Speculation about Elite Feet / Space Legs

Well, I mean, GTAV took five years, a quarter of a billion dollars, decades of institutional experience making third person open world games and the ability to hire the best talent available.

This Elite Feet expansion would have to be built with, like, the same amount of resources Rockstar put in to the tennis mini-game in GTAV.
So then we can have an indoor tennis court on the conda, cutter, and vette, right? :p

I suspect that there is probably a team working on it already. As said, i don't expect it to be on the scale of GTAV. But there is no reason why the depth can't be there. Also I would expect it to be expanded upon as we go along, like we all expect planetary landings to be.

i would already be happy if i could explore my ships.. Walk around.

Doesn't even have to add gameplay, that will come later. I just want to be able to walk to my SRV, (optional), walk to my Figher (optional), Visit my fighter pilots bunk. Walk to the observation deck on the Anaconda's bow. Walk to the cargo bay..

That's all im asking for. Walking on Stations will come later.. Just, inside my ship for now..

^this. Elite is a spaceship-first game, and personally I don't care much about walking in stations or on planet surfaces (perhaps more down the line). But walking inside your ship, well, that's a different thing. Imagine being able to go and see your cargo racks filled with canisters. To be able to look out of an observation window while exploring. Even, as Dusty says, to have to get up from your chair and walk to the SRV or SLF.

This approach has 3 advantages:

1) It would make you "live" your ship much more, without dropping the spaceship-first general feel of Elite;
2) would offer some possible in-ship gameplay mechanics: (your drives are failing, go fix them; the UA is corroding your cargo, go patch it);
3) it seems to me that it would not be an immense amount of work to realize. The cockpit interiors are done, and rumor has it that most assets for the rest of the ship interiors are in place too. Considering that when playing in VR you can already "walk around", it really does not seem to me that to implement something like this would take ages. Surely significantly less than having to design immense station interiors.

I reccon that ED is actually closer to having space legs than folk think. I can't prove anything ofc, but... i get that feeling ;)

I dunno. On one of the live streams one of the devs said something like 'putting in elite feet would be like putting in a whole other game to the game' in a way that strongly implied to me it wasn't something they were in the process of doing.

Still, if we are voting I reckon they should invest in making an animation system that can generate walking and running gaits that vary with gravity:-

Can't have commanders walking on 0.1g moons the same way they would walk on Earth.

Their lead designer says otherwise...

Here is a link you may have all missed I think what they are saying is if you are waiting for game updates and expansion's do not hold your breath, and when they do start to add new expansion's or if the do it will cost more.

Here’s an interesting question for Elite Feet (or Space Legs if you prefer), I was going to discuss on the next Top Shift or Lave Radio. What with Eve closing the walking round stations / captain’s cabin option and X-Rebirth’s walking around stations being regarded as a tedious chore, Would people be happy with the starting point being just a bar being available in stations where Commander avatars can walk in and socialise? Heck they could even 'Holo' in (Right I'll duck and cover!!)

This is pure speculation about what this functionality would be required to make this happen;-
  1. First person view only – No third person view.
  2. No avatar to avatar combat (yet).
  3. You can only disembark from your ship within the hanger and walk around your ship and walk to the lift and back.
  4. Once at the Lift, you have one option - The Bar! (This would probably be expanded on in the future to a Mall or park)
  5. The lift will take you to the corridor outside the bar and you can walk in (For immersion’s sake, Frontier can say that it’s only the approved offworld area for the moment to reduce the chance of a Cmdr. bringing in new bugs or viruses).
  6. Here is a large room with a couple of serving counters, plenty of standing tables and sit down alcoves at.
  7. Cmdrs. will need more than just the chat window to communicate with; they’ll need Emotes and actions to perform (i.e. the Legendary PsykoKow Pirate Dance will have to be replicated) Maybe some way to make to avatars interact (Fist bump, Shake Hands, Kiss, Punch, Throw a mug!) with each other.
  8. Obviously Cmdrs. will have to be able to buy drinks (For immersion sake, you could have it so you can’t fly your ship if your avatar is drunk).
  9. To make it feel less of a ‘just a glorified chatroom’, there are various Terminals dotted round the bar, replicating the main station screens (I.e. Marketplace, Missions, Etc)
  10. Contacts can be represented by actual NPCs sat around the Bar (Black Market) or Behind Desks.
  11. In order to encourage cmdrs to visit the bar; there are various terminals or contacts that are not available from the main station screen. Those could be;
    • A Bounty hunter board, where cmdrs can set bounties on other players.
    • Wing Board – where cmdrs can off their services as a wingman or look for other people to wing up.
    • Material Exchange – a player market where players can buy and sell synthesis materials and data with other players.
    • In-game link to the CQC Arena. Both playing games and spectating them ;-)

If we consider this kind of stuff it might explain to people why we’re probably not getting Space legs in season three. If I put my dev hat on, looking at this list, we’re probably talking at least a year of an experienced dev team’s time in order to create this kind of functionality. You’ve also got to factor in that the FPS engine will have to be expanded on in the future, which means that there will be a lot of infrastructure would need to be built in that we would never see as players at the start and the thought of how complex linking the FPS and Space parts of the game would probably give me a case of the screaming Heebie Jeebies. Now I might be completely off track with these estimates because I don’t know the capabilities of the COBRA engine and the Frontier Dev Team I would consider to be far above the average (Not meaning to Brown-nose but …).

