Newcomer / Intro Frustrated, irritated, and failing to like this game so far

Hi,

I would strongly suggest getting a joystick, even a cheap one is better than a mouse in MHO.

That will really help with manoeuvring, after all you are flying a space ship and you would not want to fly a plane simulator without a joystick would you?

Martin

drgnmstr44 .......Don't give up on this game. Once you get past the controls you will love every learning minute you are on. I too use a keyboard and mouse. I have a joystick but I found more control without it. Using a plain old mouse won't get it. Try a gaming mouse.....works much better and the control setting work better with it. Watch the You Tube videos. If you have a question there is a video on it. To be honest with you....The people that are playing this game will be more than happy to help you....They will go out of their way and even wing up with you to help. Once you you get the hang of it...You will be hooked. Remember...no question is stupid...

Not trying to be a jerk but... I just started playing as well and while i enjoy the depth I think it could be even harder. Flight and docking are very easy.

But I'm a flight simmer and I researched this game before buying. I got it because of the flight sim nature to it.

No go on the mouse and keyboard. Bleh. Get you a $20 joystick.

At this point, we're really much more interested in considered opinions than "first impressions". People here are more
than happy to help you if you're new, or confused, and there is a dedicated game manual available online as well.

Actually there is a first impressions "sticky" thread up there ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ at the top of this forum.

Or 20 quid on a wired Xbox one controller / PS4 controller, or a couple of quid on a usb cable for one (if you already have either).

First impression, game it terrible. tutorials in game need LOTS of work. LOTS!

A friend helped me get the insane mouse settings under control, the sensitivity slider isn't a slider but fixed points. I don't have a fancy joystick either.

Finally get though flying and docking. Again ZERO information about thrusters with keyboard and mouse. I pushed all the buttons till I finally found the one to make me thrust down. That should NEEDS fixed.

I get through the first combat easy enough but know what they failed to explain? the hud in the bottom center of the screen that shows where the targets are in relationship to you. I get put them in the front arc to shoot them. I don't understand the symbols and lines but able to slog through it.

Advanced combat, yeah right. TERRIBLE. get killed EVERY time. guy gets to a point where he can shoot the crap out of me and I can't see him or get him in front of me anymore. Best I got was taking shields down and finally figuring out how to shoot missiles (because again the tutorial didn't tell you how to do this) and hitting the guy maybe twice. I don't know really.

I really ant to like this game because a lot of my friend like it. I've played space flight games before but this one is really terrible at the moment. I'm frustrated, stuck and not really sure what to do.

Elite takes time. This is not one of those games that chews your food and regurgitates it for you like so many of these modern games do.
Personally I love that about Elite.

Just go slow. Take the time to fly the tutorial missions. Watch the tutorial videos. That stuff is really helpful.
Do not expect to be an ace after a few hours of playing. Do not expect to know everything in a few weeks even.
And in the beginning be prepared to have your ship blown up a few times. Use your Sidewinder time to get to know your ship's controls and do risky stuff.
In Elite you will have to earn it and I assure you that in the long run this is much more satisfying.

Do not expect to be able to finish all tutorial missions immediately either. When I started playing a few years ago they got quite difficult. I never finished the harder ones.

My time in the lowly Sidewinder was the most fun I had. People get an Anaconda in a week or even a weekend these days. That kills the game afaiac.
It took me more than a year and I was in a sidewinder for two weeks. Not because I had to, but because it was great fun to be smart about it and try to get big bounties with the help of the cops.
My second ship was the Viper III and it was incredible when I took it out for the first time. It really meant something and I was mighty proud when I got good enough to take out Anacondas with it.
There is so much to like about ED, and mostly because it does not treat you like a two year old.

I have to say when I started in ED I was a bit intimidated by the "it's too complicated" comments everywhere. I did a couple of tutorials and then jumped in the game. A bit of a letdown about being "too hard". I just found it fine and not difficult at all.

A few months before ED I played a lot rFactor2. That thing shows you several parameters to tweak suspensions for example. No manual not tutorial and the IA is pretty hard even for the experienced. If you want to know how to make a setup, get a real world book on how to learn the process. Flight simulators are even harder. ED? not that much. I mean, it is not CoD or Mario Kart of course, but far from "too hard". As other people said, there is a manual that explains everything to get started and how most of the things work.

I don't have any Hotass or Joystick and always used mouse + KB. The hardest thing at first was docking, but after a couple of days I was landing at full speed.

Manuals? Tutorials? Bleurgh!

Strap yourself into a Sidewinder and get out there. You will die, a lot at first, then you will get better, and other people will die under the raging fury of your Sidey's lasers. Practice makes perfect and all that good stuff :)

However, I'm still on m&k, never got on with my HOTAS which is now gathering dust.

