THE FORMIDINE RIFT MYSTERY (Part 4)

No faction =No base

No it doesn't - it just means we support some neutral NPC faction to run it for us as part of the CG. And by support I mean in the CG-only, not BGS (as has been mentioned it is far enough out there that the BGS should never come into play)

Ok, but you do realise you have said it's time to close the thread and stop searching for the rest of it.

No movement = no use and BGS

No faction =No base

I'm fine with that

Yes I know; Zurara has been found & that should be the end of the FRift thread; that mystery is solved. A new one should be started to take it forward and explore the perpetrators of the "Dynasty Conspiracy"

Edit: and how do we get the ship paintwork repaired and the canopy cleaned?? Maintenance don't do either even when paid to do so; my AspX needs a little love.

So we support a non existent faction to pop a static base somewhere which could be of no use to our future goals.

Well by we, I mean you, as while I'll wish you well with it, I already support an existing npc backwater faction in the bubble as my home and can't see how this adds anything to the H&S bases already out that way to give it a useful point to being.

So if we established our base out in the Rift, it'd be fine then.. Because there's nobody else there?

But wait, what about Canonn? They're getting a mobile megaship they can dock at. So, doesn't that count as a faction base in whatever system it's in?

Yep, always a risk as jacques has shown with a mobile base.

The best part about beinv a Rifter is that there's no right or wronv way to be one.

Just embrace the darkness, dive on in, and do your thing.

It depends on what "Rifter" is. Is it a description for somebody very interested in the Rift mystery or is it a name for a member of an organization?
Currently I consider "Rifter" as a description for somebody invested in solving the Rift mystery (and all follow up mysteries), a description used by others to describe a certain type of CMDR.
If a Rifter faction or organization is created that claims the name "Rifter", then it would transform the description into a name. Something that organization owns.

As for embracing the darkness, don't worry - the darkness is strong in me. I will stay interested in the rift mystery, but I won't become a member of an organization.
Organizations are to easily infiltrated, corrupted and their reputation easily destroyed. Organizations are vulnerable.

Powerful ideas don't need organizations.

Truth!
Freedom!
optional third battlecry!

I don't know about us vs them...

Us vs. them is the inevitable result of creating an organization. In the end it's the reason d'être for an organization. No amount of goodwill and good intentions can prevent this from happening. Humans are extremely tribalistic beings. Us vs. them is the core of human existence.

The Gnosis is Derthek's baby. …

Gnosis is such a wonderful and powerful name. Downright scary if I think about it. I need to keep an eye on Canonn, I don't trust anybody calling their flagship "Gnosis". Especially somebody claiming to have something to do with science.

(Sorry for that tinfoil conspiracy spasm.)
((Sorry for the traces of RP in this posting))

I agree and disagree.

I agree with your description of a Rifter, but I disagree that the creation of a faction would automatically take ownership of the name.
Look at CoR, by adopting that name they neither became children, nor Raxxlarian - and it doesn't change what I consider those things to be either.

That said, I'm totally not into organizations and hierarchies. There's a reason that I formed the Independent Rift Explorers Alliance - and then didn't let anyone else join :D

<Update>
Rep for 'optional third battlecry'.

Also, while I'm here, I'm going to give my 2p/2c worth on the Rifter decal and who is allowed to use it.

There's been a lot of talk about 'contribution' to the thread and the Rift mystery, but we should take a moment to remember that the ONLY meaningful contribution any of us made to solving things was googling Greek mythology to solve the riddle which gave the system name for Zurara.

We (Rifters) didn't find diddly - didn't even find the Teorge listening posts - so if we're talking about who 'deserves' the decal then the answer is either 'nobody' or 'anyone who wants to be associated with this debacle'.

Well... Those who spent hours trying to solve the former and more sophisticated greek mythology clues for months are already granted the most noble title of Martyrs of Formidine.

That's pretty close to something I wrote but deleted. I'm perfectly happy with the litmus test for 'rifter' to be simply stating you're a rifter. It's just a label we apply to ourselves so it does me no harm if somebody comes along, says hey this is cool, I'm a rifter too.

In my opinion we don't need a Rifter faction. We already exist as a player group and have managed to stay pretty active and cohesive without being a faction.

Factions control stations and systems ... We're talking about controlling a ship. Totally different dynamic.

On the subject of decals

Anyone know who made the original rifter badge? I started tinkering around with making a decal but don't want to use any part of their art without asking first (I'd like to include the masted ship). I also think whoever it was should be asked if they'd like to make the decal themselves.

Before I can finish I need to get out to the Zurara so I can take some screenshots. My idea is simple, masted rifter ship "sailing" in a field of stars with a silhouette of the zurara among them. I've been building a website as a part of a graduate thesis so haven't had much time to jump the 12,000ly out there though.

Is anyone else working on a decal themselves?

What happened to conflux, Hawkins gap?
Rift was one of three.

At least for myself, and I suspect others, I've fallen back into the pattern of:
  1. Make mental connection
  2. Rush off, poke around find nothing
  3. Decide it's red herring
  4. Repeat 1-3
  5. See real clue, madly try to deduce meaning
  6. Spot post which decodes/finds/de-mystifies clue
  7. Hang head, Fly out to thing, honk
  8. Drink beer, if 7 and 2 are the same place drink lots of beer.
  9. Repeat at 1

I finished 8 over the weekend, I'm currently transiting from 9 to 1, and in the context of Conflux/Hawkins I have nothing for 1.

If these opinions have been expressed before I apologise but 700 pages is too much to trawl thru.
I think Drew Wagar (DW) is being somewhat disingenuous. He says;
“The outcome wasn't predetermined” earlier in this thread, and again in his blog “Salomé’s death was the result of you, the Elite Dangerous community”
This is not quite correct. DW had already said before the event I think, that if Salomé ship was killed she would die.
But; in ED no commander ever dies, if the ship is killed then the Cmdr is transported via a “Magic” escape capsule (Magic is used here in the A. C. Clarke sense) to their last docked position. (A Cmdr can die by deleting their save and adopting another name but the controlling entity `you’ is still alive) )
Whilst I am somewhat sad that DW `allowed’ this to happen, since over the course of Reclamation, Kahina Tijani Loren, (KTL) appeared to become a better character; this is his absolute right as the owner of this particular IP,. Also, there are still so many unanswered plot lines. Perhaps they will be explored, in the book, or when/if the person/character is resurrected.

It is also a regular plot mechanic of many authors, and although Salomé and ex-Senator (KTL) may be dead (from a certain point of view) there is nothing to stop DW bringing the person / character they represent back under another name.

This has already happened to KTL before at the start of Elite Reclamation where she is killed or severely injured by Dalk but her body / mind is preserved with some `magic’ tech.

The near immortality of humans in ED is quite a reasonable premise give the probable advances of medicine and physiology, over a thousand years. It would also explain the total population of the `bubble’ since even allowing for a high fecundity, if current mortality rates continued then the indicated populations would be improbable/impossible (even with cloning?) An indefinite lifespan might also explain the rather unpleasant culture of killing of ships with the possibility of harm to the person/s inside. Even if you don't die its going to hurt! (And yes, I know its a game, but the culture which is part of this game is not particularly pleasant and seems to be getting worse)
