Why the hell am I rank grinding? Cutter or Corvette worth it?

i flew on the beta, i would rather take a tradeconda or shoot me in the foot [big grin]

Not a problem, the T9 doesn't suit everyone which is just as well otherwise there's be nothing by T9s out there. Once of the nice things about Elite is the number of ships to try out. I won at least one of and have flown each of the player owned ships except the fighters and have found the ones that suit me.

Go to Quince and farm your Empire ranks with the planetary scan missions.
You'll get your ranks, and all the money you need to buy and outfit your Cutter.

Probably already something that has been said but;

The ships are absolutely worth having, but I would not grind for them. I spent about 6-8 weeks on a Federal rank journey. It was relaxed, enjoyable and made me a load of credits.

Don't grind for them, forcing yourself to do something unnaturally you do not enjoy will spoil the game for you and make you bitter. Some people enjoy playing games like that in which case forge on, but others can't and should not play like that - not if they want to enjoy the ships at the finish line rather than resent them.

Both ships are fabulous, the 'vette smashes things up like no other ship and with a little engineering (good rolls on my full, very heavy combat fit are 18ly and 356m/s boost) and the cutter is just pure space slickness.

Earn them in your own time and enjoy them, if you feel like you are grinding take a break.

I was grinding for rank to get the Cutter, when I took part in the Open Beta period I figured I'd try one out, well a bit disappointed really.

I love sitting in my clipper and how it feels what it does and how it does it, I have the cash to buy and kit a Cutter and no doubt the rank will come but I'll pass unless I want one to look at,
there's no denying the Cutter is a beautiful ship and it would allow me to earn much more money but as there's nothing to spend it on... I'll pass because I have my Clipper.

By the time you get the cutter, they'll have released the panther clipper, and you'll have to start all over again. :p

I use the word "grind" as, not a negative thing, but as a term to indicate repeated behavior - in this case rank missions.
6-8 hours a week is all I get of gaming (all ED for a long while) so it's hard to feel...ill-used by the process.
In other words I don't get enough stick time for it to feel (negatively) grindy or boring. It just takes a hell of a long time.

And for the poster above I just left Quince. Tried it for three days and it was awful. Bad luck or bad BGS states. Currently traveling to a greener pasture.

The reasoning for this thread, and my OP, was is the "grind" worth it to try a Cutter when I really like the Anaconda and T9.

Looking back now I was a bit of a dummy for not downloading the last beta and giving it a try but I had a bad internet connection then and big d/l's are (were) a pain. Plus I didn't think of it... :D

The simple answer is no.

I did exactly the same and had the cutter for a while but it is not fun to fly and the rebuy is rediculous.
I now just trade in the t9 and have a Anaconda for other things.

Very worth it. I now own all of the big three and they each have functions that they excel at. The Anaconda is the ideal multirole ship and explorer, the Corvette is basically flying death to NPCs in any number, and the Cutter is a nigh-invincible cargo ship. Each also offers a distinctly different flying experience.

If you have your heart set on a Corvette or Cutter, there are ways to get them a little faster than normal. Quince will get you the rank and money for a Cutter in about a month, and Niu Hsing will get you the rank for a Corvette in a similar amount of time. Just depends on what rank you happen to be at already. The lower the better, as long as you hold off on accepting any rank-up missions.

Could you elaborate a bit on that? Is working on the next ranks WITHOUT doing any rank-up missions faster? And then doing a bunch of them? I was under the impression it is the same.

I did all the rank grind for the cutter (i'm glad i did) but i would not do it again... that's why i don't have the corvette yet.

You would be better off getting the Engineers unlocked and get a Conda and make it better than any other Ship in the game.

I own all the big 3. I have 2 Cutters (one on each account), because I love that ship. However, the game does not change appreciably when you have one.

In the end whether it is worth the time investment is entirely a personal decision.

For me it was :)

Can't agree with that.

The Cutter is certainly a bit of a whale (a slinky, elegant whale) but there's certainly fun to be had in flying a properly-equipped Cutter.
Fun which, as a rule, renders the cost of a re-buy irrelevant.

and is in the eye of the beholder.

Have you considered that the rank rewards currently stop at the cutter or corvette but that may only be just for now? I wanted the Cutter so ranked up for it. But it occurred that what if a patch is released and the ship of my dreams was locked out at king level and I found myself 3 weeks of grind from it? Same for the Corvette.

Go for the rank. Maybe you hate the ships. Sell them. But the effort is not wasted. One patch that rank will serve you again. It’s a time investment. I got my King and Admiral all done for that reason. No need yet for those ranks but maybe one day, and I already have my trousers on.

I recently started playing on PC after playing on XBox for 10 months. I made the ranks on XBox for the Cutter and swore I wouldn't do it again. Well, I miss my Cutter so I started ranking up a few days ago. I'm already up to Viscount and I've been having fun doing it again. I think doing it in VR has helped a little this time :) (thank you Oculus sale!)

I think the most important thing is to take breaks here and there. Go take part in CG or go do some bounty hunting to break it up. And if you have your heart set on the Cutter I can't recommend grade 5 dirty drives on it enough. I found they really cut down on the drift and the speed was crazy for such a large ship.

You really don't need those ships, if you don't enjoy what your doing then don't do it. Kinda ruins the point of why spending free time with a game to begin with.

You don't really need to play Elite either so I think that is a bit of a non-argument. The OP wants to try those ships whether he needs them or not.

Early on, I wanted a FAS, so I built up my reputation with a small pocket of systems with quite a number of Fed factions, and started doing missions. I was very low-ranked trade wise, and the best paying missions were rated for Deadly and Elite, so I was getting chased a lot (pre Horizons/Mac version) by some nasty pirates so I always used fighters/ships that could fight to do missions and small cargo runs related to said missions.

I've never owned a Adder or a Hauler, or any of those cargo haulers because I was too busy getting chased by mission generated NPCs and I wanted the ability to fight if I did something stupid and couldn't escape.

I've always had my eye on Fed ships, all the way to the Corvette, because I have been fighter-oriented since I started this game obviously. I've tried hauling bovine droppings once (Sothis?) and hated it. That and the missions I was running were giving me three things: credits, rank, and materials and I saw this as a much better solution to achieving my goal.

Once I got to the Python, things became a bit easier. More rank/credits/mats per session, and I was discovering/bookmarking choice systems that I used for buying stuff and ranking up with for even more missions. I never saw the 'rank grind' others see as I was too busy discovering new systems, and gathering credits/materials. For me, this helped immensely.

Long story short, I have my Corvette. Love it. For bounty hunting it has the same jump range as the FDL, but kills a whole bunch quicker, which makes it my bounty hunting credit machine. I also have the rank for the Cutter, but I have not bought one as I see no immediate use for one. Simply, I don't do bulk hauling/trading. It (like mining) just doesn't interest me, and I see no other use for the ship otherwise. But then I've had the same problem with all of the Imperial ships, in that I try them out, but quickly sell them as there are better choices for how I play this game.

Maybe if I had taken to cargo hauling and had already accumulated the credits and materials I would have viewed the rank missions in an entirely different light. ;)

Best of luck with all of this.
