First impressions

I play on PS4 Slim and framerate is stable. The only problem is the long load of the starport services board .
But the best thing is that DS4 feels really good in this game.

Played about an hour and a half last night, mostly training missions but popped into solo briefly for a quick look around and to change the paint job and set up my Holo-Me. [big grin]

Generally... love it! I'm going to spend countless hours on this, but then I always knew that would be the case I've pretty much been waiting for this since 1984!

I'm on a regular PS4 and yes, there was noticeable screen-tearing, only really when using head-look as far as I could see and very noticeable inside stations. Oh, it happened when using the camera suite too. Had a look round my newly blinged Sidey in the hangar and moving the camera about was causing some pretty bad tearing.

Not ideal but I can live with it for now, as long as they can manage to fix it in the not-to-distant. Looking forward to getting back to it tonight and being a bit more adventurous.

Great to see you all having fun, Congrats commanders!

I brought a ps4 in anticipation of no man's sky. Then discovered elite dangerous and got a second hand xbox to play that. Within six months id built a gaming rig to play on pc. Then no man's sky came out and I played for two weeks then returned to Elite with my tale between my legs and haven't looked back since.

Very tempted to get a third ps4 account...

Anyway have a blast and fly safe, be careful about travelling to the pleiades, I think it's about to kick off over there :O

Xbox cmdr here just lurking to see how you guys are getting on and it all seems pretty smooth .
Two little things I would say , don't worry about the tearing the Xbox version was a mess at first and got rapidly fixed by FD , the other thing is I'm going against what others have said in this thread get out of the sidewinder as soon as you can .
Have fun cmdrs 07.

Just thought of something else if your struggling to dock go into options and have a fiddle around I still couldn't land now after two years of playing with the standard control scheme .

Put about 8 hours into it so far. Loving it.

Amazed with how much I need to reference forums or perform Google searches to find out what I need to do, but I guess i'm used to very linear games!

Struggling with the combat elements of the game and also reading the radar. That is a touch confusing. Hopefully this will disappear after a few more hours.

Now what game style do i pursue? :rolleyes:

I'm impressed by how well it plays on the DS4. I haven't noticed any tearing, but I'm too busy trying not to get blown up. :p

I am so jealous right now. I managed to link my FDev account and do the first training mission this morning as I woke up early, but have been at work since then. I still haven't got into Unbound Princess for the first time yet! ...oh well, only 2.5 hours left before I can leave :)

Yeah, it was a bit easier for Pc players as there wasn't half as many possibilities when Elite originally launched in 2015. We got to learn things gradually as they got added.

The radar is pretty tricky at first. Easiest way to fathom it out is:

Triangle in the middle is you with 2 lines showing what you can currently see. Then other objects/ships/things are circles which have lines coming up/below and a square/triangle icon.

The circle is where the thing is relative to you on a non-3d space (e.g. ignore up and down so target is ahead and left, behind and right etc).
The line, direction of line and length of line shows how vertically away something is.

So lets take an example:

389c2233487df0180c5a56077e9c2b65.jpg

The green object is fairly distant in front of you, slightly to the left and slightly up from your current position.
The white object is a medium way to your left, very slightly ahead of you and significantly below your current position.
The nearest red object is in sniffing distance directly ahead and right, very slightly below.
The far red object is behind, a bit below and a significant distance away.

Hopefully that makes sense.

As for colours and icons:
White = object like cargo canister
Green = Allied ship (often security forces)
Orange = Unknown ship
Red = Hostile ship
Blue = Winged ship

Triangle = Hardpoints deployed
Square = Hardpoints retracted

Solid icons = AI/NPC
Hollow icons = player
Flashing/distorting icons = Out of sensor range, something is there but you don't know what.

So using the same above example: There's cargo, 2 hostiles and 1 ally within sensor range screen.

Again hopefully this helps. If you want specific combat advice (or any other specific help) give me a shout. I know most things but the things I don't I can usually point people in the right direction.

I'm jealous too. My supplier will start sending the cd's tomorrow. So I will be able to play on thursday, I hope. Meanwhile I watch youtube to see some of the Thargoid sites that have been found last night. Lots of footage from inside the caves.

Only managed to get a quick hour in yesterday as I was late home from work.

Have booked the day off work tomorrow so I can see myself pulling an all-nighter tonight :D

A couple more pro tips...

1. Throttle Blue Zone is your friend. In Supercruise, full throttle until you are 7-10 seconds from your destination and then lower throttle into the blue zone and leave it there; your approach will be perfect.

2. If you're going bounty hunting, pick your fights wisely. High ranked NPCs are tough, even in small ships. Big ships will tear you to pieces with ease. Dont tackle wings solo unless you have a very powerful ship. Nav Beacons are usually pretty laid back. Resource Extraction Sites (especially high intensity) are tougher. You can poach bounties by following the system authority ships around and shooting what they shoot ***MAKE SURE YOU TARGET THEIR VICTIM AND SEE 'WANTED' BEFORE OPENING FIRE*** premature firing will turn the authorities hostile and they will kitten-stomp you. In the event of this happening...RUN.

3. Smuggling is a great way to earn cash. And one of the best ships in the game for smuggling is available pretty early - the Cobra MK3. Decent cargo capacity, plenty of internals and a very respectable jump range. Oh, and its really fast, enabling it to zip into the mailslot before getting scanned. Also great for running Rare Trade routes, and can be used for exploration. A snip at, what, 350k credits? Bargain.

4. Want to go into a conflict zone? Dont blame you. They are fun! But be wary - they can go south VERY fast. When you enter, move away from the fighting before picking your faction. If at any point you have more than 2 ships aggro'd, or more likely you wonder what on earth just happened to your shields and some of your hull, SCRAM. Discretion is absolutely the best part of honour.

