my first docking attempt

One advantage to taking the SRV is that it allows you to do any mission that requires one. Planetary scan, skimmer destruction, surface salvage -- these tend to be pretty lucrative missions.

The thing is, all SRVs are the same, so even as a newcomer you have the same equipment as the wealthiest player.

I did a restart of the game recently, and definitely took advantage of the SRV to give me more options.

You can watch me play the game from the beginning here, if you're interested, in this video series I did to help newcomers.

Yeh its a good, and chilled series, its been plastered all over the discord channel :). I watched it some months back after the initial PS4 announcement, well worth a watch for people new to Elite Dangerous.

I hear we can't sell the SRV, but we can unequip and store it for later on a different ship, correct?

This is correct....

I will start off planet side. Having limited access to the Xbox version, I have gotten used to the controls and know my way around a tad. I would recommend those that haven't to start in space where as you are not dealing with gravity. I am not sure what the specs are for this planet and I am pretty sure it is a lower gravity world but it still will want to pull your ship down to the ground. It is so much fun that we can now really see the light at the end of this very dark tunnel. Oh.... Wait.... That might just be the star that I see as I am coming out of warp! HAHA!

I just want to be able to go for jolly's planet side!!!As for cargo and Jump range - i wont be doing much travelling until i purchase an eagle or something.

Yea, stopping at all the pubs and having a pint or two, maybe even bird dog some alien chicks.

to be honest i prefer a nice white wine, and a hot climate somewhere like Betelgeuse. girl needs to work on her tan between exploring and dodging pirates

If you want to explore the different game mechanics and try a few planetary landings then taking the free srv does kind'a make sense tbh :)

If you're more keen on making credits fast to get out of the sidewinder then you lose four tons of cargo capacity leaving you with only two :/

The one jump delivery missions I came across in the starter system using a new commander were mainly either two, three or six ton missions with the three ton missions paying anything upto 130k

I really wouldn't worry about saving 18k on a module you may or may not be able to store as it's only loaned anyway ;)

Two tons is all I need, a keg of beer, a crate of Viagrah and a couple of fat chicks will max me out. But what a party I'll have.

couldn't you just store the shields replacing them with cargo racks then do a few cargo runs and surface missions then get shields when the need takes you

Yeah but I wouldn't recommend that to any new pilot especially in a paper thin sidewinder!

It does make sense to learn the ropes with the srv early on I just wouldn't get too caught up in the 'free module' aspect as you'll earn money fast enough either way :)

As a player who has cleared save on the PC many times (as a role-playing enthusiast, I tend to stick with a particular "persona", until I get bored with it, and want to try something different), I usually start at the LHS3447, there are enough missions nearby to get into a Cobra in a couple of hours play, and then you have room from an SRV and plenty cargo.

Although, as I like to play as a survey and salvage expert, I tend not to get into SRV based missions until I've got a Federal Dropship happening.

There you old folks go hijacking another thread ;) I'll get us back on topic.

So, the big question for OP is, "We get to choose where we start?" For some reason I thought we just "woke up" somewhere, perhaps with amnesia. ObsidianAnt did a video on this awhile back, and I don't remember him having a "Where would you like to start?" screen. I may well have missed it.
