Elite on PS4 is getting some pretty darn good reviews

I bought the physical media from Game last weekend and haven't regretted it. It's got a few problems - I've had a couple of complete lockups when exiting menus, and menu draw speed is sluggish. But overall it's pretty damn good, and I know they'll improve it.

Well done, Frontier.

"But oh, the sweet feeling of revenge should you be able to build yourself up and do it back to him later. "

This is where you learn about combat logging.
:)

I really liked these parts of the review, they were spot on:
"As a PC player, online was seamless, and true to the title of the game, bloody dangerous. There is nothing more terrifying than getting a private message saying “You can either drop your cargo, or I can blow you away and take it” from a dude cruising around in an Anaconda who could wipe you out in a second. And even if you do decide to be gracious in granting his request, he might just decide do it anyways.
But oh, the sweet feeling of revenge should you be able to build yourself up and do it back to him later. "

"If you are looking for a consistent narrative or a cinematic experience of any kind in Elite, you aren’t going to find it in the traditional sense. You may find yourself talking about the time you crashed into a Federal ship by mistake and had to book it out of a system, or the time you narrowly escaped plasma death from a roving pirate, but these are your stories. You are going to create them as you play, and if you find the idea of the game play loops available here boring, that may be a very short amount of time indeed."

I`m glad.

I dislike the game on many different levels, but there are things that it does great, and in many ways it`s better than most aaa titles.
Also David was a very under appreciated game legend until recently when he gained some well deserved fame, and despite my gripes with his old habit of dreaming and over promising I wish him well.

Congrats! It's well deserved. This game is a space sim gem that gets better with time. Only Elite Dangerous has a 1:1 scale simulation of the Milky Way galaxy that's shared among multiple platforms.

A simulation of the galaxy that you can interact with only in tiny amounts due to FD's approach, outside the bubble its boring, empty (for the most part) and devoid of any game play for me. It MAY look pretty but nothing else, a bit like saying Jeremy Corbyn won the election :)

I love the zero punctuation reviews. My favourite bit is "Twin laser pointers", although "Space Commander Yahtzee II - Hero of Shopping" is a highlight too [big grin]

The second review in the OP ends with this:
I might even prefer it over PC because I can slump on my couch with a beer and chips and no pants on - the typical uniform of any good space trucker.
That has a significantly different meaning in the UK than it does in the US!

I hate to be the one showing the other side here, but ED is not doing well on player reviews on Amazon.

37% are 1-star reviews, and the complaints are what I would expect: bugs, connection issue but mostly the difficult learning curve and lack of orientation.
I can entirely understand, and I am not surprised to see more people playing and losing interest almost immediately, rather than spending (a lot of) time until it starts making some sense. I know I did it because I love flying, love space exploration and recognized the potential, but it took me a week just to figure out how to dock/undock and probably a month to configure the controllers and understand basics (I am a slow learner I guess).

I don't own a ps4 or Xbox, but coming from the PC I almost lost friends by convincing them to buy and play. I got to the point of gifting ED when there was a Steam promotion... no joy: a few will enjoy it; most will hate it, makes sense for me. But I think FD has abysmal communication skills, and people are buying this probably thinking its Star Wars Battlefront or something. Of course, on FD defense, things have improved a lot in recent patches, the tutorials too.

Of course, on FD defense, things have improved a lot over the past patches, the tutorials too. They just need to make it clearer, so people won't feel disappointed.

Because Amazon is THE place to go for game reviews isn't it. Don't worry CMDR, anyone that knows anything about games wont buy a game because of reviews from there

I'm not too surprised.

I remember being blown away by it in beta, so I can only imagine how I'd feel coming to it fresh now.

Tbh, I'm a lititle envious.... ..and it's a big warm welcome to all our PS4 Cmdrs!

Did you just describe your soul? or perhaps Theresa May's soul? ;-)

Do you know the old addage "Assumption is the mother of all screw-ups"? I am not a Tory voter, in fact I think the whole system is a joke and not fit for purpose. Shouldn't expect any less though.

In what way? I read it that he sits in his underwear, with a beer and chips (snacks) and have fun?

What is wrong with that?

And so it should, as it mirrors what happened on the xbone media. Games like this are a rare thing on consoles and the investment on FD side is like a shining endorsement that consoles are growing up...have grown up. We still cant and likely never will rival the pc in terms of graphics and fps, but we can still enjoy the game on a somewhat more limited platform.

Console gamers been crying out fer games like this fer years, especially those space based normally niche games. There are a few space based alternatives, though nothing that can even touch elite in terms of complexity. This is a first in many ways fer many different peeple, not least console gamers themselves, but also frontier themselves.

As much as any of us can sit and criticize them fer other game aspects, I can still recognize a touch of brilliance and class in what is happening with this game. Its not perfect, but what game could be after pulling 3 different platforms into the same bgs? Frontier have done what many others have said fer years couldnt be done, and as an xbone player meself, I thank them fer this if nothing else ^
I completely agree with this entire statement, i'd rep it but apparently i can't so soon.

I would add that as an Xbox one player i never thought i'd see a game like this on a console, i'd never played a space sim before but i knew it was my thing because i remember watching my dad play the older games on PC. So i'd also like to thank frontier for making the best console game that i have ever played.

I don't know where you are from, but Amazon is a pretty big store were I live. Plus those seem like genuine first hand player reviews, I think its a mistake to diss them. I love ED, we all here do and appreciate the work from FD with high hopes for the future, but their marketing is missing the point in my opinion and there is an overall lack of better communication. I just found out today that once my ship blows up I loose my crew member forever... it seems like you learn something important everyday the hard way. Im fine with that, most people are not, they will get off.

SciFiPulse gave Elite Dangerous on PS4 a 9.6 out of 10. It's a short review though.

I see what you are saying but the steep learning curve is part of what makes the game what it is. There are plenty of videos on YouTube for people that want to put in the time but if it was dumbed down too much it wouldn't be what people love about it. The crew member thing you point out is very obscure though in fairness.

Tom Renegade gives it a 9 out of 10. This is a proper video review 8 minutes long.

Metro.co.uk gives it an 8 out of 10. I also think that the missions should be more exciting and add more life and stuff to do on planets.
