Dark side of planets still not dark

This bug was reported a long, long time ago. Why hasn't it been fixed? What is the status of this bug and when can we expect the fix to roll out?
 
It's not fixed because it is not a bug. Instead it is working as intended.
Not everybody likes it, i also don't like it but i'm not sure if we will ever see a change to that. Many wish for own adjustable improved lights to decide themselves how far the artificial light should go.

Hey Cmdrs,

To reiterate what I've been speaking to Malenfant about in PM, I have chased this up with the developers, they are aware of the issue and currently working on it.

I don't have a time frame as to when this issue will be resolved. I will try to keep you posted here with any additional information I can find out about this issue.

Those in Denial will tell you that its the cockpit using some sort of light enhancement to help you land.
Others will say "why would you want to land in the dark anyway"
Other, like myself, just suspect its an issue with the dynamic lighting, same thing that causes a lightening (like thunder lightening) effect to flash after you leave orbital cruise.

Once upon a time in a beta feedback thread with much complaining about graphical "downgrades" and "nerfs" and other accusations of Frontier wilfully sabotaging their own game, the head of technical design (or similar title) sat down and explained with great patience and in reasonable detail why the current lighting system does what it does and that they indeed intended to change it when they had the resources to do so.

Because back when the Horizons beta came out, the dark side of planets were actually *dark*. They intentionally did something to change it...and now they need resources that they can't currently dedicate to reverting those changes.

It's a shame too, because back then, the dark side of planets actually meant you needed to use your headlights. And I tell you it was awesome.

Yeah, I loved to race around close the ground, with only the head lights to quide me :-D

That's not it, they don't want the "dark side" to be black. They simulate your eyes getting used to the darkness, the light comes from the other stars in the galaxy. They want to improve the current effect, not remove it.

The dark side, light side bug...we hates that one dont we precious? Not quite as much as the beigification, but we do so hates it...in old mountain biker terminology, whoever designed that went and faceplanted ^
 
Interesting note: a bit before 2.3.10 came out, the dark side of Kosmala Rewards in Quince actually became dark. After 2.3.10, though, it's back to being lit up. Go figure.

Personally, I like that the dark sides are lit up a bit, as there is no point in content that you can't see. Kosmala Rewards is a step too far, though. It's nearly as bright as the day side, but with no shadows. It just looks weird. I think it has something to do with the fact that it's in a close orbit of a giant-class star. Maybe there's some sort of "light envelope" that extends out to a greater distance for giant stars, and it's affecting the planet. Just my two cents.

I would be happy with a simple on/off toggle like orbit lines have. Call it "Night vision".
- Doesn't ruin anyone's gameplay.
- Offers the same gameplay for everyone.
- Certainly easy to implement.

Then, if needed, implement more realistic night vision later.

Thats wierd, since the last update more than few planets that had the bright issue are pitch black in my game atm. And you know what? It is awesome.

Actually its now half and half...sometimes it happens and sometimes its stays dark...unfortunately, that looks even more unrealistic than what it was before ^
 
My planet lights keep switiching between light an dark.. ita horrible!!

Known SLI bug, mine currently doesn't(I too have SLI) and I don't know why.

I hope the QOL update sees to this Dark Side nonsense, and Beige problem, and many SRV QOL bugs(hitting a small stone can stop you dead in your tracks, scanner volume, Turret view useless until we get scanner enabled in it etc.)
