Engineers Have you opened all of the (current) engineers?

Hardly any myself as several paths require "illegal" play, like illicit items, black markets and smuggling, which as an honest trader, my character cannot do.

I won't do slave trade, smuggling, mining (boring), or CZs. Pretty much kills my unlocking any more than I have now.

I wasn't interested in the black market requirements either, but when we had that mission bug that was killing missions and leaving me with illegal cargo in my hold I just sold it at the local black market rather than dump it. It was a moment of weakness...

It's nice to meet someone else who keeps to their roleplay even when it hinders their game. For most, RP is an excuse to grief.

You can find 29 engineers on eddb.io, search for factions, government = engineer.

Nice find! I get 30, though. FWIW, the new ones would be...[SPOILER!]

Captain Banner (Independent)
Dorn Etienne (Empire)
Elui Shera (Independent)
Kit Lange (Independent)
Lex Avermann (Independent)
Marshall (Independent)
Matt 'The Gunner' Sorbis (Independent)
Mel Brandon (Alliance)
Plasma Piotr (Federation)
Trin Falcour (Independent)

And we even know where they're all located. What tricks they might do or what their prereqs are is still to be determined, though. And they still will have to send you an invitation first, ofc.

O7,

I have unlocked all but three:

  • Nemo - unimportant to my playstyle
  • Tarquin - still to do (I hate hauling tea 5 or 10 tonnes at a time)
  • Dekker - well, let her sink into the abyss - nothing there of interest to me and ridiculous unlock requirement

The ones I have unlocked are generally at level 5, except the weapons guys, which are usually left behind at level 3 due to "favors".

All but Dekker as she currently has nothing that can not be done elsewhere. and it's not worth the grind to unlock.

I got luck with Tarquin a couple weeks ago. The system was in an expansion (or something, can't remember exactly) and it let me buy 15 tea at a time so it went pretty quick.

That must have been "BOOM" state. But a good idea, check state once a week and do the "Rares Engineers" when the respectice supply systems hit a boom.

Dekker has nothing, what a waste, reckon she might get some "Thargoid" fighting tech we might need ?
(All she has above the rest is G4 FSD Int. , we can get G3 from Tiana)

my fear is, that i need PALIN for thargoid tech at some point

and what others described as difficulty for them to gather 10 painite (took me 20minutes when i went for it), is for me to do 100 jumps out into the blackness and back, just to get the invitation.
And i don't know why - since i traveled to the thargoid-anouncement event location with an adder, getting the distance covered with my asp should be around the same number of jumps

LoL, if you have a ship with a decent jump range you can run out 5k and self destruct. The DBX can easily do 50+ly (mine does) even with a crappy FSD roll! It's rebuy is only 600k so peanuts. It's a nice shuttle craft as shipping the big three around is prohibitively expensive, where as the DBX is nice and cheap! So I can do secondary objectives while leaving my main ships in situ.

Skip this bit if you like... [Last night for example I left the Vette at the CG as I'll want to do more combat there yet, flew to Shinrarta in the DBX, collected the JumpaConda, flew to Merope (nearest shipyard to Maia) shipped to DBX over, flew to Obsidian Orbital while that was being shipped, collected the Palin mission, flew back to Merope, flew to Palin in the DBX, got a 133% G5 dirty drives roll on the DBX, which is too good to waste on the DBX so I'll switch it for the Asp thrusters, flew back to Merope for the JumpaConda. Today I'll do the Palin mission for 1x Resin, fly back to Shinrarta, transfer the DBX back to Shinrarta, fly to the CG in the DBX and do some more pew pew in the Vette again... Sounds complicated doesn't it. Thank fdev for the ridiculously high big ship transfer costs for that...]

The point though, for about an hour and a half of play time you can get the 5k distance done easily so that you can access Palin. Needed for the Thargoid tech? Very likely!

TL, DR
Buy a DBX, fit a half decent FSD, do the 5kly, self destruct (600k rebuy), go see Palin and pull pained expressions for him.

Dekker was the only one I had left and was not in a hurry to unlock her since she didn't have anything I wanted. But in the name of having everything squared away tight, AND having nothing better to do today I spent a couple of hours in and out of a nearby High CZ to get the 1 mil Cr in Bonds.

I can confirm that it is 1 Million Credits of Combat Bonds to fulfill the requirement.

I then bought an FSD Interdictor on site and burned some cheap and throwaway (to me) mats to level up to Grade 5 Access.

Now I have them all done, needed or not.

It was 1mil combat bonds for me to (both engineers that ask for combat bonds). Both were in Boom and this may make a difference as to the level of bonds asked for... Purely speculation.

TBH, I'm surprised that fdev included this element in the engineers. Forcing you to smuggle illegal goods and use black markets. If you wish to try and play strictly within the law, then that locks you out of that part of the engineers tree. I can get the point of fdev trying to broaden people's game play, but like you I think it is going too far to force you to include illegal game play mechanics. It's a game, so I'm not beating myself up about it but I do understand where you are coming from on this one.

Agreed, much like playing iron man rules when you die... You wipe your game. Personally, I'm too morally 'weak' to trash months of play like that :p

Yeah did exactly this myself yesterday. Shinrarta is my base and I've got the Vette and Conda at the CG. Needed to go see Bill for a large focused G5 TLB plassie for the Vette so built a quickie DBX at Jameson's (DBX has a large hardpoint or I would have used my trusty Asp).

A few people have been saying they haven't bothered with Col Dekker. I should point out that the description for him mentions that he will introduce you other engineer, as do Didi Vatermann and Broo Tarquin. Getting Col Dekker now might save some time later when you really want to access one of the new engineers...

Also, the recommendation to unlock Palin by flying out 5000Ly then suiciding is throwing away a lot of exploration data that can be used to get very quickly allied with permit-giving factions (Alioth Independents and Sirius Corp come to mind). There are several other permit locked systems that exploration data would be good for too, not to mention you can sell the exploration data at several engineers to quickly upgrade access.
