Cannons the verdict?

Ok i dont like to use multicannons cus every one does, and as a result i think they are boring and i hate them. I like to be different, what can i say.

So regular cannons. I have been a fan since beta when they were the bees knees.. then they got nerfed some what and were.. erm not so good. One buff later and they are.. ok.. ish?

I have a viper built for light waight. I have 2 light waight rails on the medium slots.. they are great and save me 7 tons so they are keepers. But the small hard points are a bit of a conundrum.

Normaly i have rails in the smalls and a plasma and missle rack in the meds but its too heavy for this build.

So i put long range cannons in the smalls both have high yeald on them and... well they seem rubbish.

I can hollow out the inside of a fas with them but rather than destroying the power plant they seem to spread the damage over all the modules so it takes untill i have prety much melted the inside of the ship for the PP to go pop.

Any one have better experiance with them?

Dispersal field on one cannon seemed like a good alternative and hopefully when i hit the PP ot will do more damage to it and thing will be better? But then what of the other cannon?

Any cannon gurus out there?

I test cannons every now and then, (but never bothered to modify any), and they've always felt "meh".

But I've read that some modifications can make them lethal.

They're ok with long range mods as it increases the shot speed to an acceptable amount. However I don't believe that a weapon should need an engineering mod to make them viable.

i pretty much have the same special as you (small overcharged high yield cannos on my DBS). but i run a medium beam with it... strip shields, shoot out powerplant, use beam to trigger a critical powerplant malfunction. works like a charm.

Plasma Accelerators are kinda like Cannons, but without all the suck.

Seriously, Multicannons have the advantage of travel time. PAs have the advantage of absolute damage. Cannons have the advantage of broken heat mechanics. Beyond that, cannons royally suck.

Cannons are great. You should see my 7-cannon gunship. It's one of the most effective ships I got, even more so when a fighter is out with me.

I have used cannon as burst hull/module damage for ever. My PvE set ups generally go with Pulse lasers for shields and small ship, with one or two cannon, depending on the ship, for cracking the nut. They are pretty powerful, hit above their class, and are great at mincing modules. One of the side values, for me, of a cannon is the added ammo control one needs.

MC's are just spray them out there. After a while that get boring. I rather the boom, and then the real drop in integrity. Frag Cannon are great fun, up close. At any range they are less effective.

It boils down to getting the power of a Rail, or PA, without all of the drain on my power plant.

Humm i still feel like high yeald shells are not all they are cracked up to be. I can shoot the power plant with long range small cannons quite effectively but they juat dont seem to do the damage i would expect to the targeted module.. now if you have loads of cannons im shure it reaches a kind of critical mass. But for just 2 small cannons im not shure high yeald is the best special. IM NOT USING HEAT CANNONS cus they are disshonerable and none of the other effects beyond dispersal seem like they are much use but two dispersal seems pointless.

Also has any one done testing to see if the extra explosive damage also convays to better hull damage due to it being explosive? As this may off set the aparent undesirable splash module damage

Cannons are the best, long range for faster shell speed is a great mod on big hefty ships counters small ships very well, and a few of them all with hi-ex do modules very quickly on bigger targets.

Projectile velocities for cannons vs multicannons should be flipped. It would be more realistic and it would fix everything.

Problem with long range is, though, that it comes with a (hefty) mass penalty. Bad if you have a small fighter with enhanced (and Engineered) drives.

I'm currently running un-engineered (haven't unlocked Tod yet) cannon on my combat Sidey (is there anyone laughing?) and I like especially their almost non-existant power draw. May go for short range (they're pretty much useless beyond a km or so in any case due to their slow shot speed - and if I can't get the Sidey to less than 500 m, I'm doing something wrong) some time in the future.

So do you find the high yealds to be more effective against modules than regular shells? I wunder why i feel like they do less module damage.. have you tested them without?

My python runs cannons (in turrets too... yeah I know I'm crazy)

A pair of them sit on the med points, engineered with Lvl 5 rapid fire and high yield shells.

Great for taking out the FSD on a 'conda or the power plant on anything else.

Only drawback is the rapid fire chews through ammo like they are multi-cannons, and you need to pick and choose when you open fire with them... no good blasting away at a sidey while its 2.8km away, but time the shot well as the sidey goes past..... Boom no more sidey

I have beams and long range cannons on my conda. Timing is everything. You can't just blast away like other weapons. Firing when the enemy has slowed or is heading toward or away from you greatly increases your chances of hitting him.

I'd hazard a guess that if Cannons had more umph in the sound and visual departments, people would think them more effective without a single stat changing. I'm not a fan of them simple as this look and sound like pea shooters.

Truth right here. The first time I got a ship with some firepower and strapped on full multicannons I screamed YEEEEAHHHHH when I was moving things down - it felt like I was firing one of those big exoskeletons in the matrix. Cannons could use some love in the aesthetic department.