Hey Dragon, I was exactly where you are now just a couple of weeks ago, but something about it made me keep coming back and trying. At first I spent more time reading about the game and watching YouTube vids than playing the game - which I thought was kinda lame but I took it as a challenge and studied. I'm not usually the kind of guy who would do that, I've got a job and wife and she's bit....concerned..haha. I can say for myself that I'm pretty obsessed w/this game, but it's a very different experience. You make your own goals, and have to figure everything out either the hard way, or by asking for help. I started the thread 'Soooo Frustrated!' in this section, there you can see my progress and all of the amazing help/advice I've received.

I've purchased a better ship, upgraded it a lot, done lots of missions and passenger transports now, have over a million credits built up but still haven't dug into combat - and like many, I'm sure, it was my first instinct to try shooting guys. I'll get there but want to better understand all of the mechanics to reduce my having to rebuy my ships so often. Another guy here, Malc, who has helped me a lot in pvt messages, mentioned that he likes to spend a relaxing evening just mining materials and selling them - what a concept, a game doesn't have to be all frenetic and fighting and racing and killing, you can just build up your ranks and earn credits while having a relaxing evening! Kinda cool. You can just go exploring the universe and you'll still advance because you pick up data that you can later sell.

Most here are MUCH more proficient than I will ever be, so I'll leave it to them to give you specific advice for now, but I'll say that, for me, the time/effort I put into studying the game has paid off - I can't play any other game at this point, they all seem trivial. Good luck Commander, and let me know if I can be of any help.

Liking is irrelevant just play the game. Resistance is futile. You exist to service the game.

I didn't want the game to hold my hand. I wanted an experienced pilot to train me. I couldn't achieve that. Everyone suggested "strap yourself in and go die." I don't believe that's the right methodology to approach space flight when everything is being recorded. No one wanted to claim responsibility for my death for not training me properly. I refuse to believe dying is ok or "part of the learning curve."
The people that say it is also say "it's just a game."

I don't believe that. Hundreds of hundreds of people can feed their family by working on these kinds of projects. I'm the one that sees that. I can give them the respect they deserve. I'm not a casual gamer. Do I even belong among these people? This isn't possibly the best place for me. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I can't agree with this part. Whether dying is a part of the learning curve depends on the game design. And in Elite, dying IS part of the game and part of what you have to do repeatedly to learn to play it right. And people who say "It's just the game" are right. For some, overcoming a challenge presents entertainment. Involved and fun, not a passive one, like movies and books, but one that requires focus and dedication. For others, challenge is a deterrent and a hurdle on their way to entertainment.
Only one of these two groups can enjoy Elite. It IS just a game. Meaning that, like other kinds of entertainment, you have a choice to not participate.

There is no shame in walking away from a thing that you don't enjoy. But you can't use your subjective judgement as an argument for or against quality of other people's work.

That being said, if you don't want to do something, don't do it. However if you see potential, if you believe that you may enjoy Elite in time and all you need is a bit of a guidance, you only need to ask.

Some people like it, some dont. I love the fact that we have a game which doesnt hold your hand, tells everything what you need to know, screen full of "go there, do that"-markers. Thats for filthy console peasants.. :D
Back in 2014 when the game was launched, i was so excited when i sat in my Sidewinder for the first time, i just kept thinking that finally a game where you have to learn everything by yourself.
But, im C64 generation and if you think ED is hard, go try the original, 1984 version.. Or any other C64 game for that matter.

It wasn't so easy in Elite Plus in the early 90's either. But the learning curve is steep. But I found a video that really illustrates this frustration but in a humorous way.

I had a good laugh, especially when I remember almost doing the same thing that this guy did my 3rd time exiting a rotating station. Anyway, I figured it would be hard when I started on release day of 2014. But that was fine. I said, "I don't need no stinking training missions. Look out galaxy, here I come." Unfortunately, the galaxy said, "Great, another insignificant speck with delusions of grandeur." :D

Took me about two weeks to learn to land. I died a lot. And I'm still here. Plenty of people will help if you ask nicely. But to call a game terrible because you havent worked out how to play it is not going to make you friends...

I am trying to think of a game that I never died in... or failure was not an option. hmm Lego Star Wars, The Force Awakens... that is about it.

In Elite Dangerous you have the option of a self imposed Iron Man mode, maybe that is what you seek? Two years of playing this game I still die, sometimes stupidly and sometimes because I am pushing the limits of my ability. This is what being a gamer is about. It is also what real life is about. We humans did not achieve our little poke into space or any great adventure without sacrificing a few lives.

training from experienced pilots? maybe you would like you check out Git Gud Flight School for commanders. Discord https://discord.gg/shKQxqZ
