#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

"I dont need 3rd party sites", "I use them here and there", "It is your choice to make them, FDev is not making you"...

All valid points but lets be honest what would happen if this goes beyond 30th...

eddb - 404 error
coriolis - 404 error
exploration tools - stop being updated
other tools - stop being updated
other sites - 404 error

It would be fine for few days but then... Who is that dude who gives G5 something and how to unlock him BTW, where can I get X commodity, where to get discounted stuff, permit?!!!!?, and 10000 other queries here on the forums.

Nightmare for newer players. Veterans remember (mostly thanks to the tools) where to get most of the stuff but still... As 3rd party web\tools went away you would also feel it. One way or another because 99% of people here use them. If for nothing else then to check how to farm trade CGs most efficiently.

ED InGame is severely lacking in information 3rd offer unless you want to sol <> barnards star with computer components and animal machinery. They are time savers (ppl constantly complaining about grind, imagine without 3rd), galactic mapping is just too good, travel history, etc, etc...

I hope they get some love from FDev. It is well deserved and is keeping ED accessible for everybody. If you dont wanna use them then dont but again, everybody is using them. If nothing, 1 website.

wow the agony that people will have to learn to play the game rather than be led around by the hand like a guided tour

@FD: I use two of these sites an a daily basis and their being down strongly affects my gameplay.

I understand they were not in the original plan, but please consider their request as directly tied to gameplay for what I have to imagine is the majority of your player base.

You have my deep, deep thanks and appreciation for all you have done for us so far: if what they are asking for is at all possible, please help them out!

I fully support the third party Devs , Frontier really needs to wake up or they are going to be losing players. Because we as Elite players count on the information we get from these apps, without them we are literally flying blind . :(

WEll it's you and you always make nonsensical posts.

Yes, yes of course that's the ONLY desire here. Ok you don't understand the OP which you didn't even read. When you get it come back and maybe we can have a relevant conversation bout the actual topic rather than the fantasy you're creating in your head?

Really - I'm getting fed up with people who think they can weigh in on a subject they know nothing about. How does that move anything forward?

Ridiculous. You hope to just throw nonsensical assumptions in order to dismiss my opinion. This tactic does not go unnoticed.

What proof can you summon to demonstrate if I read the OP or not? You just don't like what I've written, so you try to minimize it with derision. It's a common enough tactic on the interweb. I am certain I know more than enough about E|D to discuss the OP. If you don't, prove me wrong.

You shutting down the sites turn these suggestions into demands. The fact you can't just admit it just make you two fact about it. Which reminds me very much how trade unions act.

Oh those horrible trade unions that defend workers from unscrupulous practices by employers. You remember those paid holidays you took? Fought for and won by trade unions. The right to a safe work place, fought for and won by... TRADE UNIONS!
The audacity of people running around protecting the right's of workers. Let's all just go back to shoving kids down mines. 😒

This is correct. The 29th being organised by me and lots of other community members, it is thus a community event. FDev have helped at various levels, but it is not run by them.

Cheers,

Drew.

I wholeheartedly support all you're doing Drew, as I do the 3rd party developers.

But here's a thing, would it be fair to say, that to achieve this milestone, in ED's history, the 3 rd party tools are/have been, invaluable?

Would it also be fair to say, that FDev will reap the benefits of this milestone? A historic number of online players etc, chasing your characters around the bubble?

Let's be honest here, these tools are of benefit to a huge number of players, and event organisers like yourself, yet, FDev ignore them and claim all the kudos..

The services provided by many third party tools should be part of the game to begin with.

I feel for your situation OP but the problem you've listed is not the one you should be trying to resolve, and is largely self-made to begin with.
Instead of getting FD to just talk to you more, or whatever your goal beyond this dependency-related show of power is, you should be using this opportunity to force them to make all this information accessible in-game. That is assuming it's your goal to make game info readily available to the players, and not just getting some more middleman ad revenue or an inflated e-peen.

