I found my unkown probe [howto]

Hey everyone,

Finally, I found my unknown probe : here is how I did it ...

1) Google "how to find unknown probe elite dangerous"

2) Read / watch / try stuff you got in the google results pages. Quickly realize a lot of it might be outdated. Finally find a recent video by Obsidian Ant on the subject and just do as he says.

In a nutshell, jump to Pleiades Sector KC-U B3-1, circle at minimum supercruise speed around the ammonia world (Pleiades Sector KC-U B3-1 B i.e. planet 8) and ... wait keeping an eye on the Navigation tab (press "1" to see it).

I waited during 5 hours (thanks Netflix !) and an USS finally popped up (Degraded emissions threat 2). Disengage near it, deploy your cargo scoop, get close and voila !

Next step : use those two in the T sites and see what happens.

To FD : very boring gameplay IMHO (I just had to press "1" then watch the screen doing nothing during 5 hours ... *sigh*).

If there is no better way to do this, I suggest you try to make it slightly better. Anything will do really : I'd have more fun watching wet paint drying than this TBH.

Good luck to all looking for their own unknown probe : it is doable, but do you really need to do it when there are already many vids describing whet they do in the alien sites on Youtube ? I let you decide.

I'd hardly call the method viable if it took 5 hours. In olden times, back when free-floating UPs were first discovered, the one I found took 5-10 minutes to find, with no special method. I just flew up to one of the known spawn systems and cruised around the ammonia world until I found one. Same thing happened when I found my second one when Hyperdictions first started.

Don't throttle all the way down. Throttle up and fly around it normally. USS beacons will almost never spawn if you throttle down fully. I got my UP in that system in just 30 minutes. Last time it took 30 seconds. Of course, your mileage may vary, but 5 hours is an indicator not to throttle down. :3

I was orbiting at an average distance of 14 mm from the center of the planet in the RO-Q-something system for over half an hour, maintaining a speed of less than 500 kps, got nothing at all. Are we 100% sure that this orbit method on the Canonn thread is really the way to go? Just because it works after several hours doesn't mean that's the ideal way.

I finally got mine by staying 1 Ls out, facing nebula.

About 6 hours yesterday staying closer to planet and jumping to other system and back, & blah blah blah.

This morning did 2 passes 1 ls out at normal cruise speed, and I had it in 5 minutes.

I parked at structure with 1 UP & 2 UA's. Ready for tonight after my evening "meds" :)

I spent 3 hours yesterday, and 3 hours today looping round a known spawn point, occasionally dropping back to the main menu and back in again. Nada. Ho hum.

12mm from planet. minimum SC speed in orbit. 5 -10 minutes max before getting a threat 2 USS.

I was at 25mm from the planet according to my screenshots : how did you learn the right distance ?
Assuming you're right, that is : do you have any evidence of this spawn rate ?

Not calling you a liar here, honestly, but I just tried the 12mm thing and it didn't work for me : after 14 mn, zero spawn. Are you positive your method works ? Or did you just get lucky and assume everyone will be ?

Several reports of people getting the USS right off the bat exist, but many more of CMDRs waiting for HOURS are out there. If this is pure RNG luck on your part, good for you but it doesn't change the fact that this game mechanic is deeply flawed in my eye.

As always, as soon as I think of giving up, check the forums one last time, after watching Youtube vids an hour ago.

My UP spawned around the plants Obsidian suggested. I was at half throttle, and made a by-pass of the planet and turned back towards it at 12.7 mm away.

Grabbed 2 last night at Pleiades Sector KC-U B3-1, planet 8. Supercruised 11-12mm from planet keeping speed between 200 and 350. In each situation an unknown probe USS spawned within 10 mins or less.

Last night I was going round the same planet. You were obviously favoured by RNGeesus (blessed be his name!).

I went to the same location on Tuesday, cruised around the planet at about 25mm and after about 10 minutes one showed up. I scooped it into my regular cargo bay and it started to eat my SRV hanger, so I logged out as I didn't have any more time to game. I'm hoping when I log back in tonight that it picks up where it left off, rather than eating up my ship over the last two days ......... :/

Where to get a UA??

I had no problem finding one following this how to. Have fun CMDR :)

The Probe, it's not really yours ;)

there is a post buried deep in one one the canonn threadnaughts, explaining the problem with speed. if you get below, you get basically blind for 1-2 minutes. 5 hours speak for getting to slow in between. my mileage is 5-25 minutes per UP, and i have scooped 3 in the last two days, and around 15 in total. i think that number was: do not get below 600 km/s, and always stay in the zone of influence, do not search where the hud shows deep space or a different body in the left hand corner.

anyways, i share the opinion that waiting for something to spawn is only good for my email inbox or doing my sweet duties as a moderator on these forums.

75% throttle at an orbital range of 10-15Mm seems to work for me most of the time. I have had problems in recent months with USS not spawning when I am winged up. Now I only look for them 'unwinged.'
