Some nice video of the wrist-puter working in engine and people walking around with their legs on worlds with atmospheres. Some modular habs and interiors... you know if you guys ever wanted to discuss the game for once instead of shouting SCAM into the echo chamber.

You mean the game's assets (hypothetical ones at this point, until 3.0 releases and actually contains them)? In order to discuss the game, it would be rather helpful to have actual ingame footage of its mechanics working, rather than having the camera fly or being walked around assets, decidedly not showing the actual game.

How does mining work? How does trading work? What can be done with surface POIs? How does instancing and logging in and out work?

Ups! The video tells us if not nothing, then very close to nothing about it. It's just one more of their endless "look how cool our assets look and how busy we are making them look better!" type of marketing whaffle they've been spewing out for how many years now?

We could of course theorycraft our backsides off to come up with all the cool stuff that we imagine we might eventually be able to do with these assets. But then, we'd be in the Star Citizen subreddit echo chamber or CIG's spectrum echo chamber, wouldn't we? My impression is that people discussing the game here seem to be in general over the starry eyed theorycrafting honeymoon phase.

Come back when there is a game to show, maybe?

Some of the latest ATV was quite informative. It was interesting seeing how they work with object scattering and so on.

I didn't like the atmospheric planets, perhaps things are early but I was not impressed by the foliage, the water etc. I did like the Cutlass gang descending towards a planet although it seemed a bit janky, not sure if that was camera controls or what https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbEKn6gN4Qk&t=23m23s

It's not the camera, it's a performance issue.

Their marketing vids always look good, but that never, ever translates to the actual game sitting on people's hard drives.

In fact I've lost count of the amount of things they've shown in marketing videos which then never materialise, even years later, so colour me skeptical.

We can discuss this if and when 3.0 ever gets released.

Actually, in this case, the few scenes that actually suggest player controlled footage look like a bloody slide show. Pre alpha, yadday, yadda, but for marketing material, it's pretty rough, even factoring in the lack of actual game mechanics being shown.

Yes, it probably runs at 20-40fps...

I expect v3.0 run at 20-30fps at best...

LY Engine and current hardware is just not designed to run all that "fidelity"...they probably are just overloading engine all the time to show off nice graphics...

I'm going full-on mopping. Career. Operating my own mopping business and completely cornering the market in top-notch floor finishes. I hope to go cleaning the vast guts of the exploring and trading ships, encountering emergent gameplay possibilities in mopping where nobody has ever mopped before, and etch my name amongst the stars - one high-fidelity bucket after the other.

Hoping to clean up, eh?

I noticed that the shots they used on the atmospheric planets were quite static or very slow zoom in and panning. Clearly there is work to be done but I wonder how things will fare on these planets with lots of people in close vicinity.

Thats the thing. Every year the CIG fans go "right, we've kinda had enough of the pretties, but CIG promised us finished pipelines, lots of content and actual gameplay next year so we made it!". Then CIG continues to remove gameplay from future patches, pushing them back to 'no ETA' territory, delays what is left of the patch and provides more pretties. And the fans completely seem to forget we've been here a thousand times before.

Show us the gameplay loops. On our HDs. That works. And is fun. Stop wasting our time with distractions.

Considering it doesnt work with just a black background and some dots, I'd say 'not at all'.

Only a few short weeks till 3.0 drops with any luck. Wasn't it end of July? Maybe we'll get out much needed loops and folks will have something else to complain about. Like the lack of mission variety, or perhaps NPC sleeves clipping through table geometry.

I really hope that this is the point where it worth putting the smallest money amount down to gain access. Is there much likelihood of them having a free weekend on release or shortly after for 3.0?

Yup...another nice vid.

I'm still cautiously optimistic surrounding 3.0 and beyond....but like the polite and very knowledgeable hecklers on here, I'll be properly awestruck when I can see that from my perspective as a player with my ship and my mates in the background.

Planet tech looks nice in ATV. The material system looks far better in SC compared to ED, does ED have any texture splatting / mixing between different material types on a planet? It looks much more uniform in ED.

It will be interesting to see if 3.0 will bring forests also or just individual trees. And later on, it will be very interesting to see what "procedural cities" mentioned in ATV will look like. There's been a long time to refine the planetary tech in ED to match the one in SC, provided FDev has been working on it after Horizons release. Wish FDev would show their progress at some point..
