More ships are needed.

Hi CMDRs,

A while ago I responded to a thread with the notion we need more ships.
I got some interesting responses to that notion so I was curiouswhat people think in general hence this thread.
Now this is not a whine or complaining thread I just wonder what you think.

Now I fly the clipper as more or less my main ship becauseI don't want to fly the python like everyone.
This means you miss out on some of the pros of the python.

I Don't say we need an extra 20 ships (although that's fine too) but I do think we need more options and variety.

I think that what we need is:

- 3 Alliance ships by zorgon.
- 2 large ships that are not rank locked (don't corvette pilots get sick of flying the same ship as everyone else ?).
- 2 ships that can rival the python.

I feel the would bring more variation and balance to the game as now you really get pushed to the aspx, python.

What do you think.

I honestly don't think they're 'needed', and if I'm more honest still, I'd prefer development effort was focused in other areas as a priority, but I DO think we could benefit from a bit more variety. At the moment there are very few ships that are similar to one another, they are all pretty different, we could certainly have some extra models that deliberately are close to existing ships in terms of abilities and balance, just for variety, but a 'need' for more ships I currently don't see.

I'd also like to see more customisation, for example if you downsize a size 6 powerplant to a size 5, you gain an additional size 5 optional, or the oft suggested, splitting optional modules (e.g add a separator module to a size 5 slot, get two size 2 slots). If they made customization more meaningful in terms of configuration and loadout, we could get some pretty wild variation on our own. I'd also support simple remodelling. Make another ship identical to the DBX but with a different body, I'd be fine with that, at least people would have a choice which body they used.

Big ships are so boring to fly.

Which other ships have you tried in the game apart from the Clipper?
Are you aware that not all of the original ships are in the game yet?
Which ships do we all fly as you seem to think we are able to fly two at once!? "Now I fly the clipper as more or less my main ship becauseI don't want to fly the python like everyone." + "don't corvette pilots get sick of flying the same ship as everyone else ?" = Contradiction.
How are you pushed to just the two ships you mention?

What do I think? I think there are a lot of questions that need answers to justify considering new ships.

I have made some suggestions a while back for ships eapecially to fill the gap between the Python and Anaconda. Basically a large ship bot in the tier of the Anaconda or Python but in between. 6 utility slots, a C4 hardpoint and plenty of internal space. Average manouverbility (Viper style) and speed (around 360 with A thrusters and unmodded). Good jumprange for convinience and a 32T fuel tank.

More ships would be a good thing, but I wouldn't necessarily think about them the same way the OP seems to be.

Alliance-specific ships would be worth introducing. There are, in fact, enough wealthy high-tech and industrial systems in the Alliance that the council of Admirals could arguably commission specific designs for the Alliance Defense Forces. Even without that, those systems could commission their own designs and they'd be part of the resources detached to the ADF by those Alliance members. However, that's filling a "lore hole" more than contributing to actual gameplay.

I'd prefer to see FD thinking about better ships for specific roles. We currently have freighters, combat ships, passenger ships but we treat them all - with a few exceptions - as multirole because the current outfitting setup MAKES them all multirole. We've started seeing a nod towards specialization with dedicated slots for certain module types. I think FD could go further with this and introduce ships with restricted slot types and specific design characteristics that suit them for particular niches. How about the ship that's designed from the ground up to run cold and fast - for the smuggler or blockade runner, minimal weapons, medium cargo cap but hard to spot and harder to catch if you do. How about specialized miners that have a built-in refinery - more efficient and faster than the modular type but you can't remove it, and a couple of specialized hardpoints that only accommodate mining lasers - but mining lasers function as if they had a high-end efficient engineer mod when mounted there. I could go on for other professions but you get the point.

Yes you do :)

Adding entirely new ships are very demanding and time consuming on the Devs, I'd imagine. (Modeling, texturing, animations, balancing, etc etc)

I made a suggestion (two actually) about having variants of some ships, but using pretty much the same assets, bar a fancy unique paintjob for these new variants. They could also be locked behind some of the Pilots Federation Ranks.

You can then have many different kinds of the same ship flying around. Lol

A few quick ideas I had, are a Long Range variant FDL. Sacrificing power, and the huge hardpoint, for much improved range.
Or a Military Python, SLF capable, and a bit tougher, but with drastically reduced cargo capacity, and added mass.
A Racing Eagle. Loses its class 2 hardpoint, and a few other bits, but gets massively improved thrusters, with almost no drift. Excellent canyon runner or professional racer. :D
And a few others along those lines.

Well I have owned and flown every ship in elite dangerous except the corvette because I can't be bothered to rank further an also I am not particularly federationinclined either.

I fly the clipper because I like having something different and also it handles very nicely.
I currently own sidewinder, dolphin, cobra 3 , vulture , clipper and type 9 just different ships for different roles.

As for the being pushed towards python asp just read literally any thread on what ship should I buy .
These ships are very much op when in comparison to the rest.

Agreed, I think we should have more ships to create more diversity in the game. More SRVs would be cool, too.

I actually like what you propose also .
It would add to the game.

I'm not sure, if your solution would solve the OP's request for more uniqueness.
Sure, the variant you propose are interesting and I wouldn't mind seeing them in the game.

But the experience of flying a different ship is very much based on its contour (for others seeing it and for yourself while outfitting it / using the camera). And - of course - sitting in a unique cockpit that differs from the other ships. Especially the later is a huge drawback of the existing Viper/Cobra/Diamondback/Asp variants already.

Generally, I think the main question should be: What ships are missing in the game? Where are the niches that could be filled by new ships?
New ships for the sake of having more is somehow pointless.

You did, however, definitely name some possibilities!
Especially a medium long-range combat ship would be welcome (and I asked for it for quite some time now. I would like to base it on the Python, though. But that's just because I love this ship.)

However, engineers basically made those new ships obsolete. Very much can be tweaked already, almost all ships can have a sufficient jump range with a grade 5 modification.

Can some "computer expert" speak to this?
I am not a computer guy in any way but, certainly with FD's resources and expertise, I cannot imagine that adding ships can be that difficult.
