Your Best Elite Dangerous Tips Wanted - Welcome the PS4 Players

1. On the galaxy map when you have plotted the route, the solid line shows your range with your current fuel load. A dotted line shows you the rest of the way.
2. If you are worried about running out of fuel, you can use the galactic map to route plot only scoopable suns (KGBFOAM)
3. Leaving your gear down will stop you boosting into things
4. Never exceed the speed limit inside the station in case you get wanted for colliding,
5. Ships and credits are NOT game progression, they are tools. You can do any activity in the game with any ship
6. Learn when to run.. there are old pilots and bold pilots but no old and bold pilots..
7. When you are interdicted, throttle back to submit, turn around and then boost towards your assailant. Then either super cruise jump(low wake) or hyperspace (high wake) away.

Honk the galactic horn!

That little Sidewinder you're in right now comes equipped with a Basic Discovery Scanner. Don't sell it immediately, assign it to a fire button.

As you fly around, you will come to systems that your ships map doesn't know about. Honk that horn to discover the closest planets. If a station you are going to is orbiting a planet that is shown as "undiscovered". Target it and let it scan. You can sell this data at Cartographics as you go, it is essentially free money, and it can be a considerable boost to earnings.

Straight lines aren't the fastest way!

When you first enter a system after hyperjump and orient on your destination, drop above or below the ecliptic (easily seen with system lines turned on) to avoid gravity slowdowns passing through planetary orbits. Also, don't be afraid of looping around your destination, as it helps to throw off pirates looking to loot you.

When upgrading your ship, after installing all modules, launch the ship, go outside the no fire zone and deploy hardpoints, shoot at the void to test you have your power priorities set up correctly. If they are wrong, thrusters shields and life support will go offline. It's better to discover you've got it wrong while in a safe area rather than when under fire from other CMDR's or NPC's.

A good starting point for power priorities is in modules in the right hand panel, set everything for fighting (Weapons, Thrusters, Shields [Generators / Banks / Boosters] Life Support, Sensors, Ship Launched Fighter Hangar, and Point Defence Turrets on priority. Set the FSD to priority 2, and set the following items to priority 3: - SRV Hangar, Fuel Scoop, FSD Interdictor, Auto Field Maintenance System.

Watch your speed!

While in the firing zone of a station, there is a speed limit. This is 100 m/s.

If you go above this speed, you will be advised of this on your HUD on the far right hand side. The flight control operator at the station may also comment on your disdain for the rules. :p

Speeding alone will not get you into trouble. However, a collision with another ship will result in you being fined. If the collision kills the other ship, you will have a bounty placed on you... effective immediately. The station will open fire on you too.

Some non-altruistic types may try and get you killed by colliding with you on purpose while you are over the speed limit. So keep your eyes peeled and only risk exceeding the speed limit if you can handle the consequences!

Always exit the Game if AFK

Simple thing but if you are AFK for any amount of time remember to exit the game as there is no "pause". It will be either an expensive insurance bill, loss of exploring data or a severely damage ship. It's very easily done (I'm currently out in the black with hull at 39% after being called away while flying over a planet - thank heavens I had shields!)

1.
Turn off modules you are not actually needing to use at the moment.
Cargo hatch, srv bay, etc
Saves power (less heat, and uses less fuel.

2.
Set power priorities if little tight on power. example- set fuel scoop to priority 5, as it will not be needed in normal space, and if deploying weapons takes you over your power limit it will be the first thing to be disabled.

3.
Set fire groups to have more than one function. example- keep interdictor on same trigger as a weapon as it will only fire in supercruise and weapons won't etc (and vice versa).

4.
Have tea and biscuits to hand at all times.
And an emergency banana.

Always check your fuel gauge

Scoopable star classes are O, B, A, F, G, K, M. If you are not carrying a fuel scoop make sure on the Galaxy Map you route has a solid line to indicate you can make it on your current amount (a broken line indicates not enough fuel).

