PSN+ account vs off line

From what I've read, one has to have an internet connection to play ED. But one doesn't need to have an psn+ account thus saving $60.00 (US). Having a psn+ allows one to play in a multiplayer (open) format or vs strickly solo. Playing in either is an option with a paid psn+ account, where as only solo is available to one not having psn+. The $60.00 isn't an issue, I'm courious as to why one needs an internet connection if the are utilizing a cd, and plan to only play in solo.

You are correct in that PSN+ is only needed for group or open play. But You need an internet connection because ALL players affect, and are affected by, the background simulation. This is regardless of whether you play in Solo, Group or Open. The game is designed this way; if you want to play then you have to be online.

Additionally, you are not really playing from the Bluray disk. Because all players must play at the same game version the disk will become obsolete as soon as the next update (2.4) arrives and you download it, even ignoring minor patch updates, which may well land before 2.4 arrives.

Attempting to play online in 3rd. world countries can and genereral is a daunghting affair. Even with "Auto Save" one looses their progress to a degree everytime the connection is broke, regardless of reason. In an average 8 to 10 hour play session, I can loose my connection a dozen to two dozens times. Via my dial up and or glitches in server. Hence in Mexico, online playing "SUCKS".

Yeah, I get that. Although there is no way to play this game off line, it's online footprint is actually pretty small, especially for solo mode.

Playing NMS didn't require a connection unless one wanted to automaticaly install patches and or upgrades, neither does Hitman. I played NMS for 3,000 hours with out all the patches by using just the disk. One day after playing for 7 months, I messed up and for whatever reason, NMS upgraded itself, with my connection speed it took 18 hours. The upgrade changed things to the tune of it's almost a different game from the original.

I would like to experience fully, playing in a multiplayer format, but with an unreliable connection, confusing such issues as "combat logging" with it, could and probably would be detrimental to my standings as a worthy player.

You need a connection so that Market data, transactions, Matchmaking (I know... It's odd. I'll get to that), discovery data, etc. can be used. When you log in to play, your account goes to Authentication and you are moved into a game server, Selecting ANY option (Open, Private, or Solo) other than the training missions will place you in matchmaking so the game knows where you are. When you make a purchase, your transaction pings the Transaction server and the item is purchased and your credits are deducted from your account (we all have a Bank of Zaonce account. Deal. Wasn't my first choice but I had to get a Sidewinder somehow and theft is often frowned upon.). As you enter a system, your game downloads market data for the Commodity Market, Missions are downloaded, and NPCs are spawned depending on the system's population and economic state.

Edit: Also the data needed is incredibly low. I was seeing less than a kilobyte (bits really. less than a Byte.) while I was out in the black but I haven't check the connection since. Still really low though so don't worry.

Related to Bill's OP, if I'm playing in solo and my Internet drops, will I be instantly booted from solo? Is my progress being saved on the server in real time? Or, let's say I'm suffering some heavy latency that day, I'm assuming that won't affect gameplay in solo, expect perhaps longer time in hyperspace since that's basically a load screen for the next system.

Great question.

I have NEVER had lag in Solo (you'll know when you have lag. You'll see things "bounce" along their path.), but I've had missiles just hanging in space after detonation, or transitions [Orbital cruise to the surface of a planet] taking longer than normal and I've had market and mission data take one-and-a-half geological ages to load. It's an annoyance at most.

If your internet connection drops you will get a message within about 60 secs of play depending on what you are doing about loss of connection. You will be booted from game and back to game menu.

When connection re-established the start option will become ungraded and you will find yourself in the last star system you were in and location at the time the game lost connection. If it happens during jump to next system you will appear back at the system you started jumping from.

If you were Ina. CZ or RES then you will appear in same location and NPC's will start spawning in as if you had just arrived.

All kills, damage or mission status will be as it was prior to disconnection.

However, anything you were in the middle of doing (killing that 200K Anaanconda or scanning that beacon) will be lost as it wasn't completed at the time of disconnection.

The only thing I've ever noticed I've lost is usually any fuel I've just scooped :( it happens instantly on xbox, no message warning it's about to happen.
It normally happens when entering or exiting supercruise/hyperspace and your first indication is that it's taking longer than normal :( it can also happen in the station menus.

You'll probably get used to it on launch day tbh as major patch releases tend to be abit rocky with frequent disconnects on the day with everyone hammering the servers!

I thought Emergency Repair Procedure 001 was only to be used for... Ya know... REPAIRS! Not taking a sledge hammer to the Transaction servers during Live. Or am I just having flashbacks to the first Beta?

During the xbox gpp the hardest aspect of the game was handing missions in before the timer ran down lol ;)

It has improved loads since those days thank God! :) the only real thing you lose with a disconnect is time tbh so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi, I've tried the PC version and the network seems fine in Open play so hopefully the PS4 will be fine too. Don't want to be seeing frequent disconnects.

Just for clarity...PSN+ can be confusing

Playstation Now - PSN ...A game streaming service (Think a game version of Netflix) playing past Sony games some of which have multiplayer. I don't think that multiplayer ED will be supported. We'll see.

Playstation Plus - PS+ ...The primary access to multiplayer games including ED. Also access to free games, early releases, patches and DLC which will be required for future ED updates.

Make sure that you purchase the correct service for ED. Even if a player doesn't want multiplayer mode they might need PS+ for the updates. Then maybe not for Solo players who might still get the updates! Nothing is very clear per Frontier or Sony. We'll see after June 27th...

So how offten does ones progress get saved. For instance, every time I exit my ship in NMS, it saves, thus with a bad server and or dial up connection, one will deliberately exit their ship for no other reason but to save ANY progress.

All your progress is saved on the server pretty much constantly. Everytime you open a menu, enter hyperspace or dock you're sending and requesting that info from fdev who monitor and record it.

Thats why the game can disconect in menus or for example exiting supercriuse as it tries to connect to the server but can't.

The only local save on your machine is for your settings/control binds.

well i will be in open from the start, the only time i will ever be in solo is if i have psn+ payment issues. so i am basically good to go
