it sells

All of the Thargoids that you will eventually meet in the game will be female so I would imagine that every now and then they would have to kidnap one of us (hopefully me) so that they can reproduce.

Here is a piccy of what I imagine they would look like......

very nicely put. i completely follow you.

How about from an adult players perspective. Some players might love the game but not feel comfortable with certain aspect such as slavery for instance. Would providing filters for such content and game play be a good idea?

i'm pondering about the game setting or back drop and how rich we want it to be, mood, themes, motifs... it could be epic!

It's a game, chopping zombies up with a chainsaw is fine but slavery is bad? It all seems to me like trying to create a problem that doesn't exist.

You might be somewhat out of luck there... Not that I'm some sort of super-fan, but I'm pretty sure Lucy Lawless said Xena was gay. ;)

Personally, while I'd like to have more background on people's crimes and such, I don't see why Elite needs to be darker.

I first got into Elite when I was seven, I don't see why my space-obsessed daughters can't take the Cobra for a spin in a child friendly environment.

I would like to have the seedier trades kept in.
Drugs, slaves etc
What's the point of having a choice to play mr nice guy when you cant be bad ;)

Personally I'm all in favour of a dark, gritty, adult feel in certain systems, while there would be a complete contrast in more utopian systems.

I have an imagination though....so I don't need it shoved in my face

Bear in mind that the star wars films were for kids and they had stuff like slavery, genocide, organized crime etc...etc.. you can explore these themes without getting graphic.

Yup its a game.

oh no sir. i think you have got the wrong idea, im not trying to make a problem.

it's aspects of the game that i find interesting such as mood, content, setting, story development and how they are handled. Somethings are considered as poor taste

I sont think i mentioned chopping up anything so cant quite answer that point directly. However destroying the mindless and soulless living dead is probably fine compared to the mass enslavement of individuals for the benefit of a fictional empire.

Thats at a complete tangent though.

I'm not saying whats right or wrong. it's not my place.

i'm interested in the game setting and just how 'real' it will be or perhaps how darkly cyber an anarchic system will be compared to a high science fiction imperial slavery supporting system and if the players activities will influence the back drop and how matters of good taste will be handled.

You can see great examples in tales like to blade runner, district 9, soilent green and games like deus ex. But if you'd rather not... tgat's fine

I'm aware that this is a serious suggestion and will give a serious, considered reply.

I don't believe FD should do anything other than what they're already doing. I assume game ratings are done in a broadly similar way to movie ratings and somebody else decides how it should be rated; but even if it's not I'd be amazed if they don't already have a pretty clear idea what their target market is, and even more amazed if they decide to add content that wouldn't otherwise be there just for the sake of a rating.

TL;DR - don't mess with it.

But would then be presented with an in-game moral choice: do they go bounty hunting for slavers to express their disapproval? I would like to see that followed through in the game design with an option to "Free Slaves" when you are in a station. Maybe if you do that then you become eligible for missions from an anti-slavery league.

Thanks Andy. is there some where we can find out more? im not really aware of the treatment of the story and content aspects and how they are being developed. Most of the forum discussion has been around the flight and trade mechanics and id love to know more about the stage, content and how much influence player actions will have on their environment beyond market prices shifting. What is FD doing around this part of the game?

Christ mate, that is a bit off colour. Your wife(?) looks a little young to have been involved in the WW2 situation. So I'm assuming you are not serious. Does she not mind you plastering her photo onto random internet forums with the words "Imperial Sex Slave" written above?

Considering Japan's use of ACTUAL Imperial Sex Slaves across Asia in that conflict is still a sore topic in many countries I'd have hoped for a little more tact and consideration.

(I also live and work in Japan and love the country and it's people fwiw)

True sorry if I offended.. It was just a joke with the sex slave thing. As I like the Empire in the ELITE universe and slaves being legal there. I did not think about what I was actually saying. I was tired and half drunk tired after a long day at work.

I also love Japan and its people I travel there when I can. The girl is Naoko my girlfriend, maybe soon to be fiance if all goes well. She won't mind that picture being online as its only her face and me with her.

So I'm sorry if my childish comment caused offense.

I'm all for it, as long as it's amount is similar to the one used in games like GTA - quite a bit of adult content, but only as much as the real world got. For Elite, you'd have to restrain from going for all the silliness that GTA has, of course.
And yes, I think it will sell. I still remember how "cool" everyone thought the use of drugs in Gothic I was.

No offense taken personally. Just thought it was a bit of an (understandably) sensitive issue for a lot of people and a bit of a crude joke. Good for you on clearing it up, and good luck with the proposal to Naoko!

I don't think there really is much of a debate on this topic. All the horse**** that filters in the Medea today blows my mind. From MTVs The Jersey ***** to Molly Rays scrawny naked ass !! Don't get me started on those dumbasses on vine!! The kids love this crap
Ok I will stop now.
My point is, I do not think that the devs would come up with anything that is not already pushed much farther in teen access content.
If they do come up with some mature content, then it should be done in a manor that appeals to mature players. Not mature content that target the immature... Example: grand theft auto

What would an example of something that does appeal?

Just make it dark like Blade Runner, make it hard like DSC A-10 and fun like the old SW saga. Then I'm a happy camper.

I don't think a bit more darkness and adult content would hurt the game.
If done in a tasteful way.
I mean, there's already loads of violence, assassinations, slavery and other adult content in, but as it stands the game makes these things just seem like a regular day at work.
The way how the game trivialises really horrible acts is actually more disturbing than having them in a more serious and dark context.
