Monday Madness: Stealing ships

Welcome CMDR's,

After being woken up at 2:10am by two little runts attempting to steal my bike and getting scarred when the alarms went off which sent them running I figured what is to stop someone stealing our ships once space legs arrive? (I know it's a long stride to imagine such wonderful times ahead of us.)

What kind of in-game lore is there to prevent such a thing?
How could it be by-passed?
In what way would you imagine an in-game mission to steal an NPC ship to take place?
Should these kind of missions be considered by Frontier?

All of this is of course is pure speculation so go wild and have a blast while I transfer the CCTV footage of the runts to DVD for my local sector police to collect... In several days of course just like in the game! :D
(Sorry couldn't resist that last bit!)

The best thing to prevent theft would be to put you in charge of security. Sounds like you got things pretty secure.
I imagine a simple code to gain ship access would all that would be needed.

FD have done everything to stop 'gold' sellers, like no player economy and not allowed to gift items or credits.
Allowing ship stealing,in FD's eyes, will allow sellers to "sell" you credits by allowing ships to be stolen by those who purchase credits.
It will ever happen.

p.s. Besides, if they decide to allow it they will have to reset everyone's credits,as many are multi billionaires through exploiting.

Wont happen. People want this game to be too prim 'n proper to allow people to steal others ships. Quite frankly there would be an uproar.

If anyone wants ship stealing they'll have to wait for SC :).

I live in Birkenhead which is part of Liverpool - Stealing vehicles is a hobby for the runts round here hence the CCTV and chains for a scooter! :D

Me in charge of security... Not a good idea, just entering your own ship would entail a week of paper work followed by DNA checks on an hourly basis followed by urine samples to be sent to the mods for checking. Then and only then will you be allowed to enter the ship... Taking off would be a whole other ball game!

I think the bigger issue is that it would open the door to real-world money farming. You pay someone $20 and they buy (in game) a ship you can't actually afford in-game. An Anaconda, say. Then they meet you somewhere (planetary surface) and allow you to 'steal' the ship.

I've been quite lucky where I live the local scroats have left me well alone after finding out I was once in our football teams 'firm' it's a far bigger and rougher gang than the police and far more of a deterrent. Every now and again that misspent youth throws me a pearl.

as for E.D stealing an N.P.C ship would possibly be the only reason I'd use space legs it's an un wanted addition for me.

Even if stolen ships could not be sold (thus removing the credit transfer issue), allowing players to access, by theft, ships that might be rank locked and/or heavily engineered for a 5% cost to the original owner would give twinkers carte blanche to aid and abet mischief caused by new CMDRs (new in time sense, not necessarily in player sense).

Given that limpets can hack their way through the cargo bay while in flight, being stationary should make it all the more easy to hack your way on to the bridge. I don't give much credit to the security measures built into the ship, unless there were for instance a bio metric interface built into the Rem Lok suits we all wear and that's registered to the ship ???

Still back on topic.....stealing other peoples ships. I think this would require some deep game play requirements such as being allied with various nefarious entitys which could help you change the ship Ident / registry in order to fence it....these and other game play scenarios have been discussed previously. I'm not sure I want this in the game it would depend on how it's implemented.

Then again since David Braben seemed to be looking forward to the possibility of boarding ships to steal them, that doesn't sounds like such a bad thing.

If the theft was "real" in the sense that the original owner resisted to the best of their abilities then it'd be a real win for the thief.

Sadly, with the possibility of player collusion in the theft, it would be open to abuse.

But at that point that's no longer thief and just players trading ships.

Which is entirely fine by me, people are already RMTing in ED anyway.

DB is coming across as a bit of a griefer himself tbh :D, especially if he also thinks that it makes the galaxy more challenging. :)

Anyway, if there was a game mechanic where someone could steal my ship, I (and probably hundreds of other players) will never, ever, be tempted to go into open which, in itself, makes DB look out of touch regarding what makes ED a pleasant experience for some and not others. :)

Not really trading - as I'd expect that the ships would neither be able to be sold nor replaced after destruction - it'd be more like a "use it 'til you lose it" scenario.

Having zero day accounts with top-of-the-range Engineered meta-ships would be a "bad thing" for the game in general, in my opinion....

As to RMT, I'd expect that Frontier would remove any accounts identified as indulging in that practice.
