News Elite Dangerous - 2.4 and beyond

Core gameplay and quality of life improvements - very happy about this! :)

One thing that I suddenly realised I would quite like...
Everything at the moment feels pretty macro, everything is playing out in a grand arena of political or corporate manoeuvring, powerplay, mass dynamics, regional markets, galactic threat etc.
I suppose we can forge more 'personal' narratives by working with friends, but I don't personally enjoy multiplayer because a universe full of people wanting a great game experience (with these limited mechanics) is just not something I find hugely compelling.
But that multiplayer point is just my own not entirely relevant silliness.
But it would be great is there was more 'micro' narrative - more human moments - missions involving people wanting to send parcels to family members, people wanting to move to new stations to avoid local station police, people wanting the salvage of a lost heirloom, etc.
There are of course missions like this already, but they're always issued by some sort of collective.
It would be nice if there were more personal missions, NOT at the behest of a company/political body.
I don't know what gameplay consequence this could have, and I'm not sure how the economy would support it: Not much incentive to transport a package for an individual for 30 credits! But I feel a layer of life between us individual pilots and the grand machinations of the galaxy's powers would be lovely.

Gah. I'm drivelling. Carry on.

So you'll be working on existing features after the 2.4 Thargoid breadcrumb trail.

Not really sure why anyone is surprised, this surely goes without saying.

On release many players believed in the vertical slice theory (i was one of them) most of us expected the core features to be updated and expanded upon to the point where they began to resemble the DDF or at least deepened the gameplay to somewhere close to the vision the devs would talk about during early development.

Two very obvious elements that must be addressed to fulfill the basic concept most kickstarters thought was a given are a dynamic economy and persistent NPC's. I really hope that these elements of the game can be developed beyond the extremely basic systems we have at the moment.

Some of us are losing faith here, i'm the only player left of the group that i started playing with 2 and a half years ago and i for one cannot honestly recommend the game on stream or to friends until FD get the very basics covered :(

Sorry to come across as negative but to me this info should be obvious and certainly is not newsworthy enough to make a thread about.

Still i'm glad to hear you are not going to introduce any new "features" and will be working on expanding the core gameplay loops that are still woefully underdeveloped.

Actually, the manner in which they have developed the game is pretty much as I expected.....though I had hoped for the original, shorter timeframe. Ramp up the amount of features in the core game, then go back & refine/improve all those features.

Thanks FD and thanks to all my fellow "whiners" for pushing FD to work on improving the core game. We couldn't have done it without you.

Fanboys, you can offer apologies and thank us "whiners" any time you'd like........any time.

Thank you for the news and keep up the good work. I'm enjoying it very much. One suggestion tho ... PLEASE don't make it easier than it already is :) The sweet feeling of accomplishment and success comes from overcoming difficult tasks :)

Nah, if I want to be the "hero" of a story with a single driving narrative, then I will play Mass Effect or CoD. Thr beauty of Elite-going back all the way to 1984-is the ability to "do your own thing".

But I think there's a balance to be found. Don't forget, in 1984 we had missions like the stolen Constrictor ship with the cloaking device. I felt pretty darned heroic when I finally settled my account with him.

I think the game would really benefit from an occasional one-off 'hero' mission that was unique and unrepeatable. I think that would enhance the existing routine missions and bring a bit more wonder to the game, in that as rare as they might be, you'd never be completely sure what the next station might ask you to do.

Can some people not read?
Post says... "we're going to enhance the core gameplay and fix issues".
People reply saying "this isn't good enough, I want them to enhance the core gameplay and fix the bugs".

Am I just stupid, am I missing the glaringly obvious here are are some people so used to moaning that even when they get offered what they want their brain refuses to actually decipher what they just read? Sheesh.

If it is not atmospheric landings after 2.4 I think I'm gonna trip. I'm so tired of the "hold the candy in front of the baby" policy. I want candy!!!

That's why they only post generic, utterly vague stuff just to show they are alive and give players a bone to gnaw. And if they can seize the occasion to build a bit more hype from the fanboy part of their community, even better.

