Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club Presents: Heavy Metal

I've been distracted as well but by preparations for the 29th, so I don't think I'll be running my T6 again, sadly. I have been feeling a bit fatigued this week generally, as otherwise I might have raced as much as for Advanced Options. My best PPS run for my T6 has been 283.44 and I think the slow loading of my instances and menu screens is going to stop me from improving. I updated my graphics drivers on Friday in an attempt to sort out a graphical glitch and it has caused everything to slow down (and the glitch is still present).
.
It also seems likely that I've lost a module to a bug, when I modded a PA, got a good roll and experimental effect, bought a new PA from the Engineer and stored the old one and then found the old one had just vanished! Something to be careful of when visiting Engineers - I would not have wanted that to happen with grade 5 DD, given how hard it is to come by CIF. At least the outfitting of my Courier is complete, now. One rebuy and counting in my efforts to learn how to fly the thing properly at 700m/s...
.
Looking forward to seeing how some of these close contests resolve! Fly fast! o7

I made a few T9 runs yesterday, two of which I completed - well off the pace for now though. I did think that I'd be sneaking ahead of furrycat, but an outstanding new run by my feline friend ended any chance of that.

If I don't get chance to make another run before the end, then I'll submit my slow time this evening. :(

I did have another run that would have been an improvement I think (still no challenge to the leaders), but the traffic controllers got muddled up and told me I was trespassing even though I'd got docking permission! I'd missed the slot initially which contributed to the confusion I think. I managed to get back away two seconds before the station was due to open fire on poor Baymax!

I also had a quick go at a T7 run before bedtime. That was short lived though - boosted straight into the inside of the docking bay - boom!! So I might not even have chance to get onto the bottom of the board in a T7. :(

I'm still hoping to make a few more runs tonight after work, before the midnight (7 pm local) deadline.

Of course, I was also hoping to make a couple runs last night, but real life (aka my nieces and nephew) distracted me.

I tried a few runs in my T-9, but I think I over-stretched the finances a bit too much to be competitive in it. I don't tend to have a lot of money due to a history of spending too much time in the black and then ruining my ship before getting a chance to sell the data. :) Likewise, said time "out there" means that Jak has no Engineered components with which to be competitive in the ships I can afford. So I think I'm done as well. I'd race with Seneh, who spent some time getting to know the Engineers, but she's closer to Jaques than Marshburn. :)

Thanks for hosting, as always EZ!

I've submitted a T9 time, slightly better - still last place, but at least over 1500pps.

I might have time for one or two more runs before midnight - I don't think I'm good enough to challenge the top places, but I could improve my position if I manage not to mess up my SC. I'm nowhere near 1000s let alone the 14 or 15 minute times that the leaders appear to have.

Well flown guys, girls and cats. o7

Well, that's it for me. Apart from another Type 7 run that I won't submit because it was slower (even though it was a slighty higher PPS it doesn't feel like an improvement) and a started run without a started video capture I haven't managed any runs today.
And now I'm too tired to try anything else, so I guess my 14 min barrier will have to wait (until I try it for fun - or forever).
I'm a bit unhappy that I could only do three attempts at this (I really need to enhance the mobility of my Desktop PC :D) and I'm absolutely horrified at the thought of maybe loosing the two leaderboard top slots :p

But it has been loads of fun (and a good amount of credits), so thanks very much for hosting EZ! :)
I think I haven't had enough experience with all the trading to do a proper wall of text (and time will be scarce next week aswell), but I'll post my spreadsheet and videos tomorrow, maybe somebody can get something out of it.
Good luck for all the last-minute attempts, fly fast CMDRs! o7

Intent To Race:

Commander Inga Stevenson
Ship Type: Transporter Type-6
Ship Name: Santa Vaca
Cargo Capacity: 112 tons

Never flew a Type-6 before, so I figured I'd give it a try. Brought over Slave of the Empire so I could use her core modules in the Santa Vaca. ;)

To cut a long and annoying story short I did a few 532T runs and the best one was actually my highest PPS score despite the fact I lost the best part of a minute to an interdiction halfway through. Had the attempt finished only 38s faster it would have been good for the lead. So cookie need not worry about losing to this cat this time.

