currently working, isn't great either, REP and INF are the same for every mission, regardless of rank or faction standing.

I did a bunch of things to get my Sirius permit. The key for me personally is to have fun doing whatever I'm doing, so yes I had a particular goal in mind and was working deliberately and intentionally towards it but I made sure I kept doing different things (as suggested above). This meant that when the missions dried up, I just went on to other activities to work towards the goal.

Yes, it's a grind - no doubt about it whatsoever but I think it pays to remember that we have a bunch of different options available to us.

Yes, I was misinformed / confused, and assumed that missions (i.e. direct contact with the faction I wanted to rep) would be the most efficient way of doing it.

Took "ages" doing missions for Sirius.
As soon as some helpful person on the forum reminded me bounty hunting goes towards rep things......sped up a little (read - a lot)!!!