KGB FOAM is good rule of thumb. Soviet secret service and some comfy Foam

----------

All players are hostile until proven other vice. Any one can be your enemy.
Always H-wake (jump to other star system not in system travel) away from players when you want to run away.
Holo triangle means other players has deployed hardpoints or has tried to fire something that is mapped to fire group (like FSDI)
Never let players behind you while in sc, if you are closer to stellar body than him (if you are closer you are slower (gravity effect plah plah) and he will catch up with you and interdict you). Always either face players or be faster than them in sc, and all ships have same accelerator in sc.

Avoid interdictions by awareness: learn how to emergecy drop.

Play in open, it's a lot more fun and safer than people say, (but be alert in Shinrata, Maia, Leisti and CGs).

When you enter a system, look for hollow contacts appearing on your radar. Be aware!

If there are any following behind you, or if any make an obvious move to get into position behind you, learn how to emergency drop out by pressing "supercruise" twice.

From normal space you will have time to calmly exit the game and re join in solo long before the dastardly interdictor can drop into your wake.

You can then go safely about your business in the system and go back to open as soon as you're ready.

If you learn this skill, you will loose 1% of hull each time you employ it.

The CMDR interdicting you will probably gain a bounty and wanted status, and the delicious frustration that they cannot ever kill you.

Fly safe CMDRs.

When in Doubt - Ask

When in Doubt - Ask

Despite what reading the forums may suggest, we have an exceptional community here, and the vast number of us are all to willing to answer a question or several, provide guidance, advise, moral (or even immoral) support, hints, suggestions, recommendations - you name it, someone will want to talk about it.

Even some of our less savory characters around here will gladly explain things - like how to eject the cargo they interdicted you to steal ;-)

And #2: When something goes wrong, always blame TJ.

Invest in a good set of earphones

As beautiful as this game is visually, do not neglect the audio. Some good hard work was put into it by a lot of obviously talented people. I was sorry that I had neglected it for so long once I started paying attention.

The rest has been sufficiently covered by the rest of the posts.

I'd also like to re-emphasize Lunchmoney's awesome tip posted (2) above: "There is no end game!" Frontier has given you the entirety of the Milky Way galaxy to play in. Enjoy it, appreciate the little things, and take your time.

High wake!

A ship with a bigger mass than yours will increase the time you need to jump into supercruise within the same system (low wake)
To avoid this in a critical situation (combat, interdiction...) you can also jump to another star system (high wake) without being affected by this mass inhibition

Take A Break

Take A Break

This cannot be said enough times - log out to the menu, stand up, walk around. Get some water, look out your window.

Elite is an amazing game, and it comes with it's own temporal distortion built in - you'll look at the clock, it will be 7:30. You'll look again after a couple jumps, and it will be 9:45.
It's just plain healthy to take little breaks from time to time. You won't miss anything. The galaxy has been here for 13.21 billion years. It will still be here in ten minutes.

always keep an eye on your fuel gauge.

always bring with you a fuel scoop. scooping stars give you fuel. you can't scoop stars without a fuel scoop.

only some stars can be scooped so wach you heat lvl, if it goes above 60% without your fuel scoop activating, pull away from the star, it is not scoopable.

always have a discovery scanner on your ship.

try out everything you can in the game.

don't rush through the game to get the biggest ships and best equipment the smaller ships in the game can be hella fun. because you will find out the biggest ships might not be the best ones.

take your time. there is no need to rush in this game (exept with missions ofc.).

dont be sad and frustrated because not everything you want is in the game right now. this is a game that will mature over many months and years. this is not the first game that does this and won't be the last. just hang in there, do some combat missions, go exploring, find some cool stars and black holes to document. find things about the lore in this universe. and the thing you want will probably come eventualy.

be what you want, and if you say hello or o7 to someone he or she can become your wing partner.

don't be a griefer.

try these out and you will be fine. and remember the best of all HAVE PATIENCE.

bookmarks are your friends - mark those interesting planets etc while exploring as you may need to revisit them.

changed your controls ? pen and paper is your friend.

above all have fun

Always Wait For the Scan to Finish BEFORE Opening Fire!

And double check the other ship gas a Wanted flag! Even if you're sure they're a criminal. One misplaced shot on a ship you have locked onto will get you a bounty, and the full (unwanted) attention of every copper in the instance!
