The way forward for ED?

I'm confident they will do a good job.
Then again I also think they've done a pretty good job with Horizons and the various updates this has brought, sure things could be better but to fixate on that seem to me to rather ignore how much we've gained.

I'm glad you are confident, I for one am not. I found the ambiguous way they sold Horizons "planetary landings" really dodgey mate and TBH most of (if not ALL) of the content produced to date is a staple in almost any major game/IP in this genre and should have been in place at launch. SO, I for one will wait and watch. I dont plan to hold my breath :)

Landing on planets, one of the scant good additions in Horizons, has not been worth the £30 - 40 or so i paid.

True, we wont fully know how much we got for our dubloons until 2.4 hits but, looking back at the season as a whole, I am fully prepapred to be disappointed once more.

How much it would be worth?

Ohhh, I am holding my breath to wait to name one similar game in this genre. With such level of planetary landings.

There are a few comments significantly financed based. Are you really saying that Horizons was not worth a few quid? Get real. Maybe you need to see just what a few quid will buy entertainment wise that will last years without being repeated.

I'm NOT quibbling about price per expansion, its quality of delivered expansion and the spurious description regarding content.

Re-read my post and adjust yours. Its amazing how people mis-read or misinterpret.

I didn't misread or misinterpret. You claim that there's precedence for having planetary landings in recent game in this genre, at that level complexity, details, etc. It is up to you to show evidence for that claim.

Or you might as well not answer to my call and say I don't understand you. Your choice really.

Does anyone else have a sense of dread regarding the upcoming change in the way FD are delivering "content" ?

Nope, don't see the problem. FD intends to expand the ED universe for years to come. That is all I need to know.
The delivery method is not important at all.

I was surprised at how thin on the ground horizons was, and was slated when I raised a question about refunds (lets face it planetary landings are hardly finished..). <not really needed>

Not really needed?
Speak for yourself. :) I think planetary landings are great. To me the experience of putting my spaceship down on a life size planet is awe inspiring.
Of course I want to land on atmospheric planets and dive into the upper layer of gas giants, but FD always said that was still a long way off.
I also would like a bit more variety in planetary base styles and designs and a bit more gameplay like planetary mining, NPC in land vehicles etc.

FD will get around to that kind of stuff eventually no doubt.

"NOT REALLY NEEDED" was a mods addition as original wording proved too close to the mark.

VR user here

Horizons has been one of the best expansions I have ever bought. Every update brings new fun things to do in VR. The only downer has been the beigification of the universe but that is known by FD.

I am aware of stuff happening in space but I am too busy smashing trenches in my performance enhanced Sidey and wreaking alien sites in my SRV to care!

That single outlay of money will set you good for years to come. From the get go, E: D was always a work in progress. You and everyone else to date has been part of its development. A few quid for that content can only be measuredin the grand scheme of things, which is several years in the making and is and will always be a great piece of entertainment for a few quid.

If atmosphere landings and the ability to at least walk around my ship for now come with the rest of horizon then I think the £20 I paid for it will be worth it.

I'm a firm believer of the "£1 paid = 1 hour of enjoyment" concept and Elite has definitely been worth the price I paid for it.

I would say, without a shadow of a doubt that Horizons so far has not been value for money.

If you compare the quality and content of Horizons to something like The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine, an expansion that cost significantly less than Horizons and delivered so much more.
I'm not just talking by a bit, but a lot. It's got 10 times the content of Horizons (and that's conservative) at less than half the price.

The developer is roughly the same size as FD before anyone plays the "But FD is a small company" card.

In a vacuum I can see why some people would think Horizons was good value but compared to other games it's expansion has been pretty crappy value for money IMO

FD knew people wouldn't fall for the same trick twice and that's the reason they ditched that model, nothing else. There was no altruism in the choice to ditch that model it was "We took money for something, spent it on other stuff, failed to deliver quality content for the money we took and we know we can't pull the same stunt twice as most people aren't that stupid" .

P.s. It wasn't a few quid, it cost £40 at launch did it not?

I'm saying the season as a whole wasnt - yet - worth the price I paid, yes. So i can land on a barren planet and drive about. Doing what? Apart from shooting a few rocks, nothing. What else of Horizons do I use? Engineers, no. Multicrew, no. Avator creater, well yes i did create an avator once.

So, all in all, yes i am saying for me personally (if i need to point that out) Horizons has not been worth the price I paid for it (2.4 still to come though of course). Maybe if i had bought it later at the recently discounted price I would feel it good value for money. Sorry if my opinion doesn't match yours but there it is.

I don't have any dread. I am happy with the price and content of Horizons.

I am not a content devourer

I play a few hours a week inbetween life and stuff

I have fun when I play

I am intrigued as to what the next season will bring (aliensies, shipsies, local things for local people...)

Have you bought a Beluga or a Dolphin? Have you done any passenger missions? Any surface missions (scan / scavenge / destroy)? Have you enjoyed the 1000LYR course plotting and the star filtering?

When you drop below the headline features and into the QoL stuff, are you sure you would take a refund and go back to pre-Horizons? Or is there a price point that would be "vfm"? After all it is on the FDev site for £13.39 right now I think? But it is nearly a year old too...

I've used the route-plotter. I'm sorry, you clearly dont agree with my view but that's life eh.

And you never know 2.4 might change my mind!

Kicinski also revealed that The Witcher 3 was developed over the course of 3.5 years by a team of professionals that "know how to develop games efficiently." A total of 240 in-house staff worked on The Witcher 3 (most were Polish, but a "considerable" number were foreigners), while 1,500 people in all around the world were involved in the game's production.

QoL stuff was also in the base game, you didn't need horizons for those elements, just the headline features.
