When you're really up for a challenge:

Cuyahoga
Mantua
Tuscarawas

Now those are some fun places to say - or watch others try to say.

Natchitoches is a fun one to use on people too. The expressions on their faces, let alone the horrid pronunciations, are comical in the extreme at times. LOL

Interestingly enough, when you check with the Oxford English Department, that's how they say it too. :D

Is he meant to come off as a huge bag of buttholes?

Because from the moment I was reading about the leaders he just seemed like the biggest jerk of all of them.

I'm not sure if he was originally written that way, or evolved into it. He certainly doesn't seem to discourage that opinion though. LOL

Pretty sure he gets an entire T9 full of coal for Christmas every year.

Might be more, but at least one. :D

Li Yong-Rui - I have purposely avoided trying to say his name out loud or just call him "Lee"

I just pronounce this the Mandarin way, even though it's meant to be Cantonese style (otherwise Yong would be spelled Yang).

Mandarin sounds almost identical except "Rui" sounds like "Ruh-ay".

I am completely new to Elite and just got the game fro PS4 on the 27th. I enjoy roleplaying in games like this and I enjoy knowing as much as I can regarding the lore and the setting of the world I am in.

That being said I am also a stickler for pronouncing names of people and places correctly. So I am gonna list the names of people and places I am having trouble with and if you all could give me the correct way to pronounce them I would greatly appreciate it.

Aisling Duval - I have been saying Eye-ling

Arissa Lavigny- Duval
- (The lavigny part obviously) I have been saying Luh-vig-knee

Edmund Mahon - I have been saying Muh-hone

Denton Patreus - I have been saying Pa-tray-us (or just refer to him as "Jerkbag")

Li Yong-Rui - I have purposely avoided trying to say his name out loud or just call him "Lee"

Archon Delaine - I have been saying Delay-knee

Pranav Antal - Honestly have no idea here. Pra-nav An-tall?

Achenar - I have been saying Ack-eh-nar

Cubeo - I have been saying Q-bey-oh

Eotienses - Not even gonna try this one

I greatly appreciate any help that is offered. Thank you in advance. :D

Ar-kon De-lane

Aisling Duval - I have been saying Eye-ling Ays-Ling Doo-vahl. Ay sounds like the "ey" in "hey" with an "s." I can't find any reason to make the 's' silent.

Arissa Lavigny- Duval
- (The lavigny part obviously) I have been saying Luh-vig-knee A-ris-sa La-vi-Knee

Edmund Mahon - I have been saying Muh-hone Edmond Ma-hon ( pretty straight forward )

Denton Patreus - I have been saying Pa-tray-us (or just refer to him as "Jerkbag") Denton Pa-tree-us though the more accurate would be Pa-tray-us

Li Yong-Rui - I have purposely avoided trying to say his name out loud or just call him "Lee" Lee Yong Roo-Ee or Rwee sounds similar to the French "Oui"

Archon Delaine - I have been saying Delay-knee Ar-kon Da-lane

Pranav Antal - Honestly have no idea here. Pra-nav An-tall? Pra-nev Ahn-taal

Achenar - I have been saying Ack-eh-nar The pronunciation is usually A-chee-naar but I've always said Ar-ka-naar, lol.

Cubeo - I have been saying Q-bey-oh Que-Bee-Oh

Eotienses - Not even gonna try this one E-o-shin-ses

I greatly appreciate any help that is offered. Thank you in advance. :D

Irish, like Scottish, and the whole of Gaelic language... I do like to hear them spoken, but whoever tried to invent spelling... there had to be a whole lot of whiskey involved.

Aoibhneas
Comhaltas
Comhluadar
Flaithiúlach
Muiceanach idir Dhá Sháile
Sláinte
Taoiseach

Just a handful of words and a place-name that sound absolutely nothing like how they look. It's easier to pronounce:

Hehe. Gaelic words are generally pronounced pretty consistently, in comparison with English. Just.. differently.

I love watching people struggle with names like Fachtna, Síomha, Cumhal, Conchobar etc..

My prunciations above in italics. No idea if I'm right or even close.

I made a couple of video's where I used the pronunciation Ma-hon and it's kinda stopped me making more until I go back and Fix it.
Mahon - Maarn

Well, it could be the American variety (Ed Mahon sounds very American), in which case it's probably right MAH-hon. If it's Irish, it's more like a glottal stop MAH'an.

Adding to the OP's list, how is everyone pronouncing 'Wyrd'

I say Weird??

It's such a fun little word, isn't it?

For those not in the know, it means "fate", or "personal destiny", and it an old Norse term.
I defer to here: https://theburlyram.wordpress.com/pronunciation-key-and-terminology/old-norse-pronunciation-key/

"Y and Ý – are pronounced like the ‘ü’ in the Germ. word ‘Fürher’."

So the correct pronunciation would be "würd", with a slight roll of the "r".

It sounds a bit like "word" when congested, but not quite.

Pronounced consistently, yes. Sound anything like they look? Not so much.