Yesterday I made my first run in the jury-rigged T6, first things first: it's been an absolute blast, mostly thanks to the thrusters and distributor borrowed from my Keelback. The poor "Albion Skunk" has never known the thrill and glory of racing fame, yet what allows it to just fly decently and be the trusty workhorse it's ever been has given a literal kick in the back to its lighter T6 sibling. Even Keelbacks deserve a bit of love from time to time.

Anyway, about that run: 800 seconds, 411.530 cr.
"No way, I can easily run it in under 13 minutes, there's ample room for improvement here!"

So this evening, after countless aborted attempts because of interdictions or abnormal jump times (but seriously, what happened with interdictions today? Almost impossible to get a clean run for me compared to previous days), I finally managed to get a second complete attempt:

800 seconds, 411.557 cr.

It's an improvement. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And that closed it for me. However you managed to get those absurd PPS up there in your T9's, you have my utmost respect! Old Betty gave all she had, if not at the wrong times apparently (server-time saturday afternoon profits seemed to be consistently higher than today). Still proud of her and her "cheap" 7D thrusters, she wasn't meant to see racing action ever, huge thanks to ElectricZ for making it happen. And for the hefty pileup of cash in my account also! It usually goes the other way round. [yesnod]

Welp, this afternoon was a bust, multiple interdictions, overshoots, and the perfect run... I forgot to push record. :p

I read I'm not the only one who suffered from that though, and it's good to have cookie company. :D

The ones that get away are always the worst.

I managed one more T9 run, which hopefully at least got me out of last place in the T9s. I need to get to bed, so unfortunately I've got to retire now with 40 minutes left (some races I've only just turned up at this stage!).

Great race again EZ, say hello to Bucky - and remind him we're all waiting for Buckyball XI! :D

I've just realised that I had an unused npc crew member leeching my PPS for the entire race...

Not enough to make much difference, but - Doh!

My Type-6 run, despite forgetting to set my pips to full engines, almost forgetting to pick up an outbound load, and one lithobraking incident, still managed to beat my best Type-7 time. Not bad for a ship I was completely unfamiliar with. She's a nimble little ship in Supercruise.

My attempts to improve my entry in the Type-7 races weren't very successful. One run was 30 seconds slower, and about 12000 credits less profitable, than my best time. Two runs were aborted due to interdiction attempts. And last, but certainly least, one run was aborted because I selected "enter hanger" instead of "launch."

I look forward to seeing the final board. Thanks for the race, ElectricZ!

A Buckyball Race were you earn money. Certainly a new twist. ;)

Are submissions closed? I thought there would be a few more hours to submit runs done before the deadline.

Race ended 00:00 24 April Galactic/Game time... But I saw your email about your most profitable run, and rest assured I'll factor it in to the final figures. :)

Sorry for the delay on posting the final update - I'd just put together the final leaderboard when I got interdicted by work. Production issues on a Sunday night... gotta love it!

The preliminary scoreboard is up in the first post - I'll have the final writeup and some stats for ya this evening or tomorrow AM, promise! Plus, a bunch of associated data about the race. There's always some truly interesting stuff that can be learned from this.

Thanks everybody who came out to play! Who knew? Cow racing is a lot of fun! :)

"All good things must come to an end."
--CMDR Chaucer

So the cows have finally come home, and everyone made it back safely to the barn - even if there was a last-minute rush at the end to be first through the gate.

In the Nines, long-time Buckyballer Raiko got in a couple runs under the wire in the Baymax for an eighth-place finish, and CMDR Aken B. flung the Graceful Betty through the slot one last time for a shot at the top, managing fourth place in the final analysis. CMDR Furrycat's Purple Paw had the winning time on the clock by a fair margin, but he was unable to capitalize on the commodity board. Maybe it was destiny, maybe it was fate, but CMDR Cookiehole's Big Haul Like That ended the week on the tip-top of the Type-9 class and the Heavy Metal leaderboard. Bravo, CMDR Cookiehole!

But CMDR Aken B. wasn't done for the day. While he was unable to catch Cookie in the Nines, he poured on the gas in the Sevens, bringing the Holy Cow in for the win and a solid first-place finish. O7, Aken! That was some mighty fine flying there.

Finally, in the Sixes, we had a trio of last-minute attempts at the title. CMDR Inga Stevenson commissioned the brand new Santa Vaca, and in spite of a planetary impact, an unexpected repair bill and an one blank cargo manifest managed a 7th place finish in the Sixes. CMDR Polly made a gallant push in the Volantem Laterem at the end to come in third, and once again CMDR Aken B. swooped in at the end to try and clinch another first-place finish in the And Yet It Flies.

