Hm, good question. But at the location on the picture, they are collecting material. Because the "beam" goes from wreckage into the "mouth" of the scavenger. Like the thargoid scout ship "loot" the barnacle ...

I suspect they may be collecting and neutralising mycoid virus. If that is the case then perhaps the flowership Thargons are collecting some form of venom from the barnacles which they then can use as a weapon? That might explain why UP/UA cause "toxic damage" to our ships and stations. Hypothesis- the UA/UP/barney fireflies are the Thargoid equivalent of mycoid.

Congrats!

I'm hoping to do the same in the next week. I have Martuuk's Soontills in tow (+ 13 more for a bit of profit), and 27 Unknown fragments. I have no modular components, though - and I'm under no illusion that getting them all in a single session is hopelessly optimistic.

I had MTs coming out of my ears at one stage-data delivery mission reward on ceos-sothis-ceos loop when Fed ranking

Nope its either pinwheel or triangulum galaxy as it matchs both (pinwheel being the most prominent and just south of andromeda and also the lizard people from andromeda in the original elite knew thargoids from the galaxy close by)
Triangulum then since I believe that's in-game

Here is my 2.5 cents. The map is Thargoid space. It co-exists with our space but it is out of phase. We can't see it. I wonder if it exists only in witch space and when we make a hyper space jump we are essentially taking a short cut through their space.

Perhaps there is a way to overlay their galaxy map on ours? Perhaps there are even certain points at which these two galaxy's join.

Oh i like this. Sounds reasonable. And we enter from Raxxla!!

Hello folks, I've been away on vacations for a week, what's the reason for my favorite thread doubling its size all of a sudden?

Okay, I know I'm thinking too hard about this, but I find it compelling (it doesn't mean it's right though, I know, but it's fun!)

For me, the logic of combining them - particularly via bitwise XOR boolean logic - is because the way we get unknown links is by passing a UA and UP into the thing in the side chamber, thus manufacturing a UL. That chamber needs the two to make the third one so the three items are already intrinsically linked together - the UL is a product of a UA and a UP - what's not known is what operation is being performed.

So then we have the labelling on the new spectrogram, echoing some of the labelling on the UP spectrogram.

If we interpret the labels as binary with least significant bit on the right, then

UA = 001 = 1, UL = 010 = 2, UP = 011 = 3.

Starting with arithmetic, since we know that we need a UA(1) & UP(3) to produce a UL(2), then we just need to figure out a way to combine 1 & 3 to get 2 - which is easy:

UP - UA = UL because 3-1 = 2.

Also:
UP = UL + UA

But it seems a bit odd to have to subtract in one case, but add in another.

This is where bitwise XOR comes in, which also has the added bonus of not having to assign the bit patterns any particular number either - they're just 001, 010 and 011.

So, as we know, to make a UL you need a UA(001) and UP(011). This is a bitwise XOR:

001 ^ 011 = 010

Which then implies that to make a UP(011) you need a UA and a UL:
001 ^ 010 = 011

And to make a UA you need a UP(011) and a UL:
011 ^ 010 = 001

The new spectrogram clearly suggests that there is a functional relationship between all three, with the UL sitting in the middle (and, not least because it's called a 'link'!) - which is why I'm suggesting that ULs are somehow two halves of the UA and UP joined together - providing the bits that neither shares (and then backed up by the fact that the link appears to react to both when dropped in space) - in order to act as a 'bridge' (or 'link') between them - that is, quite literally a definition of XOR.

I'm not saying there's anywhere we can actually manufacture UAs and UPs, just that the fact we can manufacture ULs from UAs and UPs, and the way they're labelled, suggests they're all a combination built from the same set of two distinct pieces in different combinations.

And this actually leads us to be able to make a prediction about whatever '| - -' is, if we are indeed intended to interpret that also as a labelled 'thing':

Whatever it is, is unique: it doesn't have any parts common to UAs, UPs or ULs - and the Unknown Device would appear to fit that bill.

Mmmm. Do we know that UA and UP are both necessary for the UL to appear? Are the UL being manufactured in that side chamber or just pulled off a storage rack (this sounds more likely to me).
If you're correct in that 1-- indicates the Unknown Device (and we were told that the UP is the key, i.e. usage instructions), then how does the UD fit into the UP sonogram lower left quadrant? What is it supposed to indicate?