I don't use any third party sites and I really should not have to. But I'm at a disadvantage when it comes to a number of in-game activities because of this, mostly when it comes to finding things. I want FD to sort out that discrepancy before they go pandering to yet another group of people who are doing their jobs for them. The kind of power the OP wields to disrupt the playerbase and grab the devs by the collar just by throwing a tantrum should never have been made available to them in the first place. That's on FD for letting the situation get that out of hand, and is now up to them to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Make third party tools into first party features or this will only happen again next time someone gets ideas above their station. Don't say I didn't warn you.

The way i see it is that the API works (barring bugs introduced via patches which FD fix), and its basically these guys have got together and said "We want more, FD aren't giving, let's have a wobbly over it"

Yeah, well, i want more. I want more exploration features, i want better in-game tools, i want some changes to how PvE piracy works, i want, I WANT, I WANT..... but FD are not going to give me what I want just because i stamp my feet over it.

As much as I love the guys who make these tools, they are acting like prima-donnas here.

They can damn well get in line with the rest of us who WANT things.

WOW that's a new level of low....

So the guys that work hard to do something with little to none profit to make everyone game better cant go on a strike cause every minimal upgrade that will cost them days to work out bugs and problems EVERY patch , comes out of the closet and say " we need more intel, we need more support from frontier". I get that you are a little too much egocentric... already said it before on your egocentric post about "dark mind o a PvE person"... BUT really? prima-donnas ? So you work your butt for days , weeks , months.... pay to put a site online (not much really)... and when you come and ask/demand for help to keep it bug free (hahahahahahahahahaha) you get to see this kind of post?

I'm glad that you are part of the 0,0000001% that are angry about this kind of stuff.

I'm terrified that you still a mod with this kind of Bias...

ADD:
Also they re free to do whatever they want about their stuff, if they want to scrap it and never put anything online they are free to.

So it's a question o WHO have more to lose. they, who do it for NO profit.
or FDev when 80% of the people who play elite uses at least 2 or 3 sites/apps in daily basis. Do I would be interested in playing elite without the EDDB / Coriolis/ ETDN / EDdyscovery ? heck no... After seeing such an incredible tools done by the Community developers i don't think I'm ready to come back into the game without their support!

The game is dry bones in intelligence information.

I'll just repeat what I said on Reddit, and I hope FD gets how important this is.

It will suck to play without these available, and I'm behind you 100%. I've written a lot of tools in my professional capacity and dealt with plenty of crappy/incomplete/poorly documented APIs, so I feel your pain.

I can't even conceive of participating in something like a trade CG without EDDB. am I supposed to do, fly to every station in a 200LY radius until I find one that carries left-handed monkey wrenches, jade toilet seats, or Eritrian yak dildos to bring to the CG station?

Sadly I was going to start playing again this weekend after a long break - I guess that break will be getting longer....
Come on Frontier, get helping!

I understand why you took the websites down OP, and as far as I can judge you are right in doing so. Keep up* the good work [up]
*no pun intended

Also; nobody has a right to complain about it since the game itself is fully intact. If you feel the game is broken, then remember that the third party tools take a lot of work to create and to maintain (and thus it is reasonable for them to ask for some corporation).

I feel a disturbance in force... as if 1,000,000 Sat-Nav's were all unaccessible.....

While these 3rd Party 'add-ons' to the game make Elite as simple as all other games™ to placate the attention span of the modern gamer, and yes, they are very useful if you can't be bothered to do any research (as you had too in all previous versions of the game) at the end of the Day these 'mods' are 3rd Party no-one (to my knowledge) asked for them. Individuals have taken it upon themselves to 'hack' into a game and create something additional to the game.

While I do agree, in part, that the latest incarnation of Elite should have included some kind of limited trading oojamaflip, along with a gadget for planning your next build/ship etc etc. I don't think that we should be able to just scan the whole galaxy for the best trade routes. If you're honest with yourselves, all these trade calculators really are, are minor exploits so that you never make a loss while transporting goods.

