I never though I'd say this, but I'm starting to like Engineers

When viewed through the lens of PvE I think the engineers are awesome. When viewed through the lens of PvP, I think they're pure cancer. Double RNG and secondaries are my main complaint, followed swiftly by the fact that if you want to get into PvP you aren't really ever going to be engaging in PvP, you're going to be off constantly grinding for mats. Even if Fdev just removed one of the layers of RNG and nixed the secondaries altogether, that would go a long way towards softening the blow.

I'd say the Engineers are cancer from both PvP and PvE point of view.

I will continue to ignore them, along with the game itself for now. Indefinitely. Having much more fun with another games crafting and survival system at the moment.

Luckily (for me) I'm not coming at it from a PvP perspective. Despite being in Open most of the time, I'm a happy PvE'er.

How exactly does it add anything to PvE? Sure, you are able to make a little bit more DPS, but you could also get that by buying military grade weapons (if they would exist...). Both the grind and the RNG are an annoyance, especially since they are combined...

Gathering materials and re-rolling modules for slight improvements is one of only a handful of end-game loops. I enjoy it for the most part. I wouldn't mind being able to improve my chances of a god-roll by using 4x the mats or something like that. At the level I'm doing engineering I typically show up with 100 rolls and expect to take home between 1 and 4 modules that are better than what I already have.

My combat skills are in the 'woeful' area, so any advantage I can eke out from increased shield strength, faster boosting or corrosive MCs is a bonus to me. Also longer range FSDs are always nice (although that's not PvAnything).

FSD jump ranges are unviable without engineering. Same for power plants if you want to fit a ship properly. Even with a good G5 Overcharged Power Plant roll I'm still exceeding the power cap on my Corvette.

I'd say you could also have this without the game mechanics being so annoying. Worst example Skyrim (which is still better than ED in crafting IMO), best case example Jagged Alliance 2.

I like them since they dropped then engineer commodities.
And I never realy found the whole process to be especially grindy. Pretty much all materials/data just come to me naturaly during normal play. I think in all the time i've set out maybe 5 times to get something very rare, and hardly spend more then a hour each.
Even the CIF scanning was kind of entertaining.
On the other hand I'm not interested in PVP (not even a tiny bit). I guess there could be a few problems here balance wise.

Interesting idea for the "god" roll... lol at the 100 rolls, I typically show up with 5 and settle for whatever I get because I can't stand it (the mat gathering)!

It adds everything to PvE...minus the weapons stuff of course.
Longer jump range, lighter components, cooler components, faster speed, etc, etc.
Not that I have done more then G2 (or is it 3?) upgrades to a couple of components to a couple of ships.

Guess you could do weapons and shields to smack the NPC's but ED has never been a combat game for me.
As a practical matter I have as much fun avoiding combat and completing my task. More so then pew pew.
But that's me. Combat is a dead end and dull profession in ED. For me.

All of this could be used for PvP.
And most importantly: All of this could be achieved with better modules.

Not so. I spent 9-ish months out in the black in a totally un-Engineered Asp (29Ly FSD).

Very much so. For the PvE'er Engineers is fun but quite optional.
For you PvP'ers it's god roll or die I suppose in Open. But Open is also optional.
Why you guys don't set up a non-Engineer PG for combat is beyond me.

Huh? You lost me.
Perhaps i misunderstood your post.

For me its not about the DPS. In my whole fleet of maybe 15 ships there are only two combat vessels (FDL and a conda). But all of them a engineered (well most of them).
It just adds another layer of customization to the game. The possibility to build ships tailored to specific roles that would be impossible just with stock components.
And IMHO, neighter the grind nor the RNG is that bad. I have at best 3 or 4 components that I have ever rerolled. Which is probably the reason why I hardly evere had to look for materials.

I like them a lot, ship capabilities are too predictable without them. Grinding for god rolls (is like grinding for mats is like grinding for credits) not really for me but I enjoy squeezing a bit extra into an already tight loadout (I like an engineered loadout, as opposed to an engineered module if that makes sense - drop some power on one module to allow a bit more power somewhere else etc.).

I find the habit of picking up a few mats up after a fight, literally only every now and then, occasional USS, obviously during missions they appear automatically or even just smelling the roses and doing some rally cross in SRV for half an hour, provides plenty of choice at the engineer. If you're max'ing that's different ofc but then again, you'r max'ing .. If you feel you're really missing on that Grade 5 mod though, take an Eagle into CZ and find out, it's really not what you've got but how you use it that counts.
