My visit to Frontier Developments and the Future of the Game

It's the imposed secrecy and tight lipped stance on the game's development I'm having a hard time with... followed by Uber-hype at game events before anything appears.

Probably just too used to the information overload from SC.

I appreciate that Frontier let some of us in and appreciate you took the time to talk about it. Though, it doesn't seem like there's anything new to learn here that I didn't already know or assume. A positive thing that happened here overall, but staying neutral until I see the goods, for my own sanity of course. :)

Thanks OA for this.

My time in game is diminishing and even my time lurking on this forum (not that much of a poster but was lurking daily) was diminishing after 2.3 was released. Before this I was having my breaks and still generally enjoying the game but something about 2.3 and the perceived direction FD were taking the game really turned me off. I bought my name plates and a bit more but then pretty much logged off and not been back.

I don't think I would question FD's enthusiasm for ED or the dedicated team of people who are doing a fantastic job but maybe it was turning into the product that 'was not for me' which was leaving me genuinely disappointed. I was hoping the info due to come out of E3 and beyond would bring back some of the excitement from the early days. It certainly seems from the people that visited who are responding in this thread there is reason to be excited. I do hope so.

Though does this video qualify as a teaser trailer for the trailers to come at E3? How very marketing savvy of FD ;)

So we've got what, three? Four? More? people who actually saw what's coming and are unanimous that's it's pretty good stuff.

And then there's you.

Think I'll go with the people that have actually seen it and know what they're talking about. How's that for critical thinking ?

I'll leave this here - the best predictor of future behaviour is...?

With SC they need to keep the backers happy with the money they have spent. Some would say it's backfired no end as when RSI change, delay or remove features it always creates a storm of bad feeling.

Hearing about how and when they plan to communicate 2.4 and beyond what struck me is that there is legitimate plan in mind, and tbh the reasons for doing it this way are sound and in the best interests of us and the game.

... Same here, already over a year ago FD confirmed they had teams working on non-S2 things such as atmo planets.

Yes I can imagine that the creation of atmospheric planets with flora and fauna in a huge open galaxy like Elite's will eat up a huge number of man-hours.
I can't even begin to comprehend how FD will be doing this. Of course there's PG, but still... they will have to create a ridiculous number of assets and make sure that the fauna will look and behave much more convincing then what we got with NMS for example.
They have so much on their plate.

Were they identifiable? We need to know what sort of biscuits they were to know if he truly is a man of culture. Or is the biscuit/biscuits of origin under NDA?

Not sure

This is great news, but this is in the back of my mind; it's likely what, 6 months until 2.4 start, with 6 or more months after that for the core mechanic improvements. So frankly while this is good news, I'm just not all that excited yet. But I was never really afraid that ED was dying, so if that was your fear, I can see how this would be exciting.

I was one of the "others" who went to Frontier Towers to do some recording etc.

I can confirm everything OA said above about the number of staff working on ED.

After Zac had made us a cup of tea/coffee and I quietly remarked on the condition of my cup...

http://i.imgur.com/KNpuBBP.jpgHmmm nice chip I thought.... Not deliberate Zac said......

We were given a tour as mentioned the staff levels are easily over 100 working on Elite Dangerous and everyone I spoke to had such enthusiasm not only for the game but for Frontier as well.

I was chatting to a couple of the QA team outside while having a crafty smoke and both were wearing Elite Tshirts and the enthusiasm for the game they have is so apparant.

As OA said we did get a sneak preview on some content but as my NDAs with Frontier are rapidly heading towards double figures I really can't discuss anything but all I will say is...

OH MY GOD!!!!!!! You are really going to love what's coming.

We did the Voice over work and I can admit to only causing a medium level of chaos and confusion in the sound department and the guys and girls there eventually stopped laughing and Rootsrat managed to escape the booth he found himself in with myself. they seemed happy with what we had done and yes hopefully we will be in game as well.

It's always nice to catch up with the guys and girls at Frontier and got to have a good chat with David who very kindly signed my Amiga copy of Frontier and My Premium Backers version of ED and thankfully refused to write Zac's suggestion to write I blame T.j on it. (phew)

Oh and Obsidian's voice is even more soothing in person... I nearly fell asleep under DBOBE's Desk at one point.

Just wanted to say to the folks at Frontier, thanks for the invite and the very, very brave call to allow me to potentially be in game..........mad...

You may have escaped a split lip this time TJ but your time will come......

Great news all round and thank you for the write ups! Though, I have the feeling I might have missed something here, but, question to anyone who went... Why?

You've said you went there to do some voice overs... But why? How comes FD suddenly seemingly out of the blue invited 3 or 4 "random" members of the community to come in and do voice acting and show them a sneak peek of things to come?

I mean no disrespect in that at all, it's just I'm not understanding the connection here... If someone could explain for the sake of context please?

Bits of voice acting, you say? I suppose there is zero chance Lukozer was among you? (He'd probably never sign an NDA anyway...)

I dunno... I've just been fantasising for several months about FD convincing the guy to come in and voice a fully fledged unique, persistent NPC - some gruff lone wolf explorer type. Direction: "Here's a chair, a mic, and a pack of cigarettes; Just be yourself". :9

Thanks to the visitors for taking the time to post, and it's heartening to feel the enthusiasm coming from them and Fdev.

I just hope OA's audio concludes with 'I'll catch you guys and gals next time'... pretty please!

I'd expect that the reason is covered by the NDA that each visitor signed....

They have so much on their plate.

NMS has proven that it was not a viable solution. And life is something rare, I bet they'll only go with handcrafted assets for fauna and flora, just like they've done with non atmospheric planets :

I think it's about quality and rarity rather than quantity, I'm sure it will be an event whenever some new "inhabited" planet is dscovered, just like it was in Horizons...
