Things it feels like I'm missing here...

Hey all, loving the game, but have a few questions that hopefully people can help with!

1. Chaff 1/10 - How do I get more chaffs? Seems to suggest I can pack 10/10 but I only ever get 1/10. What am I missing here?
2. Trespassing - How can I tell where I can land, before (as happened earlier) I get a message telling me to turn around and leave and then ultimately get killed trying to do so? Is there a way to know before I enter final approach to these places? What am I missing here?
3. Dropping cargo - Usually I get scanned by pirates and they leave me alone because I don't have anything, but last night one pirate didn't bother to scan me, he just said to "drop 1500 credits of cargo or die" - briefly wondered how the heck I'd do that in the 30 seconds or so before he opened fire, so decided to go #fullhansolo as it was a boring conversation anyway and took him out first (my first combat without the feds doing the killing and me tagging the bounties)... but it did raise the question - how do I drop cargo? What am I missing here?

Hope you can help!

2. Trespassing: You were told to ask permission for docking when you approached the station (but you were probably busy :) ). In the left 'contacts' tab chose the station and request docking when within 7.5 km to avoid kills (there is a demo for docking you should probably do).
3. Cargo can be jettisoned from the right panel inventory - chose the item and it should give you the option. Try it out before you next need to talk to pirates :) Also get better at the interdiction game to avoid talking to them at all!

1, 1/10 means one chaff armed, 10 chaff in stock.

2, You need to request docking in any station or platform. If you get the docking permission granted, the traffic controller will assign you ship to a docking platform number. This nummer will be show on screen, and you need to find the correct platform number in the station. This will be a hologram hoovering above the correct platform.

If you get a trespassing warning, you are hoovering, or are to close, near the wrong docking platform.

always approach with you ships bow facing the backwall of the Starport, or towards the buildings on a outpost. Or look at the blast shields, they should always be behind you when you dock.

3, Dropping cargo, you can do this with your right systems panel, go to inventory, cargo, and select the item you want to vent into space. Its just a matter of doing before you have the muscle memory so you can do it fast enough so the pirate doesn't shoot you. Against a real player, i suggest you communicate first, if you are willing to give the pirate his loot, tell him first over the comms that you cooperate, then vent your cargo.

if it takes to long, without any comms chatter, the pirate might start to attack you, and take the commodities with force.

Hope this helps,

Ah ha! I was missing things! Thanks all!

1. Is there a secret to reloading your chaffs or is it automatically done?
2. For this particular trespassing, I was approaching a planet and wasn't actually close enough to ask permission (I assume planets are still the 7500 or less distance like space stations?). Had the message and then turned to pull away from the planet but they sent what looked on my scanner to be a small fleet of ships lol.
3. Can pirates tell (npc or pc) if you use a kill scanner on them? If I'm going to fight these pirates when they threaten me, I'd like a few extra credits if possible but I'd probably not want to telegraph it if they can tell I'm using a kill scanner on them! ;)

Some planetary bases are actually high security I believe and won't let you land (took me ages to work this out when I got Horizons). It tells you somewhere. Probably in navigation and system map. Can't quite recall.

Yes that's it lol. :)

Some background... I'd been sent to this system to deliver some wine to a settlement, but on entering the system there were two planets and a space station on one and a settlement on the other. Nothing had the same name as the settlement I was meant to deliver to. Figured I perhaps needed to scan the system, I spent ages trying to figure out how to use my scanner on a nav beacon near the sun but couldn't figure out how to make it work (and I got attacked by a pirate whilst sitting around fiddling with my controls). Then tried to figure out if I could buy a system map - I couldn't! ;) So instead I thought I'd head for the settlement (as I'd already been to the space station to drop off some other stuff for a different mission) for a change of pace and because I don't think I'd landed on one since taking off on the first planet. Then, the rest played out as above. It may well have had the ++ next to it - I'll remember that for next time! :)

1) as long as you have chaff (same goes for anything else using ammo, btw.) in stock, the reloading is automatic. When you run out (i.e. are down to 0/0), you'll have to reload in a station that offers restock. For some ammo types (not chaff, though - IIRC) you can also reload vie synthesis from materials, i.e. craft the ammo on your ship, using stuff you picked up from planetary surfaces.

2) May have been a settlement with security. Those have big guns and short tempers.

3) Not the KWS, but scan in general - but scanning them has no effect on their behaviour.

Nav Beacon: Drop out near it, you should see a white target (not the amber one), target that (and point ship at it), and after a few seconds you should see the rest of the system. Or get an Advanced Discovery Scanner, much nicer ;)

Edit: White is for things, the amber is the waypoint that leads you to the thing, but when you first drop out they tend to superimpose, so you think you're targeting, but are not. Maybe!

Ah ok that makes sense re the nav point. It was the orange circle I was looking at. My display had an egg looking thing on it so I figured I was looking at the right thing but perhaps not. How do I find the white target to click on?

Nav beacon is the egg - there should be a control for 'target thing in front of me', I'd hit that. Or look in the contacts panel (left tabs) and see what you have targeted there (and you can select the nav beacon here as well - but not in the Nav panel as that's the amber version ). Pretty sure the egg is showing in the system scanner (bottom middle) as a white blob?

Edit: The 'white' only shows when you point at it and target - it's a difficult to see grey colour otherwise, easy to miss.

HAVE I CONFUSED YOU ENOUGH YET :D

well the basic discovery scanner gives you 500ls range so you dont have money for an advanced i feel the 500ls range is good for starters.

Confusion is something I've got bags of right now! hehe

But I'm loving the game, finding my feet and everyone is so cool to help out answering questions.

Hopefully I'll get a good session in this weekend and either save for a diamondback explorer to get started doing that (once I've figured out the whole scanning thing of course, otherwise I'll be the galaxy's worst explorer ever! ;)) or keep saving and hope for something bigger.

Right now I'm doing a mix of mission running and stopping off at resource extraction sites to help the feds with pirate killing. I usually go into the "High" rated resource sites - how do "Hazardous" ones compare? Do they still have feds or not?

hazardous have no cops so youre on your own.

hazardous have no cops so youre on your own.

Ouch, figured that'd be the case. I've not seen many pirates in the "High" resource sites that aren't Dangerous or above so I may steer clear then - at least until I'm in a better ship and have more experience.

Are there people that actually try and mine in those areas? Sounds like you'd have a tough time.

Most sane people stay well clear of resource extraction sites to extract resources. :)

lol - I thought that was the only place you could mine. Haven't tried mining yet, but it was on my list to try as I fumble my way through the early days in ED. :)

So what other options are there for mining? Or is there a ship/build that'd let you mine whilst also giving you some teeth to fight off pirates?

You can mine anywhere in the ring. You might get one or two dodgy npcs sniffing around wherever you drop, so don't go in defenseless.

I accepted a "kill a Goliath" mission yesterday, that was definitely a mistake. I flew there with a friend, both of us noobs and not really prepared. First we thought we would have to destroy a ship, but it was a ground target. He landed too close to it and got destroyed, I just managed to escape...
