Credits/Schmedits - where can I get the most enjoyment per hour?

The activities that bring me the most amount of enjoyment are also very expensive. For many people, money is a barrier between them and fun.

clearing my save

I salute you (and Codger - you did this right?) but I'm afraid these three little words still fill me with utter dread (perhaps I'm not as totally indifferent to my accumulated assets as I'd like to pretend). :p

One day maybe ... one day.

Interesting, what are those activites? (most of mine you could do with "just" a few million - I'll admit to having around 200mill currently but I've had around 200mill for a LONG time now - my need for more money genuinely appears to have dried up*1).

*1 that said - I'm currently 98% of the way through Post Captain (and again, I've been 98% for quite a while, it's cool, I'll get there eventually, probably accidentally) at which point I won't have NEARLY enough money and you'll see me back in here asking "what's the new Quince?" ;)

I can recommend getting stranded, you only need a SRV and ship stupid enough to crash when you recall it and you will have a great time! Never had a better time then when I didn't have a ship :D

One of the true classsics! :p

Alternatively, you can always deliberately batter your ship down to 1% before dismissing it to somewhat force the ensuing adventure!

(Attention Stasis Wolf! Features planetary circumnavigation in an SRV, you might enjoy this!)

I have around 3/4 of a billion in rebuys:)

Meating friends and strangers alike, shooting your load into their bottom hole until they can't take it anymore, then send them on their merry way, after bluenosing them.

Teabagging (like during the last CG) is always great fun for me, boost-docking (and ducking) in a no-shields eagle to supply 16t of rare cargo to other ships, doing shenanigans during the restock time (flying through the superstructure outside and inside the station, playing chicken, ...) , help strangers gain a financial foothold in the game, possibly some innuendo, re-live the memory of Bast (with maybe a few additional details for the sake of the story, ...)

The Rescue of Bomba Luigi from Planet Wilson will always be one of my favorite memories of Elite, where we spent 2 weeks trying to get him out of that canyon and off the planet.

I also like flying (I'd not call it racing, since I don't take times and am not competing) through canyons in my Eagle, just to experience the sensation of flying there. To try how close I can cut corners, when to boost.

Driving the SRV is also a lot of fun for me, I don't need a goal, just something on the scanner or the horizon that raises my interest. See if I can climb that mountain, pass that canyon, scan that installation ...

Fighting in a RES ... well, I don't like that the pirates wait there to be slaughtered like the NPCs in your typical MMO, but flying between the asteroids/rocks feels great.

Lots of other things, but work is nearly over, so I drive home ;)

No, I didn't. I started a second account, so I could play from the beginning and record the process, in the hopes of making something helpful to newcomers (and to just experience it again, in a new way).

I now have two accounts with multi-billion credit balances, and all the ships unlocked on the first one (I only did the empire ranking on the second account, because I love the Cutter and wanted one on both accounts. One Corvette, on the other hand, is enough for me, I don't need another ;) ).

But I'm also a retired guy, with lots of time on my hands. Most people don't have that luxury.

Anyway, that's my story, so far. Will I ever clear a save? Probably not, but you never know! I just love my big expensive ships too much, I guess.

I was thinking about this, actually.

When I was growing up, at the point I got my first driver's license, my Dad was into really big cars. He always had some kind of battleship, usually a massive Cadillac of some kind (we even had one with big old fins on it -- looked somewhat like my Cutter now haha).

But back then I wanted the small, sporty cars. I didn't like my Dad's big boats.

So maybe it's a bit of my Dad peeking through in me now, that I love the big ships the most. I kinda like to think so, anyway.

I get so depressed reading endless "where can I earn the most credits per hour" threads or "where is the new Robigo" or "Is Quince dead?". OK, fair enough(ish), if you're a new player and you're genuinely asking for help re: getting from nowhere to your first Cobra then asking for some help is cool, but ultimately credits are worthless, enjoyment is everything (surely?). I mean, what are you going to spend the money on?
For some people, they happen to find entertainment in bigger, more awesome ships. To each their own. I, for one, love flying around in my Anaconda and wish to fly no other ship. If I were to, for some reason, start over right now, my primary goal would be getting back to my favorite ship as fast as possible. To do that, I would need to know where the current "big money" is.

So ... on this subject, what do you do (or have done) that you would say has brought you the most enjoyment per hour?

That's easy. In all the almost three years of Elite Dangerous I've played, the most fun I've had by a wide margin was while exploring on the Distant Worlds Expedition with over a thousand other commanders. The group meetups were incredible, and we explored so many awesomely beautiful planets out there. It wouldn't be anywhere near as fun today what with the beigeficiation, but I am so glad I did this trip before 2.2 was implemented. I hope Elite can offer that kind of fun again someday!

Yeah - very envious that I missed that one (at the time I didn't think I'd be able to keep up, nor to be able to take part in the evening meet-ups, but I deeply regret not going).

Try to get your SRV into odd places:

I just couldn't squeeze past into the centre.......

Don't try to squeeze, it nearly never works. Instead, drive up one of the surrounding pylons and then thruster-jump into the middle. Or hitch a ride on top of a ship. It's not that tough to get in there.

Get in with the Killer Whales and get invited to one of our Poker Runs - you won't know what to do with so much fun. We have been discussing hosting a Public Poker Run as well. It's a bit of a logistical pain to coordinate these on such a scale, as the small private ones we've done have proven, but once under way they're tremendous.

Our Alpha-Ring SRV races are also a crazy good time - we race around the inner ring of an Alien Ruins Alpha site - no guns, no thrusters, but feel free to nudge another racer into the hole. We've done 25, 50 and 100 lap races and only had to stop one on account of laughter so far.

just picture 25 SRV's doing this as fast as they can manage, all trying not to hit a pylon or fall into the hole and you get the idea.

For fun, I either grab a cheap ship and go and troll the trolls at CGs.
This brings much joy.

Failing that, I use said ship to canyon race, usually alone. But it would be nice if other CMDRs would join.

Failing that again, just mucking about in the SRV is good fun.

I once wrote up a list of in-game mini games to play with others. But never got the chance to do any of it. Mostly some typical Team Deathmatch stuff, or capture the special cargo item, or assault the mothership, which is basically team deathmatch, but someone has an Anaconda loaded with turrets you need to take down. Lol

Hey Alec,

Last night I bought my first Python. Less than 24 hours later I decided to sell it. It just seemed to suck all the fun out of the game. I've yet to find a ship that gives me as much enjoyment as the DBX, so while there are a couple other ships I'd like to try someday, credits have taken a back seat because I can rebuy my DBX 100 times over with my current bankroll.

So instead, I'm enjoying this one particular ship, learning to play (and role play) to her strengths. She's my Millennium Falcon, which makes me feel much more like a proper CMDR. For a game set in a rag-tag dangerous galaxy, I'm amazed how everyone ends up billionaires flying around in the biggest, most expensive ships imaginable, with entire fleets at their disposal. Han Solo, Malcolm Reynolds - these are captains we admire, in part because of their "underdog" ships.

ps - I do have a couple other modest ships for pure bounty hunting and trading, so even I have a "fleet" of sorts.

Yeah, the DWE was a pretty big deal. Fun to meet up with everyone at the waypoints. Feels like a long time ago now.

I'll tell you where you can find the least enjoyment per hour ... searching for pharmaceutical isolators, that's where. Sod this, I'm off to scope out the Prison Brake race.
