#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

You're right of course, but what a *lot* of people in this thread either never realized or keep forgetting is that the 3PDs make these tools for the community and they *want you to have them*. They were willing to bring the sites back, in good faith, because they expect FD to keep their end of the bargain. That is a very reasonable/professional thing to do, and I applaud them for it.

They did this *for the community* not money or power or any kind of greed. This action only proves that point. If FD fails to keep their end of things, we know that one way or another these sites we enjoy so much will once again be in peril and there will likely be a negative outcome. For now that's idle speculation and I, for one, am willing to give FD the benefit of the doubt and give them a chance to work things out with the 3PDs.

No worries. You know exactly how to get FD's attention next time: "Extortion now, extortion for ever.'

Any way to get the third party guys to make something that would work INSIDE the game?
This may very well be a naive question.

That would require an entirely different level of FD support to do that - full APIs etc of their internal data and an API to display stuff. An order of magnitude more effort than a simple text journal or XML API.

Not disagreeing with you at all about 3rd party devs WANTING us to use the tools.

Just making the observation that FD has no reason to be trusted at this point. They just want Drew's event to happen without any other problems.

That's why PC/Mac's got two rushed patches this week, right?

Wow you jumped on that quick Ed, i deleted it 30secs after i posted it. Appologies i fell a kip writing it came too later and posted then realised you had in fact updated us, my bad.

Glad to hear you are all taking though and good to know that these sites are held important by frontier as well. Good decisions on working together to bring them back up.

I gave up on them weeks ago. Hell, I never would've noticed they were down if I hadn't read this thread. I only need them when my license ranks change. I'll have to check the Engineer page when they bother to re-open their site. Guess they're slow on that, too.

Not slow, 19:00 UTC is the right time... ;)

You have to appreciate that what you propose, is not at all what happened at all. A systematic scheme was undertaken to use our voices, to get them, the group included with the OP, to get the attention they wanted.

I'm betting, that if that group submitted the Post, without the extortion, they would have achieved their hands goals. But, their services being invaluable to the players, they decided to abuse our relationship, and use us to do their bidding.

I wish I could rep you for this but I can/t so pls take this post as rep

Actually if all the current 3rd parties quit today, within weeks new 3rd party sites would online with the same info.

Probably true, but if nothing changes how long would their patience last? Kicking the can down the road isn't a solution.

I would never have been able to work out and plan my engineering goals without the support of Inara.

Also Coriolis used to be my go to site for testing out builds prior to engineers, I haven't used it much recently because I didn't know you could import engineered ship builds direct from the game now. Time for a revisit there.

You have my support and I hope FD listen to what you have to say and improve their relationship with all third party devs.

none of this would have been a problem if it was possible to locate needed information in-game.

i mean, you cant even know how many module slots a ship has in the game's own shipyard. you gotta buy the ship and count them and sell the ship back at 10% loss if you dont like the layout. that is not even alpha-release levels of finished.

I would love to know what kind of guarantee they received that this wouldn't happen again.

The OP was pretty clear in his timeline about how FD constantly picked up and dropped the ball for months at a time.

There is no reason to believe that FD will keep up with communication AFTER Drew's event this weekend.

Look we know you have an issue with the event at the weekend, but can you stop shoehorning it into every post?

Actually unrealistic. The code written has taken 2 years to get to this point. You won't get that reproduced in 2 weeks. Want to wait another 2-3 years for the same level of stuff?

Perhaps to the same level, but to meet my basic requirements, I don't think it would take as long as it has in the first cut.

There is existing knowledge and the possibility of reverse engineering.

(as someone who has tasked engineers to reverse engineer old unsupported code)

It's always easier to recreate, than to establish systems.

No one is indispensable.

That was effective; 1400 replies in just a single afternoon (during working hours at that!). Hopefully that gives everyone a picture of just how heavily the ED community relies on these third parties.

All of the third party developers taking action today are valuable to the community but EDDB in particular is the one that I like to have open when running the game, I'm just glad that will be up again by the weekend!

So,

Thanks to FD for being sensible about the situation and recognising the importance of these volunteer developers.
Thanks to the 3rd party developers. Yours is largely a thankless task but the game is better for all of us as a direct result of your continued efforts.

Very well said sir. Still waiting for the OP to come and make a comment, rather than updating the first post with someone else's.

What more do you want? The OPost is a group post/action, it's their (the group's) official response. Should the OPoster ctrl+c ctrl+v so his forum name shows?

Did.. you just tell me to shut up and not post my thoughts on anything?

I genuinely want to know why it is the 3rd party guys think that this new era of communication is going to go longer than Drew's event.

Why can't I ask that in a thread that's about that?
