#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

It creates more than a headache, it feeds on the animosity and anger that has been building up recently and exploits that. From the OP's perspective it makes perfect sense, that doesn't change the fact that I have an issue with it. People are free to agree or disagree with me as they wish.

That makes sense...how should they have handled it differently? Were all other avenues exhausted?

They clearly showed there is a lot of passionate support.

It is/was exactly extortion. One you couldn't have pulled off without inciting the forum/reddit posters. "Do our bidding, or lose our sires".

In the end, I want the association to be successful. I will however, remember your actions when I decide, or decide not to, donate to your sites again. It is the height of arrogance to use faithful followers to get your way. I would like to emphasize the word 'use', in the last sentence. Your group did 'use', it's consumers, in the worst possible definition of 'used'.

Wow! Terrorism, eh?

I missed the part when anyone was threatening violence against anybody, was anybody in risk of physical harm?

I am certainly terrified at the fact that there is a nonzero number of people on these here forums that seem to fundamentally misunderstand direct action and collective bargaining, so terrorism it is!

You can't donate you our program. We don't accept money.

After countless hours asking them for a little bit of help, i'm afraid the guys patience was exhausted. And we have tried and tried to engage. We don't actually want very much, just some advanced notice if they are going to change things, and a way of reporting bugs back which is not lost in QA.

So, the 'Ends justify the means' huh? This hasn't had a discussion, has it? I can't see 'using' your customer's voices to bully anyone, into agreeing with you. I have no trouble calling this action, and you, arrogant, and abusive. Your good will with the community will shield your group, but there is no difference here, that the Spicy Boy drama. Except that the players like the tools more than murder. Lucky you.

If the OP timeline is correct at least in general terms, what would be the appriopriate criminal description of how they got treated by FDEV? Which gruesome words would suitably describe those actions?

After speaking in private with the OP and other involved community developers, we have all agreed that it was best for the community to bring the websites back up as soon possible. This will be happening simultaneously at 19:00 UTC (where possible) for all the sites.

We have made a commitment to work more closely with the third party developer community to address concerns and support these features which the community use and value on a daily basis.

These ongoing communications will include developers from other third party websites who may be interested, not just those listed in the OP. If you are an active and established third party Elite Dangerous developer, get in touch with community@frontier.co.uk

We all hope that clears things up!

Thanks everyone,

Ed

I like what you did but it's sad that we as a community need to resort to this kind of action to get you guys moving.

lo, oh i hate the none logical way language works, should have googled the word.. 'played' just looked wrong to me. 'pl + aid' sounded right, but some how 'Pl+ aid' =pladd?

No problem - I guessed it was something like that but the feed line was just too good to pass up.

For the international audience, it's a reference to the fact that traditionally nothing is worn under the kilt... and the pronunciation quirk is because "plaid" isnt derived from the English language :)

This is me standing up at my desk, clapping, out loud, at work, and now people are looking at me funny... WOOHOO!

Very glad FDEV have reinforced their commitment to those who do the same work for free; THE PLAYERS. :)

Well done!

Today I learned that saying "I'm providing a service and hosting it on my own dime, the least you could do is not make me scramble every time you change something randomly because I'm getting burned out and will probably just quit if you keep making me waste my time" is both extortion and terrorism.