So TL : DR, It's going to be a lot of work to put Elite Feet (Space Legs) in.

Do you think it’s worth Frontier spending that so much time putting what is effectively a new game within Elite Dangerous?

Would you prefer them to improve the space game features first?

Are there any ideas that you thought works in Star Citizen, Eve or X-Rebirth you think that E : D should take notice of?

I really don't understand why it would be so difficult. You can already float around your cockpit in VR and just with the camera. If all they want to do is allow people to walk around the ship, there are only two things they must do:

1. Design all ship interiors. This is the hardest part IMO, but not complicated at all. It simply requires time to build the 3D models, textures, sounds and spaces with collision detection (probably already in the game engine). Again, not complicated to do, just time intensive (but, honestly, we're talking a few months, not years).
2. Ground the camera to the floor with a head bob camera animation. This is one of the easiest things to do in game development. There are Unity tutorials on doing this sort of thing within just a couple hours of newbie programming.

That's it. Am I missing something?

Now, that doesn't really include any mechanics, missions, or game-play behind it, but when did that ever stop FD from releasing a feature? Planetary landings is even more complex than walking around a ship and that is still very basic in itself.

I think most of us know that space legs isn't coming anytime soon. As to game updates, we are getting one hopefully by the end of september (2.4). As to paid for updates/expansions, we don't know. There may well be a paid for expansion at xmas time. There may not be. We shall have to wait for the special event that is coming soonish. The fact that there is a special event to show stuff off actually makes me think that it will be a little bit more then core updates, but we shall see, and won't be disapointed if it isn't.

Not really fussed by space legs to be honest, it can take as long as it needs to. Exploration mechanics are far, far more important!

Imagine being able to go and see your cargo racks filled with canisters. To be able to look out of an observation window while exploring.

I CAN imagine doing it.
I just can't imagine doing it TWICE.

Sure, having that functionality available as PART of an actual gameplay mechanic would be great, but just for the sake of it? No thanks. Do it properly, or don't waste time on it.

Happily, FDev seem to have realized that the majority of players aren't satisfied with bare-bones, placeholder stuff - hence 3.0's focus on core gameplay and the change to the 'Season' model

Surely getting out of your ship to explore the inside of alien ruins or cave systems or derelict ships is part of exploring.

Ahhh, what a great sketch that was.

They could offer gait packs which would could allow your avatar to walk in different ways;

  1. March
  2. Hop
  3. Skip
  4. Mince
  5. Silly Walk
  6. Hipster
  7. Power Walk

:p:p:p

Agree 100%.

Current gameplay: Find a shipwreck. "Oh, there's a shipwreck". Take a screenshot. Leave.

Elite feet gameplay: Find a shipwreck. Drive around it to find a hatch or hull breach you can use for ingress. Get out, and scan for life-signs. Enter the ship and explore, taking care to avoid environmental hazards (electrical short-circuits, radiation, bio-hazards, flammable/combustible materials). Alter your suit operating parameters accordingly. Find lots of useful engineering materials in the cargo hold. Detect motion behind you. Make a choice of run or fight.

Or maybe you can pull the discovery module out, and salvage the ship's scanned data. Maybe you can even repair some ships and claim them as your own. etc..etc..etc..

As Frontier have basically stated that the next year (at least) will not deliver space legs, Id rather not waste my time speculating.

Call me back in a year, with positive blips from Frontier and Id be happy to discuss then.

Exactly what I am hoping it will be like.

So... has anyone done any fan art or whatever of Elite style small arms etc?

Given the way ship guns unfurl out of the hardpoints I kinda think people guns should deploy from a folded storage mode the same way.

Maybe they could just add a little optional non-interactive cutscene you could trigger in which your commander walks towards your ship in slow motion:-

The way I see stealing ships work in Elite is,

If you are in a stolen or salvaged ship, you simply cant rebuy it.. if you loose it its gone...

so say you use your Cobra to steal a conda, while flying that conda, you will get bounty hunter type NPC's trying to reclaim that ship pestering you.... when you finally die you are sit with a "return to ship" rebuy screen.... and you're back in your Cobra
