To follow up Dabir's post, are you guys all playing with the camera facing your character? Or do you just sit there like that for hours at a time?

It's a first-person game.

It's a first-person game and nice "you must be gay" jab there, real classy, lost a lot of respect for you there.

You're just a weirdo.

But you'll see your avatar every time you enter a station, use the free camera mode and the comms system?!

Speaking personally, I play a female character because I enjoy writing fiction and it's always been easier for me to write and Rp as a female than a male, despite being male. The fact that the female main characters in my stories tend to have had rough backstories (the one I'm writing for publication was a slave for the first 15 years of her life) and tend to enter into long-term romantic (but not sexual by the time the story ends) relationships, though, that's all personal taste and ease of writing.

I don't even know where to start with the misogyny and sexism inherent in your comment.

That you don't see / realise it, is scary enough. That other people have agreed with you though makes me shudder.

Just what is it about a woman's life that makes it more 'simple' for you to wrap your tiny mind around? Alternatively, why is a man's life more 'complex'? And I only said 'tiny', not to insult you (honestly) but because you have stated you don't have the capacity to think or write about complicated things.

You're not posting from the White House or Russia are you?

You just made all that up yourself.. that's not what he actually said. He said he found it easier to RP as a female. He didn't draw any conclusions about why that was. He certainly didn't express any views that it was to do with the simplicity or complexity of the characters. Why are you putting words into his mouth? And why did you jump so freely to calling him a misogynist? That screams of hyperbole to me.

didn't know there are tumblrinas in this forum

I've tried to make several male characters but there's something about the look of the Males in the character creator that really bothers me. None of them look right. They all look like latin american bandits or middle eastern terrorists, one even looked like Watto from star wars (only money).

I haven't had this problem in other games like Eve Online, but there is a bias in the Elite Character Engine to the creation of un f u c k a b l e lard arses. I like male characters as I'm a man in real life and wouldn't want to confuse anyone in the game by mixing the sexes but I can't make a likeable male mug-shot so I feel forced into a female result which is ok, but not really what I want. Still, I do plan a long voyage into the black soon, so then it won't matter what I look like as no one will be seeing me anyway...

Hey, were you going to respond to my post to you further up this page?

He didn't say anything about 'simple' or 'complex' – as Nerwan's just said, I think you're putting those words in his mouth. There is something a bit squick about what he said, something in the depths of why a guy would find something 'right' about writing about women who have rough, agency-denying backstories and then end up in a relationship (with a man?), but... if that sense of squick is right, it's probably something for a therapist, not for a forum poster, to delve into.

Too many people use that same "jab" to describe those of us who choose to make female characters.

Also, out of your repeated mention of it being a first person game please remove the first-person part. You are left with: "Its a game." Ouch. So with the understanding that you don't get to play the game for others, all that's left is why.

The question why will garner many answers, none of which are wrong or lesser than your reason why you do or dont. Remember that, especially in a game about blazing your own trail and doing what you find fun.

No. It's a first-person game.

No. It's a first-person game.

*facepalm*

I'm not telling you to take back what you said. It was a hypothetical...forget it. I'm talking to a brick wall.

I'll just say that I'm willing to bet we'll only be seeing more and more of our characters as time goes on. No sense justifying what has NO need to be justified anyway.

Exactly.

But if you are going to justify it, the argument that you "enjoy looking at feeeeeeemaaaaaaaaaales" is a bad one, because it's a first-person game. Yes, there's a camera suite, but if you're actually playing the game, you're doing it from first-person.
