#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Oh please. If FDEV had done a better job in giving players the tools they need these sites woudn't even be necessary. Blame FDEV.

Now, now, plenty of blame to go around.
FDev for not including the information in-game to begin with. Third party devs for abusing their trusted position in order to get what they want (which seems to be an even more trusted position to abuse). FDev for immediately kowtowing to the clearly untrustworthy third parties rather than working to resolve the core issue of lacking in-game information. Would have been slightly more work than folding like a christmas card but would have simultaneously improved the game and pulled the rug out from the opportunists picking up their slack.
And finally there's a little bit of blame left over for the community at large for blindly supporting this for all the wrong reasons.

Wow, I'll atleast say I'm surprised this has been "seen to" at the very least within the day.

Most important thing now is that the entire situation IMRPOVES for EVERYONE.

Player, 3p Dev, and game dev a piece.

After speaking in private with the OP and other involved community developers, we have all agreed that it was best for the community to bring the websites back up as soon possible. This will be happening simultaneously at 19:00 UTC (where possible) for all the sites.

We have made a commitment to work more closely with the third party developer community to address concerns and support these features which the community use and value on a daily basis.

These ongoing communications will include developers from other third party websites who may be interested, not just those listed in the OP. If you are an active and established third party Elite Dangerous developer, get in touch with community@frontier.co.uk

We all hope that clears things up!

Thanks everyone,

Ed

Cool. Hope it all pans out ok.

I'm not a big user of 3rd party stuff myself, besides Coriolis. That said, I've played with enough folks to realize how important some of these sites are, such as INARA when it comes to community events and the like. I'm glad Frontier and the 3rd Party Devs have been able to reach an agreement that benefits not just the game, but the community as well. Bottom line is, we're all in this together. Anything that makes the game more enjoyable (whether you use it or not), is a plus in my opinion, and deserves some respect.

There's a high degree of passion for Elite Dangerous, as evidenced within this thread. That's a good thing, even if it puts people at odds at times.

Pretty much agree, 'ShadowWolf Kell' but I have not bothered to read through this thread other than the original post, because 'passion' is subjective and can become toxic. I support the voices those who develop 3rd party apps, too want to be able to provide the 'best they can' but I also support Frontier's right to their own retain propriety code.

However the fact is that Frontier dont have to do anything, and I suspect that when they are developing 'Code' they are neither choosing to shut out 3rd party apps or keeping them in mind, rather they are working on the Game Code; simply put to run on a 'clean operating system to minimum specifications hardware'. Bug hunting that is hard enough.

No worries there then! No "software" under the plaid :)

(sorry, couldn't resist)

Did someone say Stellar Plaid?

And what if they do? They provide a free service to the community using their own resources. They spend hundreds of hours of their free time to a side-project that benefits the game and make it available on their servers and domains they payed for.
If any of these third-party developers think their free service is taking too much of their free time and isn't worth it anymore they are free to shut their service down at any time for a s long as they want.

I don't understand your point. I've never said they're not free to shut their sites down, they can do whatever they want with them, they own the ip of them. Taking them down and then encouraging the community to tell FD exactly what they think about that, I do have issue with.

Real question what will the 3rd Party Developers do when they get nothing from FDev on the letter? Can the 3PD on the OP list please state what your plans are if nothing comes from this?

Edit: Just caught up on the forums and I guess this post is pointless now as FDev did respond. Oh well would still like to know what the end game would have been but I guess we will never know.

At the proverbial 'end of the day' I'd love to see a cohesive API put out there for developers. The game would only benefit from it.

I'm with you, INARA, and since I'm here, FRONTIER, why do you not open some telemetry port for our simulator chairs lovers? (sim commanders, simtools, simdash, etc... )

Why not? I mean, other than creating a headache for you mods, why shouldn't someone leverage a community to drive an agenda if that community is willing to carry it for them? The community isn't some sacred body to be treated with some sort of senatorial decorum.

Frontier is willing to parlay with terrorists if they take their customers hostage.
Dangerous precedent.
:)

True non blurred-out minded appreciative customers would not be so daft to blame the 3rd party devs by allowing themselves to feel taken hostage by removal of their work --- in fact the opposite!

But, good for FD in their response. Their proverbial ball moves from the 1 to the 20 yard line with this move. I also noticed a pulse !
