#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

There is currently no easy way for us to request features and support that will benefit the community as a whole, and there is often no warning from Frontier when a game update will alter or break existing APIs that we rely on.

May I ask if these APIs are supposed to be public, or have you reverse-engineered them?

While I fully support FD supporting third party apps and whatnots as much as possible, and the third party sites provide very valuable services (of which i use several), I cannot support this action.

This is basically trying to hold the devs to ransom. As a dev i would not negotiate with people under such conditions.

I understand you must have frustrations at times, but right now is not the time to escalate this. We are still in the period after a major patch with some major issues still outstanding. When the dust settles, by all means, push, but not like this.

I don't see it as a ransom demand .... it's a cry for help. Timing may not be right, but it doesn't read as hostile, at least.

FDev neglecting the community?

Again?

Colour me unshocked and unsurprised. I also expect them to ignore this strike, which is conveniently timed to stop people using EDDB to help with the new round of CG's, and stops people from using Coriolis to try out ship designs, or use Inara to keep track of things and have more Roleplay, or use EDSM to look things up.

FDev have shown time and again they don't actually care. All they ever give is "we'll look into it", "it's on our radar", "Soon, but not now", or our favourite: "There are no current plans for this". I can guarantee you all, they will respond in one of those four ways and that is an embarrassment. The reliance on these tools is enormous, and for some is the only reason they continue to play past FD's in-capabilities. I hope for and expect an angry backlash to this. Just make sure it's directed at FD.

Back to my spreadsheets then...

It's not that I don't support the 3rd party tool and devs, I do those guys/gals are bloody awesome, I just don't see this ending well tbh.

Hope I'm wrong and FD engage more with you.

Whilst I agree there should be more support for 3rd party tools, this reminds me of all the train strikes in the UK; they don't affect the companies but it screws all their customers (or in this case users).

Great timing whilst we don't necessarily have a stable game at the moment...

I for one am absolutely useless and cant do a damn thing without alt tabbing in elite dangerous. Im sure a majority agree that the existence of these third party resources make the game actually playable.

Just want to say I fully support you guys and thanks for the fantastic work you do.

I use Coriolis EDCD, EDDB and INARA on an almost daily basis, and my experience of the game is MUCH richer as a result. Without these fantastic tools the game would be incredibly frustrating and you're providing an invaluable service to the community and to FD by enhancing the game. I hope your actions act as a prompt to FD to realise the value you are providing them for nothing and that they will go on to support you fully.

Have you thought that how you feel now might be how the 3rd party devs feel a lot of the time? A few days of down time might result in something that stops many of them moving away from ED. If not, you've a taster of what might be to come.

I think you'd be better off providing feedback to Frontier, for not giving you the information you want in the first place, and for alienating the people who do.

3rd party s

WHAT DO I DO NOW?! WHAT DO I DO NOW?!
/runs around screaming........
I literally don't know what to do without eddb..... QQ I.... have no idea how to find what I need.... halp!
Someone help QQ

Sorry to hear about this. I use a number of these sites very often, and really appreciate the work and time that goes in to keeping them up and running. I think Frontier could take a huge burden off themselves by going all in and supporting third party sites like these - it's obvious that a lot of the in-game/star map tools need more detail and options. Why not allow these already existing sites to do that (they are anyway!) with proper support. Makes sense to me :)

In an ideal world I think having an in-game browser that supported things like EDDB, INARA, and ED Shipyard would be superb (perhaps the one thing they could take from EvE haha). Especially for those Hutton runs (I have yet to experience the distilled joy fo a Hutton run.. the rumours are enough..)

Father of 3 with a full time job. These tools help me enjoy the game. The grind is real and without these tools the time it would take would be unfathomable to progress in the game.

It's clear the 3rd party tool community puts in hours of their personal time to provide services fdev should have in game.

Thank you 3rd party devs for all the hard work.

Fdev: Give these guys support or put them on the payroll. It's really that simple.

I'm just going to say that the timing of this is obvious, and to be honest, very childish. It is, at best, wasting the time and effort of the playerbase in the event. FDev didnt have to do anything for 3rd party developers at all.

As one of the Admirals coordinating the defense, you've now made my life a living hell, and I will not support 3rd party developers from this point forward.

With me, all this has accomplished is a personal boycott of sites that I once considered useful.

Had you done so at a time where it was less vital to Drew Wagar and more respectful to the amount of time and effort that people who aren't getting paid at all (like myself and literally more than a thousand others) I would be more supportive.

Responses like these are why we're in such a bad spot. People like you utterly refuse to understand how bad the situation is. FD are doing barebones in every department now, and people like you continue to be happy about it. Unreal.

Inara is much more than data collection with multiple active Groups some of which may be gathering for the Premonition Event on Sat the 29th. While I understand your concerns you may reap the anger of many even if you succeed somewhat in your goals.

Premonition Event

Nope....I wont suppoprt 3rd Party like this...

I cannot support this argument.

3rd party sites are just that.. 3rd party. FD never asked you all to make them, you took that upon yourself, and then expect a discrete entity to support your efforts with some psudo strike. Im not at FD, im at all you 3rd party holyer than thou deverlopers.

Childish and immature effort to garner symnpathy... you just lost some.

I whole heartly support this protest. Nice to see people actually doing something to hold peoples feet to the fire in a constructive way offering valid criticism and not just cussing on reddit. I hope you are able to open a better dialog with the devs and hopefully see a positive resolution :D

This said however, I think the timing of your protest is a bit a poor, the 29th event is right on top of us. A lot of hard work has gone into planning the event for everyone to enjoy and i would imagine a fair number of groups use your tools for their planning. It kinda feels like you are using the 29th event to get your point across, which i understand (in order for a protest to be effective it must inconvenience), but the people you are trying to get to listen to you i doubt are the same people that control the area you are effecting.

Would have loved to see this happen around a patch day which would solely effect devs and not during what has largely been a community planned event.

Thats my 2 cents, I hope you get better channels opened up with the devs and are able to continue the amazing work you have done already :D

100% support for you in this!

Frontier...be ashamed, be very ashamed!

*cough* Btw while I'm here, does anyone know where I can find some Cadmium near Sol? On second thoughts, 'Engineers' appear to have taken a big one up the ar....are not working at present, so never mind!

Friends of Frontier.

I beg you on my behalf and on behalf of many other ED players to provide the attention and support needed by the application developer community that enrich the game and enable and enhance our enjoyment of the game.

I fully subscribe to the demands and requests that have been made to make possible the existence, maintenance and development of all those applications that have become essential to enjoy the maximum level of this fantastic game.

We all hope, for the good of all, that you understand the importance of this matter.

Best regards.

Fer what its worth, considering I dont even know what those sites are for let alone use any of them, I hope this little protest works. If nothing else, it might finally provoke a reaction out of them and shed some light on what has become the standard FD approach of merely ignoring everyone.
