So THIS just happened. Thanks, Frontier!

I realize it isn't Frontier's fault, but this server lag sucks. Yesterday was a little bad, but this is the worst I've experienced so far. And no, it's not on my end. I have a typical 60mbps cable connection and the servers typically run smooth, this was just a bad time.

I realized something was wrong on FSD approach. The station was orbiting extremely quickly around the planet, but visually it wasn't smooth. It was jumping all over the screen and I had a hard time catching up to it. Finally when I caught up to it and tried to enter the bay I ran in to a metal railing around the bay entrance (why the hell was that there?!), and as soon as I tried to back up and correct my approach this happened. Lol. Enjoy my misery.

Thankfully I had no cargo and wasn't in the middle of a mission. So this little mishap only cost me about 3,500 credits.

Let this be a lesson to other Commanders. If you're in the middle of a mission or hauling valuable cargo and you hit a lag spike, just sit tight until it's gone or relog on the server.

You might want to consider switching over to SOLO mode.

The latency/ping time I see to the Frontier servers is ridiculous... On average about 500ms from here in Northern California!

Why this is so high, I have no idea. ?? Especially because Elite runs on (AWS) aka Amazon Web Services, which is supposed to be region specific by user location in order to avoid things like high latency etc.

I don't see this issue with any other online game I play, so I really have no clue as to why I am seeing such high pings consistently.

But since I primarily play the game in SOLO mode, I am not effected at all by this stuff. Only time it becomes a problem is when I am involved in the latest BETA for the game and am playing in OPEN with all the other testers. Then I often find the gameplay to be down right awful compared to the Solo experience.

High latency will produce precisely the kind of LAG and other issues you are experiencing. Not to mention whatever additional overhead might be involved in having to run through PSN as well. ?? There are also likely to be teething problems with the PS4 servers for a time yet. They could get worse before they get better. Another reason to seriously consider Solo as you build up your character. Solo is still online of course, but minus a lot of the P2P overhead found in the Open and Private Group modes, allowing it to run smoother.

Most of us who have been playing the game for any length of time tend to switch over to Solo for any super important missions or tasks, such as Community Goals, just to avoid issues like you encountered. Not to mention, you are free from griefers and the like, which may or may not be a big issue on the PS4 version. It can be on the PC for sure.

Ahhh you've met the "toast rack" :D

So the station hopping in SC is not uncommon for fast orbiting stations, they orbit at different speeds, and the fast ones can lag like that sadly.
However once in normal space it didn't look laggy, and to be fair, your approach was terrible... [where is it] you can not fly through the wires in the rack, and needed to pull a loop a good couple of ship lengths further away.
Obviously it's much safer to give a few hundred metres, outside the holo-advertising at least, to line up straight into the mail slot (keeping to the green side is etiquette), and then feed through the toast rack smoothly.

I was in solo play when this happened.

And yea, my approach was crappy but I knew I was lagging and was just trying to get inside and dock. I couldn't tell what side of the station the bay entrance was on.

So yea, the whole thing was a mess. I just wanted to get inside to dock and save my location.

If you save and quit outside a station when you reload you'll still be outside the station, it saves your position when you drop from supercruise hence why you sometimes get a server error if you cant connect to the server.

Doesn't help your problem last night but worth knowing in future :)

I just keep getting random disconnects all the time when ever I try and do anything that requires communication from the server. Even in solo mode I get them. Gave up in the end playing on the PS4 and gone back to the PC version. It is far more stable.

It's not my cables or WiFi as I have checked them and tested other online games with the PS4. It is the servers at fault.

so last night it took me some 45 mins to reach the space station I was heading for whilst in supercruise!!! i dropped out of supercruise and back again to see if this was a bug, but my journey just continued to crawl. i managed to get some work done whilst i waited but I hope this is not a regular thing!!!!

How far away from you was it? The game is a 1:1 scale model of the universe, so if the station is a long way off, it will take some time. (Google for Hutton Orbital if you don't believe me).

It's always worth checking the station you're heading to to see how far out it is (go to the galaxy map from a mission and then press R1 - I think - a couple of times to select the system view. You'll start to get a feeling about how long different distances take.

Thanks for the advice and yes it was the Hutton Orbital that i was heading to :) a real learning curve for me. Even though I have played on the PC as a very casual gamer I have never really used the map to check this info, but going forward i will be!

You mean there are still some who genuinely don't know that Hutton Orbital is a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong way in supercruise?

Another one... :p

Well, Hutton Orbital is unique. But stations orbiting a secondary star 100 kls out are rather common.

PS4 has had zero issues for me.

Remember to always check the distance from the star in the system map. distances of 100K ls and more are not uncommon. I found a 400k Ls one last night, but I was happy enough with the payout to take the mission.

Hutton Orbital is special though. At 0.22Ly you'll be in supercruise for 90 minutes before getting there :) (still, it's worth it #forthemug <g>)

I can attest to the portal being hard to find unless you drop out in front of it. Recon it gets easier with experience, but for now it's kind of sucks. Having two portals would really make it intersting and easier.

If you target the station, the hologram version of it has arrows pointing to the slot. Head that way.

Also the station slot is always facing towards whatever it is orbiting. So if you approach the planet, and fly between it and the station then turn to face the station there's a good chance the slot will be in front of you when you exit supercruise.

Hop on over to the bug reports forum. This is not a server or "lag" issue, all the moment to moment gameplay is local in solo.

And welcome to the toast rack.

Is that true? Because I've been checking out a few bits and pieces on the game trying to figure out wether I wanna buy it and I watched this video where this obsidian ant guy had serious issues with it playing on ps4 https://youtu.be/y9CndYlE1sc I came here to find out wether it's something that's actively being improved, I guess not lol. So what's the deal, is it a problem or isn't it, and is it being addressed or isn't it?
