Budget graphics card?

The GTX 1050/1050ti is roughly equal to the GTX 960 in terms of performance. On my system, when playing at 1080p I get a steady 60 in space dropping to the 40's on planets with high settings. My system is hobbled by the AMD processor its based around too, that i5 shouldn't be.

It's an older i5 though (4-5 years I think), so I'm not expecting a high-end gaming experience :)

The Zotac GTX 960 2GB runs the game in 1080p at mostly max settings at 75fps with occasional drops into the 50s teamed with an overclocked AMD FX6300 and 16GB ram. If you want to spend more, a Palit Super Jetstream GTX 1060 6GB provides a nice 1440p 75fps experience. As does the Asus Strix RX 480 8GB (at the moment on sale for around £220 if u can find one). Edit - read your case size, the RX 480 is huge so no go.

950 manufactured in 2015-2016
1050 manufactured 2016+ marginal upgrade to 950
1050 ti overclocked 1050 +25% clock speed 4gb vram

1050 ti not worth the increased price for a minor upgrade

4gb vram u dont need to play games its just clickbait to trick you into paying more for same performance

Thank you. Looks like it squeaks slightly over the budget, but not by enough to matter. I'll add that to the list of possibles.

Probably worth saving a few extra pennies for the 1050Ti. Comparisons I've seen seem to make it a clear winner, though, honestly, perhaps look at a used 960/970? They'd barely be a year old, and still in warranty...

I have a 970 in my PC & it runs fine, but I'd be surprised if they were that cheap s/h.

Have to say I agree with the s/h approach, all those early adopters sell off their old cards when the new one comes out, it's too tempting to rule out completely.

At that price you're looking at the RX460 & GTX 1050 and GTX 1050ti.

The RX460 is cheapest, starting around 90 quid. It'll run elite at 1080p just fine. Although not at highest settings. The GTX1050 is usually around £110 - but most people seem to think the TI is only slightly faster since they're both power-constrained. To be honest, they scale nicely with price/performance. Elite is really NVidia optimised, so in your case I'd go for the GTX 1050. Although, personally, i'd find the extra for a TI variant.

GTX 1050 or maybe an RX 470 or 1050 Ti could fit in that budget.

Wouldn't 2GB be enough though?

No, not unless you want to be needlessly sacrificing texture quality and increasing load/transition times.

I would never recommend less than 3GiB of VRAM for 1080p Elite: Dangerous. 2GiB will run, yes, but it's worth it to have more.

I have used the 2GB version, and had no problems whatsoever. :)

Problems are relative.

There are very tangible improvements to IQ to be had with the better texture/filtering settings, and they have a marginal hit on performance...as long as one has the VRAM to use them.

Most transitions are also sped up tangibly.

Thanks all.

In your opinion, is it likely to be the card that producing the slow-downs? It's mostly in-cockpit movement (switching to nav panels, etc).

You could do with some more system memory, but your current GPU is by far the weakest link in ED performance.

Not really, the 950 & 750 were very similar, with the 950 just being a rehash of the older cards architecture. The 1050 is an entirely different beast altogether, with brand new architecture to boot. The 1050, 1050Ti & 960 all trade blows in system tests with the 960 (just) coming out as the better card overall in terms of performance.

Neither the 1050 nor the Ti variant would be a good upgrade from the 960, but both are massive upgrades over a 710 and decent one over a 950/750.

GTX1050 is the best bang for £100 new.

You might scrape a used GTX970 on ebay (about 50% faster) for £100, or you might find clearance deals on a GTX960 (about the same speed as a GTX1050).

Although 4GB is nice, none of the 4GB cards at £100 are fast enough to warrant the extra memory over a 2GB GTX1050 or 2GB GTX960.

I had a GTX970 - beast of a card, but seeing as I bought a rift, I got a 1080 for VR. Otherwise, the 970 was very well suited to my 1080P ED gaming.

950 and 1050 are not even remotely the same, nor is the 1050 Ti just an "overclocked" 1050.

The 1050 Ti not only sports a higher clock speed and more memory, it also has 25% more shader units, to say nothing of the architecture improvements it has over a Maxwell 950.

I'd save a few more pennies and get a 1050 Ti, if I were in the OP's position, or look for a used higher end card, like a 970 or maybe even a 290X.

You are right I didnt check the detailed specs, theyre not the same cards but their performance is the same, marginal upgrade for 30% more money, still not worth it.

Again, thanks for your input everyone.

A shiny new 1050 is winging its way to me as we speak.

Nice. Best thing about the new GTX 1050 models (built in Samsung's 14nm process) is that they are ridiculously low-power. It depends on which exact model you picked up but if you're lucky it won't even need a 6-pin PCIe power connector and it'll sit there very quietly sipping just 75W from the motherboard. The older cards need twice as much power (or more) meaning added heat, added fan noise, and extra connectors (or adapters if your power supply doesn't have the necessary ones).

Let us know how it goes!

I'm in need of a GPU upgrade, but I'm having trouble deciding which one, and I'd like some feedback on frame per second from the nVidia GTX 1050 (and Ti versions), at 1080p, to compare to my current graphics card (AMD HD 6870).
I'm also looking at the AMD RX 470 too, which should drop in price for the 570 release. Hopefully.

I basically won't upgrade if it's not atleast twice as good. :p
My old card is surprisingly capable for its age. But i forget what settings I'm using. But it's mostly smooth. :)