5. Want to see a very pretty part of space, earn a bunch of credits and not travel a mind-numbing distance? Head to NGC 7822 - a nebula containing a cluster of O class stars, and a whole load of Black Holes. Get an Advanced Discovery Scanner and a Detailed Surface Scanner, and go on a lucrative sightseeing trip!

Good tips all. :)

My first impressions are positive, although i haven't had much time to play yet.

The visuals are nice, the Hotas 4 controls are tight, precise and well mapped, frame rate has been great so far (I'm yet to experience major drops) and the sound/music is nothing short of amazing.

On the technical side... Image quality is terrible. The screen tearing is so bad, that at times the image stutters, due to the refresh rate, not to mention the fact there's jaggies everywhere. I hope FDev adresses this issues by optimizing the game or by implementing some less taxing v-sync and anti-aliasing solutions.

Apart from the technical issues i've just mentioned (which are my only concerns), i'm loving the game so far.

Cheers!

The PS4 Pro is a winner!

I'm lovin' it on a 40in Samsung 7ft away set for Quality with no screen tearing so far. Wonder if screen size has something to do with it. I came online seconds after it went Live at 00:00 hrs EST then spent two hours relearning how to fly with the DS4 controller. Died twice and got a dormant bounty maybe from firing at a station while tring to figure out the buttons. Still not even close for decent combat yet but I can get around. Then 3 hours from a Sidewinder to an A-Rated Cobra Mk III with 3 million credits and haven't killed another ship. I'm moving towards an A-rated Dolphin then passenger missions for some serious coin. Still working the same system where the bounty is but they all like me so I don't get scanned.

Playing with the best HOTAS controllers on the PC for years I'm very impressed with the DS4 setup. Very fast, responsive and using the circle back button in the menus is much more efficient than doing the same with a HOTAS. Holding down a button for an extended period brings up a display of the available commands for it. Even the camera controls worked correctly the first time. I haven't bothered to change a single contol command from the default. Just need to keep playing to get the muscle memory up to speed. I have the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4 but haven't tried it yet.

The Sidewinder came with an SRV. Go figure. It's missing the mouse widget on/off for that center dot on the screen. Maybe plugging in a mouse would change this...or I haven't found where it was moved to.

I linked it with my main PC store account but have not been able to purchase anything yet. Bringing up both the PC and PS4 made setting up an identical Holo-Me done in 10 minutes. Now I'm awaiting the arrival of Mobius.

Frontier really got this one right. Only 40 more commands to relearn!

Regards

It is indeed Awesome - even on the PS4 standard. Took me a while to get used to the controller (coming from Mac with keyboard / Mouse) .... but got 2 ships and half a million credit, so getting there. The day off work has been well spent :)

I'll never play another game, so if anyone is in Mazatlan MX and wants a free ds4, there welcome to have mine. Hell I'd even start a whole new playstaion account just to get the cmdr name I want. I don't care if I loose the games I've already got. But I would also loose ED, so instead I just started a subaccount. Boom, got the cmdr name I wanted. With experience playing ED on any platform, I found utilzing the ds4 sucks, I have a few thousand hours flying real aircraft so the hotas worked out really really well. i just gotta learn the placement of the buttons and there various functions.

Just wanted to add that PC players have encountered screen tearing in some instances based on the display setting they are running. It varies from machine to machine, but some have had issues with this while looking around the cockpit if they use Windows Borderless mode, but have no such issues when running Fullscreen.

To make this even more confusing, some have the exact opposite results, with Fullscreen causing the tearing and Borderless Windowed mode resolving the issue.

This kind of points to the possibility others here have suggested, that your display type and configuration could be playing a role in whether or not you see this problem. I am running my PC out via HDMI 2.1 to a SONY W900 55" LCD Panel @ 1080p 60hz and am not seeing any tearing issues with 2.3.10 (latest version), with a EVGA FTW3 1080ti GPU.

I would say that there is an underlying issue with the game that remains unresolved, since the problem comes and goes but has been around for well over a year now.

There's a toggle setting in the Options to put the dot in your HUD or not. Don't think you need a mouse just for that. I forget what the option's text is but Xbone has one - I think all platforms have it.

Another tip for those having trouble landing: You can cancel your request to land if timer is starting to run out. Just don't cancel while inside the (big) stations. ;)

Some additional comments. The show mouse widget which puts a centering dot on the view screen when in flight (excellent for precise maneuvering especially for big ships in the mailslot) doesn't appear to be available on the PS4. It was located in the mouse controls section of the PC version which is not there in the controller options. I wonder where it is on the Xbox.

I've never seen ED screen tearing on the PC but then mine was designed for Adobe/Avid/Cubase software for audio/video production in a studio environment. It always runs smooth with two Nvidia cards in SLI mode. Of course that doesn't resolve network lags, dropouts or venting whenever Frontier takes away some feature per balance!

My Samsung 40in shows ED in quality mode running at 1920x1080 at 60p on the PS4 Pro. It is very smooth and detailed. Still we are talking TV and a quality 27in monitor such as the Asus PB287Q which can go to 2560x1440 is sharper even running in 1920x1080. Still it is not a fair comparison unless Asus has a 40in monitor. At 1080 it is excellent on the PS4 Pro and more exciting on such a large screen with 7.1 surround sound.

There are lots of subtle changes from the PC version to the PS4. They really add to the experience. Then again there will be issues as when I logged into the PS4 my Cobra went from the hanger to the surface, then back to the hangar before giving me control. Who knows...maybe that was a feature and not a bug (old timers will know the satire)! We'll see. :)