That was my point. Zac didn't really say much of anything. He spoke about "core gameplay" and "qol" and that's about it. There's LOTS of things people enjoy or hate about this game and ALL of us consider those bits to be "core". You only have to read through the comments here to see that... there's been comments based on Zacs remarks about everything from trade to exploration to pewpew to the fact that groups/solo can affect the BGS. What we really need to know is what FDEV considers to be "core gameplay and qol"... otherwise it's just people continuing to rant about their personal favourites.

Oh, and another thing - what's that crazy "seperation/removal of solo/group" you're talking about...? Are you mental?...

Don't look at me, i didn't come up with it, notlr do I agree with it. Read through the comments here... I can't remember.who posted it but someone replied to Zac suggesting that it was a "core problem" and should be changed. I only pointed it out to highlight just how different various players ideas on what makes up "core features" can be.

I don't think there could be more clarity about it without a roadmap, and it's quite clear that it's too soon for that.

As I mention above, I'm interested to know what THEY think are "core gameplay and qol". I don't expect we'll get that info until it's about to be released however.

Huzzah! I mean, took you lot long enough, but I'm really glad you've decided to step back from the constant Capitalised Buzzwords and actually go back and refine existing features instead of implementing them and effectively abandoning them when the next update rolls around. I'll still keep my praise reserved until I see the actual results, but I feel this is what Elite really needs. The bones are good, the individual mechanics are really quite good, but the dearth of meat on said bones has been holding the game back thus far in a big way.

Oh, but... please tell me this doesn't mean atmospheric planets are getting pushed even further back? Look, I know I just railed against headline features, but... atmospheres would kind of be one of the things that would really help exploration in a big way. After giving it some actual gameplay mechanics, of course.

A thought just oçcured....I do hope that Dominic & Adam will add some new mission templates into the mix, & not only enhance/improve the missions we already have ;).

Fair call, mate.

I saw someone proclaiming that it was a obligation and just went straight for the table-flip

That's not a core gameplay mechanic, so unlikely. But I look forward to that day too.

Errr... did you even read the update? It was specifically about fixing bug and deepening the core gameplay without adding new features.

Actually, they haven't ruled out new features-its just that it won't be the focus of the updates, & has to be features that enhance/improve existing gameplay.

Wow, what a nice morning surprise! Thank you Zac and the rest of FD! This information was much needed and is very appreciated.

What's been said, what it means, and what's expected, are subjective to say the least. So let's wait and see, perhaps FD will surprise us all. :)

I hope this doesn't mean we're going to get 12 months of noodling about with material quantities and the recharge times for shield cell banks. I realise these sorts of things get the busiest and angriest forum threads, but personally I couldn't care less!

As a kickstarter backer I've got to be honest with you Frontier I was losing faith in you and Elite Dangerous. My gripes were wide ranging, from powerplay to multicrew, from exploration to engineers, from CQC to core mechanics and much more besides.

Now, although this news doesn't have me bouncing up and down in glee it has done something to me that I haven't felt for you guys and the game in quite a while, it has rekindled my hope. There has been a lot of focus on new players since launch and very little with regards to player retention, if you strike anywhere near the right note here Frontier you could have that golden ticket, new players and retention.

Thanks for the news guys, brought a smile to my face and more importantly has given me enough hope to stick around longer - at least to find out where we go beyond 2.4 - maybe, just maybe Elite Dangerous can become Elite again, maybe, just maybe it could still be the game we all know it could be.

Thanks Zac, great to have an official confirmation of generally where you guys are focusing your attentions for the moment. It puts my mind at rest for the general direction this game is taking going forward. I've seen loads of people recently wondering whether the post-2.4 updates are going to be headline feature focused or focused on improving the existing game, and while I'm sure these updates will contain some great new features, it's comforting to know that the main focus of development will be improving what we've already got.

Please do exploration first, though, I've had Cygnus X-1 bookmarked on the galaxy map for a very long time now just waiting for improvements to be made to black holes. I'd love it to get to looking its very best before I go visit it. Pretty please! XD

2.4 – “????”

Back at EGX in 2015 we showcased the headline features that would be coming to Horizons. However, there’s always been an extra little update, a mystery if you will, that has yet to be revealed.

We’ll be providing a little more information about the update to the community and the press during E3 on June 13th and 14th. We’ll be hosting special community livestreams and activity so stay tuned for more news and updates as we get closer to the date.

Announcement!

We hereby announce that an announcement will be announced at a future date!
