Problem is, momma and pops didn't know the internet when teaching me to talk, and conveying emotions through a text-only medium require good writing skills (and more words than most people are willing to expend).
Hence the introduction of the emoticon early on in electronic communications, somewhat preceded by specific codes in telegrapy.
But I have to admit, I'm also old enough to find the recent (last few years) inflation somewhat confusing - why would anybody need an image for a pile of sh*t?

I don't even want to know what my Platoon Commander would have done to me if I scribbled a 0 and a 7 on the ground and pointed to it when he walked past............
It's actually very simple (I can't believe I am having to explain this...). If you look outside is the sky falling? Is the big yellow ball of fuel approaching us at a rapid rate? Has the planet tilted of it's axis? If so then expect me to be happy because finally I will be rid of my forum nemesis Phillips, Maynard and of course Tj plus the forums will be a much lighter place to visit...