The lave radio reaction was impressive. Anyone tried other things? Lavian Brandy maybe?

I mean, we need to see how it reacts to other "alien" objects and technology. If it's just a purge or "intruder alert" kind of reaction. Anyone testing that yet? We need to exclude that possibility.

I'll chime in here to say that I tried depositing other items in the chutes - like their own tech samples - and it didn't take. There's a reason the machine accepted the Guardian relic and went ape-poop over it.

Ah that is useful evidence of which we were unaware! Now it needs to be independently confirmed & we may have a new theory...

(or rather support for Dreamstates theory)

This! This has a major implications to the Xenopolitical landscape. We need confirmation and video of the exact same procedure being done with other things, particularly "human" things as well.
This is evidence we lack and that we need.

My wingmate and I were carrying an UA and unknown technology samples when we entered the chamber first and got the three ULs from the dispensers.

OK, so I put some conscious thought into "What could be affecting my chances at a UP?" tonight, and although I'm not holding this up as a "how to get a UP" i'm presenting it as at least a data point (and a hectic one at that!)

I went over Factabulous' post about planets and noted the distances, which could be entirely coincidental... but they were all at a middling range, close, but not too close for the planet's size. Having spent countless hours at some of those planets previously, I decided to look at what I was doing.

I'd usually go fairly close to the planet, as I got sick of looking away for a moment and drifting too far away (even at 30km/s, which is very likely with ammonia worlds with close orbit moons).

Tonight I noticed that, when you have a target celestial body on the scanner, there's three "colours" for the distance. Grey is the norm, until you get very close (very close being closer than when it appears as "the nearest body" in the bottom left). At some point it will turn orange. When you get even closer, that turns red.

I've been usually going in and out of the red/orange/grey zone adjusting my speeds and doing loops (mostly to keep the game timing out, ironically, which happens pretty often for me). Paying attention to that, I decided "OK, I'll drop to 30km/s in the orange zone and wait. 15 minutes and three USS later (I dropped out at each one regardless of if it was correct type or not) and 15m later I have a UP. This is after spending 2h last night in the red zone and getting nothing.

EDIT: Oh,, the hectic-ness was that a pirate spawned in SC just before the USS spawned. I angled myself so the pirate crashed into the planet while trying to manouver behind me. Got into the USS, there was my UP and me, in my explorer-kitted Asp, when an Elite Clipper pirate dropped in. Just got out with no blue rings of shield left.

tl;dr maybe you need to be in the orange zone for a UP USS to spawn? Which may have an impact on UA USS too. Either way, I now have all three artefacts... off to get me some lightshow.

Did FD state that at some point ? Do you have a reference/quote ?

Because I'd rather be sure than dive in blind in the tinfoil.

As an aside :

  • We do know that the UP uses octal numbers
  • We do know that barnacles are related to UP/UA
  • UA draw/monitor our ships
  • Barnacles extract usefull materials from the ground
  • Barnacles can be found in nebulas
  • UP points to Merope5c, UA points to Merope
  • UP measure planets using merope 5c as unit, and measure distance from Col 70 Sector FY-N C21-3
  • UA is found in the shell ~120 to 150 lyr from Merope, UP anywhere inside near Amonia.
  • All but once Thargoid facility are not operational.
  • Criters seems to scavenge the operational one.
  • First thargoid encounter was a scouting party that was repeled by INARA with the mycoid virus.

To me the whole thing looks like :

  • UA/UP are scouting/monitoring probes
  • The barnacles are seeded automated mining machines
  • Thargoids like nebulas for some reason
  • The new spectrogram contains references to two systems. The mystery so far (UP/UA) made reference to two systems : Merope and Col 70 Sect FY-N C21-3

To me, the whole thing makes me think of :

Some hundreds years ago, Thargoids sent a scouting party, or prospection party to nebulas in our area.
They start deploying von-neumann bio-machinery to establish an outpost and further infrastructures.
Things go south with the pink apes, ending up with the mycoid virus cripling most of the installations.
Some of the hosts are cripled but not dead, after scavenging stuff and a long recovery period, operation
of the von Neumann machineis resumed, UA are deployed for monitoring and UP for mapping potential thargformable amonias.

UL ? IMO the UL is the one used to call home...
