Why do you explore?

For me it's mainly about being able to put my name on a system that's cool or out of the ordinary, not to mention the thrill of hunting exotic and unusual systems down. Ringed neutrons and white dwarf stars? Yes please. 9g landable planet? Absolutely. Finding things like that are what make it worthwhile to me.

In all seriousness, for me it really is two different things: scientific discovery and preservation. In other words, While there is a lot of discussion on this thread about the narrow depth of game play in exploration, the game makes up for this in extreme depth in content (for those willing to find it). For example you can find out a lot about a particular region, or star, based on information the game provides (location, star type, age, material composition, density, etc) that actually tell a consistent story. These narratives are not "given" at first glance, but through a comprehensive investigation we can find these patterns and deduce what causes them.

Secondly, I love capturing footage and telling the story of a particular trip. Better then that, I like to watch and rewatch these videos - reliving the adventure.

Simply put, I only explore because I have to go to a new system.

Exploration is stunningly boring for me.

People say "OOOOH look at the shiney new planets/moons/stars". Been there done that.

It just takes way too much time. Even in a well fitted AspX, going 1000 LY is painful. Boringly painful.

You can make all the back stories you want to about being 35K LY from Earth, but its just that, a story, a JPEG based story.

Mind you this is MY opinion and not that of some others, and I'm fine with that. But to me, Exploration is dull. As dull as mining.

When I say I get bored I get told "watch a movie while doing this" or "Read a book".

I play Elite when I don't want to read a book (I find TV and movies stunningly low intelligence, and try to avoid them, with some notable exceptions).

So what you are saying is in fact that you don't explore for fun only if you have an in game goal to achieve yes?

Fair enough.

My exploration so far has took me maybe so far as 5kly outside of the bubble. I look at lots of stuff and then go back and shoot bad guys :)
I've toyed with the idea of a trip out to Colonia etc to break that distance record so to speak but long distance travel I find quite boring.
And knowing me I'll get distracted about a 1/3rd of the way there and head off somewhere else.

I explore because, if I really owned my AspX, that is exactly what I would do.
Get away from all the hassle of the bubble, the pewpew, the quest for more this and extra that, the upgrade race, worrying about dpm, how to counter the new meta, ad nauseum.
I'll leave that to those happy to wallow in the cesspool that is the bubble. I try to keep it on my six as much as possible

Because is the only way to find the way back home, to the bubble!!! I hated the bubble too but a two years exploration trip puts things in a different perspective ;)

When I was a kid I fantasized about being able to get up close and personal with stars, black hole, and alien planets, without the constraints of technology limitations. Exploration fulfills that childhood fantasy. And as soon as I learned how to read I started collecting any National Geographic with anything about space travel. Playing this game reignited my fascination with space, and I've done a lot of research and reading about astronomy, learning about the stuff I'm finding in the game. It's still fun filling a ship with cargo and fighting off pirates, but exploring an accurate to-scale model of the galaxy is what got me hooked.

  • Visiting famous stars, nebula and places, and reading up on them on the way
  • Getting my name on interesting places
  • Following various story lines (Formidable Rift, Dynasty etc)
  • An exploration bucket list (see first bullet)
  • Taking a periodical change of pace (switch to soft aqua hud and listen to chill out / space / yoga music)
  • And the tiny chance of maybe, just maybe, stumbling upon something unique and special

I need to get another KB and go a wandering again. Maybe this time I'll stay out for awhile. finding the bubble a bit same ol' same ol' currently

For the love of the game.
I've always loved astronomy. How can you not be fascinated by it?
Sure its a game. A rough simulation.
We don't what's really out there.. We likely never will.

I've been exploring for almost 17 months.
(I post often and am well known here)
Exploration is not for everyone, I get that.
For me It's finding nice stuff.
Scanning systems for loot.
Finding the Rarest of the Rare.
And just surviving.
But I love seeing what a system might show me.
I have a ways to go yet.
I just love it.

I could say: "Duh, 'cos it's (out) there."

But I'll go with: "I'll find that murderous slimy Purple Meteor yet! Why, oh why did those kids put fuel scoops in the Edsel?"

Loot ?
Is there anything to pick up outside the bubble except materials ?

Im planning for a long trip after 2.3 and i an considering bringing a cargo rack.
but i am thinking i wont ever need it.

Not unknown to run in to canisters of gold in POIs.
I missed out on a few because of packing an SRV and no racks. Not sure if I can pack both in my AspX though. It's so long since I went to outfitting

I am coming back from a 5k+ Ly trip in my Asp X and my 32 units cargo rack is almost full of valuable legal salvage found at the POI spots of the landable planets.

Much of the cargo I found was narcotics and escape pods, though. I left those items there. Not valuable enough for me.

My next exploration journey shall be in my 2.3 improved DBX and I won't have room for a cargo rack, I am afraid.

Now while I very aware that everyone would like more content for their own particular game style etc It still seems to me that the exploration forum (this one) is one of the most active and friendly one's here.

Totally.

For me, its actually what some might say is the RNG element, although actually as we all know its proc gen. But every time i jump into a new system i get all excited to see what the stellar forge has cooked up for me this time... well, unless its a protostar, those can be pretty bland, although ometimes they do throw a nice curveball.

But now we have star filters for route plotting, its so much better for exploration.