But try as Aken might, a profit differential of only .38 credits/second kept him from first place. That's a heartbreaker. Aken had the profit, but not the time, with 6K in profit margin but lacking 12 seconds on the clock. CMDR Samwell Drakhyr, the systems of the Deep Blue Yondercorrupted with a suspicious infestation of Cookiebots managed to fend off all comers the past two days to retain the top slot for the Type-6's. Good try, Aken, and great run CMDR Drakhyr! Congratulations!

These results are preliminary, pending peer review. All race records will be made public, and competitors will have until midnight GST 25 APR 3303 to challenge the findings. In the mean time, let's head on down to the Heat Sink Pub on Treschov Ring, knock back a few drinks, and we'll all try and figure out what this means!

Here's the o-fficial race spreadsheet, complete with links to everyone's races. If anyone has any questions, speak before End of Day Monday, and forever hold your peace. And if you find I've made a mistake, well, you can just start holding your peace now. :p

Some Heavy Metal factoids:

Total Runs by Ship Type:
Lakon Type-6: 16, 23.9%
Lakon Type-7: 16, 23.9%
Lakon Type-9: 35, 52.2%

Racing T-9's was the favorite by far. You people are nuts.

Game Mode:
Open: 60, for 89.6%
Solo/Private: 7, for 10.4%

Buckyballers roll overwhelmingly in open.

Highest Profit (All Runs):
Type-9, CMDR Inodoro Pereyra, Very Hot Box, 1972345cr
Type-7: CMDR Inga Stevenson, Deposit, 1050772cr
Type-6: CMDR Inga Stevenson, Santa Vaca, 414594cr

(Special Mention for CMDR Jak in the Scow-ling Enigma, with a profit of 1452494 selling illegal nerve gas. Initially, this looked like it might be a race-breaking tactic had it not violated The Rules, but whether or not the added time of landing on a planet would have negated the additional profit is not known.)

Best Time (All Entries):
Type-6, CMDR Samwell Drakhyr, Deep Blue Yonder, 13m 03s.
Type 7: CMDR Aken B., Holy Cow, 13m 56s

Total Profit reported: 71,454,147cr. Make your kickback donation checks out to CMDR ElectricZ, Bank of Zaonce. ;)

Thanks everybody for coming out to play. Stay tuned tomorrow for the official declaration of the winners!

What, I managed to hang on to top T6? WOOHOO! :D
(not to mention "phew!" given the size of the winning margin!)

One small correction: Deep Blue Yonder's cargo capacity was only 104, not 112.

Thanks for hosting ElectricZ, it was an interestingly different race, great fun to get a chance to race the T6, and your commentary was as entertaining as always :)

Brilliant race EZ, thanks a million for hosting ... it actually really helped me over a bit of an ED wobble following the 2.3 launch. I guess it was the bugs but I was a bit downhearted ... right up to the moment I completed my first T6 run and was reminded how much bloody fun this game is, how much I still had to learn, and what a great community surrounds this game outside of the forum complaint threads.

Congrat's to the winners and yeah, congrat's to the losers ... 'cos there are no losers in Buckyball right? just racers.

Oh and of course ...

Ditto ... I can't even remember her name, some free-loader I felt sorry for because she'd competed in the Mischief Mile. Been on my pay role for months, don't even know where she is at the moment. I may have to let her go if she doesn't start pulling her weight soon.

Great race EZ thanks for organising. It was nice to get back in the T9 and reminisce about my early bulk smuggling days, before long range missions were a thing.

Can't believe how much I have slipped down the rankings :(

Was hoping to manage another run yesterday but was exhausted after a day of 4 wheel buckyball like activities in RL - in which I faired similarly poorly lol.

I must confess that I still haven't memorized the landing pad positions so I tend to take whatever I'm assigned but I'm curious, did anyone who does know their pads favour those at the back of the station for this race (I say this having just watched a Darkfyre video that illustrates the classic overshoot and swing back around manoeuvre commonly associated with the Lakon traders).

Also ... now it's all over, what was everyone trading? I took Palladium and/or gold from Banpityas on both outbound runs, returning to Marshburn with Mineral Extractors on the first return journey and with Crop Harvesters to Treshchov on the 2nd return.
