Elite Dangerous Destructoid Review - 9/10

Aren't most console games these days just the same game they released last year, but with either an incremental number. Or simply removed the number entirely? :p

I'd give ED a 9/10.

1000s of hours of fun, for around £60 now.
Has a few issues, but nothing major.

My only gripe is the game is to easy these days. Got all this Engineers content, and nothing to use it on. Lol

No thats not what most console games are at all...whatever gave ye that idea? Personal experience or just guesswork?

I do have some issues, but all things considered, Id personally give it a solid 8 outta 10...the slow drip feed of developement and lack of communication with the devs, the lacklustre and extremely buggy nature of the updates which are released and the over reliance on 3rd party apps and out of game resources cost it 2 points...should cost 3 points, but Im in generous mood ^

If 10/10 is the perfect, flawless game then ED is nearer a 6.5—7.

I'm this age of hyperbole however, there is no room for saying something is just 'pretty good'. It either has to be amazing or rubbish, nothing inbetween.

A review well deserved.

I love this game and since i play in VR, i have almost everything i ever wanted from a space game. And when looking at the development calendar, we are just leaving the initial phase... I am glad, that i joined this journey and look forward to whatever will come the way.

Be seeing you in the void.

There must be some rubbish on the PS4 then! ED is good, but a 9/10 it most certainly is not IMHO.
You are correct, but reviewers can't give 10 out of 10 scores or people won't believe it. Unless it's Portal, or Half-Life, of course. We know the truth.

"There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage."

Agreed.

7.5 to 8.5 depending on the day and the amount of frustration gathered while playing...

PS: Is there any worthy competetion (i.e., another game in the same genre, and no, not SC...) ?

Video game reviews hardly matter anymore.

In Elite's case, I think it's really important we get some proper reviews from time to time. The game has changed so much since its launch and since Horizons started.

The PS4 launch was a really good opportunity for a fresh review.

I'd give elite 75% like a few others here. it'll get a further 7.5% for space legs, 7.5% for landing on all types of (landable) planets and scooping from gas giants + more things to explore in space, 5% for more fleshed out careers with associated missions. After all that it'll be pretty much the perfect space game......it can't get the final 5% as that's reserved for Star Wars.....Elite engine+Star Wars = gaming heaven.

I do feel that it's kind of hard to assign a fair number review to ED. For the right kind of person, it's great, for the impatient or people that just want to shoot stuff, it's lousy.

Impatient? Just want to shoot stuff? What about people that enjoy a more cerebral experience? What about people who like to be challenged in terms of skill or load management? Or people who enjoy a good narrative? Or people who just don't like games based on excessive RNG? Or is it just a simple case of like ED = good person, don't like ED = impatient child with no imagination?

I am around 1000 hours for like 40 bucks of game. This game is amazing. Yes there are flaws - the constant bugs with ECF etc are mind numbing, and it needs more core improvements. But I would give it 10/10.

I'm not giving Elite a number out of ten. It's entirely subjective and silly. It's my favourite ever game; that'll do for me.

They also gave Overwatch a 10/10 and that's a grindy pile of something I can't repeat on here. Maybe they just like grind.

They also like bad games, like Halo Reach getting a 10/10 not to mention giving MGSV a 9/10 and that game was garbage.

They don't exactly offer what I would call an unbiased opinion, I wouldn't put too much stock in their reviews if I were you.

Called Halo Reach bad?

We here are going to need your console gamer card and you are going to get a hole punched in your PC gamer card as well. 2 more and we take that.

Well, come to think of it, they don't really have many space sims, so Elite is really something else for them. As such, the 9/10 makes perfect sense, if for no other reason than lack of any other viable options.

It is a good game, and certainly a long way from where we were in 2014. Perfect? No, far from it. But the salty vets will always be salty, regardless of the features added.

People never can seem to remember that reviews ARE the subjective opinion of the reviewer. Not all sites will warn you of this, but they don't have to. Its common knowledge at this point. Not many sites try to give objective reviews anymore because humans these days can't see past their own opinions. They just pick a reviewer that enjoys those types of games, that way you can get the best idea if the game is for you.

How does that make sense? Well, if you don't generally like that type of game, you don't need someone like yourself telling you that it probably isn't for you. If you do like that kind of game, a like-minded individual telling you it sucks will be more indicative than someone who is incapable of enjoying that genre. Usually, they will make points that resonate with you. You have to know your reviewers.

Personally, I'm glad to see some high reviews. I would give elite an 8, but that's only because I remember there are other humans out there with different tastes. For myself, it's easily a 10. Anyway, these reviews show that the game isn't objectively bad. It shows that there are people out there who really can enjoy it, and contrary to our beliefs it is more than we think. That sends a positive message out for Elite, possibly leading to more sales and maybe an increased player count.

Either way, this game deserves some positive press time. We can't let our jaded views get in the way of everything.

I do feel 9/10 is a bit high. I mean, it's unfinished, which also complicates the rating.

I just meant that it isn't real easy to jump into and requires some commitment.

Repetitive eveything in this game. Cookie cutter factions, A.I. and npc ship behavior the same no matter where you go in the galaxy. Once you been to one Res or one CZ, you have seen them all. Everything remains the same, just the set and background changes. I will say the mission chains are a big step in the right direction along with the announced "core gameplay improvements".

However all my complaints are the result of the nature of the "sandbox" game design. Personally I would have settled for a smaller more detailed sandbox. I give it a 7/10.