To those of you that are now lost in the Galaxy, or now feel that the game is unplayable - Reach for your pen & paper. Now you too can emulate the original players of the game ;)

While it is a shame that the support for 3rd party addons seems to fluctuate over time. It seems to be an issue that other 3rd party mod devs also have (World of tanks is a prime example. after each update the game is vanilla for several Days until they fix their code - but conversely that game is in my opinion far better while the mods are inactive).

What is required is for the FDevs to make a statement, one way or the other, and make their opinion clear as to whether they will support these 'tools' that a lot of the community appear to rely on.

I wouldn't be surprised of they are finally making/updating their own decent working trade companion which would ultimately make this whole conversation moot.

Sorry, but I don't condone strikes of any kind. Update your site's or don't. You have found people that now rely on you and have withdrawn your support (for your stated reasons). Does that make you better or worse than the FDevs that you are complaining about?

I ultimately always rely on my own info, and have my own working spreadsheet. In other words "I'm alright jack". do whatever you want I'll still keep playing

While I wish you luck, although I think you could have found a better way of trying to obtain your goals.

I support some of this statement, many tools are very expansive. A lot of time has gone into them. However also tools as powerful as they are are in my opninion neccessary, or at least not overstepping bounds.

It's not as simple as "just do it the old way" anymore. It's not 1984. We all have a lot more to do than just work and play the Sinclair or the Micro. I am very happy with the buying the game, certainly. I am very happy about hoping for further development cycles. But with the time I have and the rate I'm going, without the tools I wouldn't have bought 2.0 and won't by 3.0.

These tools are Fdev's money. They keep people playing.
Original vision or not, as a company a developer caters to the community or dies. Sales and engagement matter. If the overall consensus is felt to wind up being "these tools don't matter" then sure. That is how things might play out. How it was, and how it should be can and usually be very different things, though. Whether it was slow, or should be is a question, not a fact. Each side arguing with each other is that very determination.

Modding Skyrim takes less time and reboots than this game. That's not necessary a bad thing for some players, sure. But at a point with many players access to their set ups, it becomes utterly untenable.

Dark souls work because you can load in, die, die, die again and still make some kind of progress. You learn what not to do, you earn some measure of an item or manage to cash points in somewhere, for a short session. It's "speed" is a different level of a barrier.

Frontier take every opportunity to kill money. With all the tools available and more time than I put into several of other games combined, I am still not in end game levels of progress. I'm ok with this speed. Any slower, and I'd likely refund it via Steam when they add that functionality because it's on its way.

Fully support the 3rd party developers in this. When actively playing ED, I use many of these tools almost constantly in order to make the game actually playable!
I need to track my ship builds, I need to calculate my Engineer mats requirements, I need to theorise upon power unit usage etc, if trading I need the 3rd party tools to find available commodities & rough pricing, I also use Inara like many to keep track of my bank & fleet & much more. When I go exploring I use Captains Log & EDDiscovery to enhance the otherwise completely tedious activity (without these I'd never bother leaving the bubble). In fact for every hour of gameplay I probably spend 20-25 minutes using a tool from one of these fine guys to make the experience tolerable.

The thought of ED without these tools? I'd simply uninstall it, to be perfectly honest. I've always been a "stats geek" in most games I play, and these guys provide that facility & much more.

The fact that FD don't liaise with these 3rd party developers on a formal basis doesn't surprise me tbh, it's another example of half baked organisation that I've come to expect.
However, I think this 3 day "strike" is a great way to maybe open the eyes of Fdev as to just how many people use these sites & tools & how often we rely on them. The fact this it's taking this strike to make them aware is saddening in itself, if they ignore it, that would probably be truly damning for the game's future.

The third party tools fill many holes in the game. They are vital for my enjoment of the game. Frontier really should communicate with all of the 3rd party tool developers. They make the game a lot more playable. Respect where respect is due.
