#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

I'm sure you all figure something out that works well for all parties involved, give what you can and take what you need is my motto :)

This is not what is in OP, it is about lack of communication as far as I understand it. Re-read history in OP please ...

So they just want to talk to FD? Oh, right. No problem then. Hell, i offer to do that for free if they want.

But that can't be all. Because if its just someone to talk to, then what do all those in support of this action think they are supporting?

At the very least they want openness, documentation, and an ear to channel their wishlist into.... and if they wouldn't like more, it wouldn't surprise me, because i'd also want more. I'd want a dev on tap who would implement my pet changes, who will open up the API to feed me whatever i want so my app will work better.

For whatever reason this couln't have come at a worst time. In a few days Drew Wagar's event will draw 1000's of players who might ned a enginering job. Or something like that.
This is not gonna hurt FD but it will hurt our player base! Especially for the 29th!
I know atleast a 1000 players who will protect the 4 VIPS. And thats only one group. There are others, protectors an killers who can not use the information needed to "git gud"

For now i will NOT support this "strike"
For now i will say, think of your users who need it in the game. Now more than ever!

I #support3rdparty

We need these tools because the info isn't available in-game in a manageable manner
Please give them the support and time they need to make this game all it can be

As a developer myself (although my only contribution to Elite is the HUD color editor, which is not offline but surely also not in any way critical to anyone's gameplay) some thoughts:

1) These developers (like myself) have spent their own time and resources on the tools and sites. Hosting popular sites is not free, either, and I don't recall seeing ads or other monetisation on the sites that I've used. They can take their own sites offline whenever they choose, no-one has any "right" or entitlement to demand that these free tools remain available, no matter what the timing or how it affects whatever they had planned.

2) If the community around the game has come to rely so much on third-party tools that it causes this much of an outcry to lose them for a few days, perhaps there is something wrong with either the game or the way people play it? If the developers of the game feel that third-party tools add value to the game by allowing them to focus on developing other things instead of duplicating those tools, then they should seek to maintain a better relationship with third-party developers who are effectively working for them for free. Or if the developers feel that the tools are not the intended way to play the game, then it should be up to the community to either accept that view and stop using the tools, or convince the developers otherwise.

You entirely miss the point.

The game is playable without these tools. But it's a slog.
I disagree.

I still support 3rd party, but I disagree with your statement, the only main difference is that in game tools require you to search and find on your own, something that aligned with my expectations, if I want to find something, I have to search for it.
However clearly many see 'search for it' as 'get told where it is', which yeah, is a mentality within gaming culture.

Tools are fantastic Frontier not so

Come on frontier support these guys they do it for nothing unlike you, they make the game better -just give them the support they ask for
No point really playing game while the tools are down - real shame frontier seem to be a lot of mess ups lately maybe time for some refresh in your approach and management

I just recently started to use eddiscovery and it has become invaluable to me. I don't want to miss it. If those who make those apps struggle that hard to keep up with FD, I can only support their movement.

Third Parties Off-Line eh? Good thing I have my entire sector of the galaxy memorized down to the landing pads. Now if I can just find those phone numbers for my wing-mates in Britain for a conference call.. . . .

Yeah I don't think this was the way to go about it. It certainly makes the 3rd party people look bad.
Then again, When FD makes it harder on 3rd party toolers to cope with changes, they also look bad... No gain or loss there, apparently they feel cornered and that's why I support them. Without 3rd party tooling, no ED

So, you are something exceptional, could you stop saying this all the time? All we are aware of this fact, but may I remind you, that exceptional people are less than 1% of population? You wouldn’t be able to play this game without our money, money given by ordinary people, so have some mercy…

*scratches head* All the time? I said it once.

Whose exceptional? We banged our heads against the lack of in-game tools and it was frustrating at times. And when the tools came online, many of us were over the moon. I use several tools myself.

As i said earlier, i fully support FD being more open, expanding the API as and when they can, helping the 3rd party guys as and when they can, and the 3rd party stuff is really useful.

What i don't support is how they have chosen to go about it.

So unfair this... Would you at least acknowledge that 3rd part tooling is needed to enjoy the game more

No

and acknowledge that although FD gets paid for the game, they are all volunteers?

No

And could you not acknowledge thet volunteering has boundaries??

Yes

Well, the 3rd party toolers believe FD has crossed their line of tolerance and ask our support

Their own defined line, at a time when they know it will have the most perceived impact.

It isn't though. I happily get along just fine with out it and I'm a multi billionaire and made all those credits with out 3rd party tools. The only 3rd party tool I use is Inara to look up engineer mats. Though I decided to just make a cheat sheet today which makes taking the time to look them up unnecessary and obsolete. It takes less time to look to my right than to minimize the game open the browser go to the website.

Again I hope they get support but cut the crap with 3rd party tools being necessary or "half the game" posts.

I personally wouldn't have put more than 15-20 hours into this game witbout eddb, and I'm currently at 850. The first time I wanted a module and couldn't get it from the station I was at, or any station within a jump or two without scouring every g one of them for a 100ly radius would have been the end for me. I have better things to do with my time. If the developers don't want to include this option in-game, and there are those willing to do it for them outside the game, this seems like a win for everyone to me.
