Discussion Orrery For System Map?

I'm wondering if there exists an orrery for use to look at system maps in "3D" similar to the way the Galaxy Map is presented. The current system map is nice, but it's flat and does not show objects relative to each other in space.
Flying through a system with the orbit lines on gives some idea of how objects are related and their paths, but I want to be able to pull up a tool that gives a "birds-eye" view and let's me see where things are relative to each other and how everything orbits around.
There are some really unique and crazy systems I've encounterd. It would be helpful for us visual learner types to see it as a model you could manipulate and get an idea of distances between objects.

Any ideas if something like this already exists as a tool I could pull up in game? Is there the capacity to build something like this?

Just wondering...

Well, Telronyin (and everybody as well I bet) would love to have the orrery in game, and not as third party installment...

Yes, is that not magical?
Having that in the game would completely change the experience for me.
I want that orrery so much.
Luckily FD wants it too. I hope they are working on it.

I just get a blank white screen.

Well I can't get it to work either..... it's so laggy...it freezes all the time. It's a pity cause it has a lot of potential.... but it's unusable !!!!

Assuming you are referring to the site I linked to (I have no connection with it)...

It works fine for me using Firefox, I have a script-blocker but I only have to "allow elitegalaxyonline.com" for the site to work fine.

The page I linked to is the first page in a list of available orreries - there are 584 it says (orreries not pages).

Selecting a system's orrery to view takes you through an animation (like h-jump) and results in a 3-d model of that system, centred on the major star showing orbits and planet labels - the model is zoomable and moveable, and by "mouse-over" reveals info panels.

It is very well done and I think it could be great if it developed.

Here is the Orrery for Sol as an example:

Doesn't work... it freezes... I've got 300Mb optical fiber in Spain. I don't know what the problem is... Running Firefox without adblock.

I have no idea why it wouldn't work for you, I just rechecked and yes it runs fine here in the UK on 50Gb broadband. I am not attached to the site so can't help.

Seconded, is the Orrey map still planned for a future update?

Is it just me, or is the fact that such a system map can be done in JS/AJAX but not in the game it's from, incredibly disappointing?

One thing really nice for Exploration and cataloging is that noted site: Elite Galaxy Online.
I have been looking deeper into this site and its really an Exploration key which allows for an explorer to actively do something with their discoveries. It complements ED nicely providing depth to exploration by giving the user the ability to create catalog findings and build Orrery maps in an interesting and robust manner. Indeed its 3rd party, but frankly that is ok and actually beneficial/preferred. If FD provided this in-game it would be extra overhead affecting dev cycles on base game support whereas the community can handle the requirement. I am all for these types of complements which enrich base ED. Excellent job/hats off to the Devs of Elite Galaxy Online. I just started a new long haul trip into the black for a Passenger exploration mission. Looking forward to complementing the trip with this online tool to capture/catalog the discoveries along the way! o7

I agree that Elite Galaxy Online looks wonderful and is a great tool to use, but it is not a tool that lends itself to ease of use while playing the game. I have found an example of a working orrery in the G19 Companion app by MagicMau that better represents what I think many of us would like to see in the game. Seems simple enough, but I am not a programmer. :)
