How did you guys do it?

I want a corvette. I am currently an Ensign and it is taking ages to get a little bit of progress in the ranks.

So am I missing like a trick on how to rank up faster? Because it took me 2 days to just get a 15% increase. Or is Ensign a particularity harder rank to progress through?

Any tips on good ways to rank up would be appreciated because this mission farming is getting tedious and ridiculous.

Imperial was easy, Wu Guinagi/HIP 10716 was good for data missions. Or Quince was great if you were stacking scan missions. As for Federation, Ceos/Sothis had a lot of data transfer missions at one point for Fed, but I'm going to try and get a good Compromised NAV in a Fed system and bounty hunt my way up as I need the ranks in Combat anyways. So this will be a good 2 for one...

Well it should work if you go to a Fed controlled system and there's a compromised NAV there then all the wanted ships should be fair game as long as they aren't aligned with the minor Fed faction in power. And you hand in all the bounties to the minor Fed faction in power at a station. Anyways that's how I just ranked up with Alliance just this week and it worked great, and a lot faster than doing missions...

Try not to farm, the Corvette is a good ship but if you just rush to get it you're kind of missing the point of the game.

Play your own way & all that but try to enjoy the journey, and think about what you want to be able to do with the Corvette. You can probably do that in other ships too, & have fun doing the thing you like while working your way towards your goal.

You'll need the cash to buy & outfit it once you unlock it too of course. Budget around a billion including enough to cover rebuys.

Are you by any chance confusing rank with reputation? As far as I am aware, only missions count towards rank progression. Of course, gaining faction rep does increase the number of missions available from those factions, but it doesn't increment rank directly.

Oh damn you're right, Alliance doesn't have a rank, it only has the reputation. Good call, I was looking at the wrong thing. I wish there was a good combat option for gaining rank other than missions like bounty hunting.

And yes I can't even find a good system to allow donation missions since every time I check 17 Draconis is never in a war state anymore...

Hey if grinding it out works for you, go for it. I did the grind for my Cutter at Wu Guinagi/HIP 10716 over about two weeks. I mixed in some local combat missions for variety.

The grind earned enough money for the ship. And as a bonus stocked up on engineering materials from mission rewards.

The extra trading ability from the cutter earned my a mining clipper, and a combat FDL.

Right now my AspX is my go to ship (some exploring, and with good rep i pick up a couple of 2-5m tourism missions at a time), and my FDL for combat. But if I need to do some hauling or make some fast money I bring out that Cutter.

But if you want combat, I wouldn't get your hopes up. As previous person mentioned, combat builds are insanely expensive and without that additional money it will be a dud.

Good advice!
If you make it work it will feel like a damn job - trust me I tried it once for 3 days; never again.
If you were close, as in a couple of hours of missions away, I would say go for it but you have quite a ways to go.
Just play the game I say and let it come - enjoy the trip.
And you'll need the money that time brings anyway - depending on your plans for your Corvette that is.

Stack data missions from 1 system to another and back. Search the forums for Federation Rank and you will find a cmdr that mentions 2 systems and says "there you go". Sorry that's all I remember. I went to Admiral (all the way for the heck of it) in 2 weeks. Play your way, you want a corvette ? stack missions if you want to. o7

Yeah, always thought combat bonds should count. For RP reasons, I stuck at Lt Cmdr, but recently decided to aim free a Corvette eventually with my second commander. Just getting the Sol Permit was incredibly slow... especially as Im trying not to increment combat rank too much with it. (This is where rep gets painful).

I donated and aweful lot of cash to the federation...

Me too... :S

I picked up missions as I was running trade loops. Since I was running 4 different legs, it pretty much covered everything as far as goods. Made tons of cash, maxed my rep with many different factions and ranked up all at the same time. Bit on the boring side, but a lot better than mode swapping and stacking missions.

This was all long before Horizons. I'd imagine it's still viable today. Perhaps moreso than it was back then.

Ranked mostly when it was "bring us 2t of grain" and they sold it at the same station. Thought "thanks, that's nice n easy", some of them were back to back too. Dunno what's going down today, spam the donations, is that still a thing?
