General / Off-Topic I think we need another thread about American politics.

Destroy the evil in each of the men at the time of their childhood. And give a decent life to each person. And all the problems of violence on the earth will no longer exist

:)

Things can be much more better, if we heed some problems, what we let to stir this far. I can agree with that. But what you describe is just way too utopian.

Wait... what???

Trump doesn't actually write those books. He talks to someone, who makes notes, and then tries to use those notes to create a decent book, then when that book is written they put Donald Trumps name on it in order to sell it.

I was going to respond to that surprising and fact-free post, but you seem to have covered it.
There were highlights I'd have liked to mention, like the unique accusation that Trump knows Facts.
(That one was so good.)

Vox goes through the sordid feud.

I do believe it was you that predicted that?

I did, but it was Jeremy Cliffe (I think) who first mentioned that Merkel was gaining politically from bashing Trump in Germany. Then her main political rival (Martin Schulz) also started, ironically leaping to her defense. As we've seen from Macron, standing up to Trump is a superb way to make oneself look like an international statesman.

The only international leaders Trump appears to have on his side at this point are Vladimir Putin, Erdogan of Turkey, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, and Theresa May (yeah the UK are in good company there). Of these nations only the UK is actually likely to have the interests of the USA in mind when Washington needs something, the "friendship" of the others is worse than useless.

Whether one hates or loves Obama one can't deny that he was very popular internationally, and completely reversed the damage done by GW Bush to the international reputation of the USA. In a globalized world having your leader carry weight in other countries is an extremely valuable asset.

This asset has been sacrificed. And why? It wasn't sacrificed for necessary defense, to preserve US economic interests, or to help a single American achieve something necessary. It was sacrificed because Donald Trumps ego couldn't be contained. Never before has so much been sacrificed for so little in return.

Norway annoyed me by awarding Obama the Nobel Peace Prize before he had actually done anything - it was basically awarded because he wasn't Bush.

(Didn't stop Obama's ambassador threatening the country with repercussions if Noway didn't buy USofA jets though.)

Of course this is utopian but with the evolution in a few hundred years, who knows ? However, it is true that ED does not give me much hope :)

Exactly, someone posted a link to an article looking at the cost / capability etc of the F35 vs SAAB JAS39 Gripen which I happily poach here:

;)

Finland is facing the same situation as Norway was, and our Defence minister is a nationalist tool who seems determined to buy an American fighter no matter the cost. The best fighter on offer is the Rafale, and the most affordable (while still good) is Gripen. A hi-lo mix of those would be the best.

The Rhino (Superhornet) is seriously meh, with nothing much going for it. The Eurofighter Typhoon is a dedicated interceptor, not a true multirole as we need. There are only two good choices on offer, and sending our money to the US would be insane.

Yes, the Nobel Committee simply snubbed Bush, it obviously wasn't about the new guy.

As much as I would love you guys to buy our stuff, I would say that the Gripen for a country like Finland, Norway or Denmark would be the right airplane. Why? because you don't need the capabilities the F35 offers, also when Finland got the F/A 18's it was not the correct fighter in my opinion, but who am I to make these evaluations. F16 was good choice, the F35 not so much.

To be fair the F35 seems to be an on-going disaster.

Anyway...

Right now this is on: https://www.c-span.org/video/?429381-1/former-fbi-director-comey-say-president-obstructed-justice

Currently discussing the document from Comey that was released/leaked* yesterday.

* Not sure about leak as it was on an official US Govt website.

That's right, not leaked. He asked for his statement released to the public.

He's being interviewed now. Interesting stuff. There's not likely to be any kind of "smoking gun" from all this, but Trump going toe to toe with someone who diligently keeps detailed, extensive notes of all meetings is BAD for Trump. If I were a Trump aide, I'd nail his thumbs to something heavy to keep him off Twitter. When it comes to trust and who is more credible - people tend to trust the person with the most detail, not the guy who's tweeting a stream of consciousness and retracting/flip-flopping.

From what I can see, Trump Jnr is stepping in as the proxy Tweeter to attack Comey.

Nothing revealed until now, can be damaging to Trumpy not one bit, he just display himself as someone who need to understand what he is dealing with, he hopefully learned his lesson :)

From what I've heard, the bar for legal obstruction is actually very high, so quite likely there's nothing there yet - in what was said in the public session at least.

It does show incredibly bad judgement though. The president calling the FBI director into a one-on-one meeting so he can 'privately hope' Comey drops an investigation into one of his own campaign advisors and National Security Advisor? And then firing him? The result of which - we now have an independent Special Counsel investigating the whole affair. That worked out well..

Not disagreeing with that.

Not to derail the thread too much, but why? The F/A 18 and F35 both seem to be very capable aircraft. What would the F16 have offered that the other two don't?
